From what the fluff says, the three enormous, galaxy-ending fleets of doom that the Imperium has encountered thus far are mere scouts for the real invasion. But it has now been centuries since those fleets showed up. What is taking the rest of the fleet so long? Did they decide to stop and play cards outside the galaxy or something? Even in the huge intergalactic distances involved, the scout fleets couldn't have been sent that far ahead of the main force that it is centuries behind. What's the Hive Mind playing at?

Well they probaly consuming all the other Galaxies out there or are traveling through space towards the milky way.
They probaly sent out scout fleets to other Galaxies as well.
How far apart are different Galaxies it might take the Nids thousand of years to get here.

It's all about balanced games,as of now, with only "scout tendrils" invading the galaxy, this is achieved (to an extent),.
To put it in perspective,a game played now, using current "it's just the scouts" fluff can look like
IG VS Nidz 1500 points per side.
However, once the main Nidz fleets reach our galaxy a game will be
IG 1500 points VS Nidz 15000 points.
just to represent what the Imperium will really be facing.
That or they may have had to stop to ask directions.

Slowly accumulating in my work space.
I would think they would be expanding three dimensionally from another galaxy, which means most of them would be going away from the Imperium. Or were, anyway.

Definitely playing cards Beasts as awesome at the nids don't ask for directions.
Though I heard a rumor from a friend that the whole reason they are even out and about the galaxy is that they are running from something. He said it was in some eldar fluff. Of course we all this is crap as the tyranids neither run nor hide from anything!
I still keep thinking about a tyrant and a fex battling it out over who was card counting

Given how GRIMDARK something scary enough to make the Tyranids run for their lives would be, I'd say that your friend is probably right and we will be seeing this new abomination sometime in the future.
I keep imagining a gaunt with a visor on dealing blackjack to another group of guants.
