Okay, so 40k has Gods, Builders, Ancient races, etc...

But two things are on my mind;

If Gods are created warp entities; what is supposed to have started life? Is it correct to assume this hasn't been covered since we (supposedly) can't explain it in our own world?

Aaaand secondly,

Do any scholars within the Imperium ask the same thing? Is it heretical to discuss it? Surely it is beyond the domain of the Emperor as he himself was not born with creation? (Or perhaps the energies used to create him were... but I dunno).

40k noob to you, Dakka... DISCUSS!

Ahh this is a question that has been tapping into our minds ever since we existed.
I think the Old Ones created most of the races in the 40k universe.Necrons just evolved somehow.

The 'big bang' started the universe. The Old ones likely created most of the races in our galaxy.

And as far as any loyal Imperial citizen is concerned, the Emperor (glory be his name) caused the bing bang.

Ask further questions of this nature and you will swiftly suffer an 'accidental' bolt round to the head, courtesy of the Inquisition

The ancient race that was the Necrons (Necrotyth?) were not created by the Old Ones.

They already existed, its unknown how they were created but they were extremely bitter and hated the Old Ones for having suck long lives (Dont they were immortal) and they had such short ones.

the Necrontyr also despised the Old Ones because they lived on a radiation ridden planet and this made them sick and die quickly. Then they discovered the C'Tan and waged war on the Old Ones.

The mystery of the origin of existance, not just life, is just as big a question in the 40k universe as it is in our own.

Personally i think the old ones have a link to the warp. For instance, its speculated that the eldar gods are perhaps old ones since Isha was said to have seeded their race. Contradictory to this however is the fact that the eldar godsa are also said to be parts of their own psyche. Confuzzling indeed!

The Eldar gods are Greater demons not proper gods.

No the accident of plastic was an anelgy. What I was saying was that the eldar ACCIDENTALLY created slaanesh. I can't put clearer than that.

I always thought demons were the product of a god. For instance i always believed that the keeper of secrets was a breed of demon created by slaanesh to serve it. Its imbued with slaanesh ideals as seen in its elegant appearance. But if eldar gods are demons then wouldnt that mean they are merely the product/servants of another god? confuzzled

Well, presumably the universe in 40K started like our own - with some sort of Big Bang. Then, as time went on, the Old Ones evolved (they move quick). The Old Ones travelled through the stars, either creating races or helping the 'younger' races they found. Eventually, they found the Necrontyr, who immediately hated the old ones because the Old Ones were nearly immortal, and the Necrontyr had short lives because their planet was quite radioactive. Eventually the necrontyr found a C'tan feeding off of their star, and brokered a deal with it. This started the War in Heaven, where the Necrons (they were made necrons by the C'tan) did their damndest to eradicate the Old Ones (and all other life). Eventually they had 'done enough' and went into slumber.

Leaving behind the survivors of the races the Old Ones had created. These include the Eldar and the Orks.

Eldar flourished and did their thing, Orks infested the galaxy from one end to the other, as their wont to do, and the humans evolved in isolation on Terra.

Cue the Fall - Eldar get schooled by Slaanesh, their empire dwindles, the warp storms around terra diminish and humanity goes wild and takes over the galaxy. Then some more awful warp storms for millenia, everything kinda goes to gak for the humans, orks go wild and stomp lots of 'umies, Daemons eat lots of humans, etc.

Then BAM - the Emprah shows up, invents Spess Mahrienz, tames the warp and reunites the galaxy in a great crusade. All is good, until the Horus Heresy.

The imperium survives and plods along for about Ten Thousand Years under the protection of big E. Then everything goes to hell. That's right. Tau show up in the Galactic East, cause a bit of a stir - then no one cares because the Nids are going gangbusters and eating everything. All of a sudden, Necrons decide to wake up because all life needs to be extinguished right now.

That's where we are today.

(oh, and some time in there Abaddon launched thirteen fail-filled crusades, but no one cares)

Wasn't the fall of the Eldar the event that cued the start of the Great Crusade (give or take a century or two)? I thought the birth of Slaanesh clearing the warp storms and allowing human space travel happened in the early 30th Millennium or so?

No I think it was after the warp storms started to clear up that the crusade started. On another note:were the Warp Storms created by the Birth of Slaanesh?

No. The Fall of the Eldar created Slaanesh and I believe opened the Eye of Terror. That's right. You can blame the Eldar for everything bad that's happened since then. If they could've kept their naughty bits in their pants and their noses out of the coke, we wouldn't be having these problems. The Great Crusade happened after the Atomic purging that pretty much ruined Terra for good. The Emperor united Terra and then set out on the great Crusades, first brokering an alliance with the Mechanicus on Mars before moving on.

The Great Crusade started in M31. I believe the Warp Storms cleared up a few years prior to this.

The Dark Age of Technology (human expansion to the stars) took place during the milleniums of the teens and 20s. The warp storms that isolated Terra and caused all the trouble disappeared after the Emp (who had been on earth since the B.C. times I believe) had already forcibly united Earth. Slaanesh's birth allowed the Great Crusade to happen.

As for the creation of the 40k universe...well it's anyone's guess really. 40k is supposed to be based on our own far future, so whatever created us therefore created them. The warp entities that could be called demons and gods, of both greater and lesser power, didn't really come around until the War In Heaven between the Old Ones and the Necrons. The races made by the Old Ones, who were given great psychic ability with which to combat C'Tan, stirred up a crapstorm in the immaterium with all their fighting and dying and thus were all the gods born.

Actually, I beleive that the Fall of the eldar allowed 'Human Travel' to come to play. Thus began the Dark Age of Technology, and this was how humanity came to be spread all over the galaxy. (I think)

The Fall happened many years before the Emprah.

Precisely. The birth of Slaanesh and the opening of the Eye of Terror happened before the Emperor united Terra. The Warp Storms, however, resurfaced and covered Terra again, and didn't clear up until the Emperor conquered Terra.

Exactly. However, details of exactly why the Warp Storms resurfaced, and why they stopped, are non-existent. With the fall, the original storms were exhuasted through the creation of the Eye-of-Terror. So why did the storms rise up again?
