Well I'd suggest you should start with a DP (go for slaneesh as they're so charming, any other chaos marine will love to work for them!)

Then take some PLague marines, as pappa nurgles boys are a great unit, and from this you can make the rest of your army all nurgly.

If you then do some nurgly terminators, to act as 'counts as' oblitorators, (they're slow and purposefull so very in keeping with the plague marines) you'll probably have an ok army

Youll also have the least thoughtful, unfluffy cookie cutter list that you might as well throw into the pile with the other 10,000 people who play the exact same way.

How to start? Well, do you know the rules? Do you have a theme or goal with them?

I can tell you right off the bat, you dont want to buy:

Spawn
Possessed
Bikes

Buy the codex and a box of Chaos Space Marines. You cant go wrong with that. Under any case, you can always convert the CSM into berzerkers, plagues, etc.

Achualy the Battle force is gold. *Laughs at horrified faces*

Mix the Zerker and possessed bits up and now you have 13 awesome looking zerkers.

yeah, the battleforce is a really solid kit and good value, if you play for fun than keep the possessed, otherwise you may wanna mix and match to make more bezerkers as Lord-Loss said and potentially put wings on a Chaos Lord, I'd recommend getting a daemon prince at some point in the future though...

You will be hated for using a Lash/Oblit/PM list like this, its so common its laughable, I say use your own style as Night Lords said...

Good Luck!

CSM is a good choice.
Get a DP, three squads of PM's in Rhinos, and four Obliterators.
This gives you a nice army at the 1000 - 1250 pt level.

as the man said "FLUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUF!" thats barely fluffy no matter how you swing it...

So how are you planning to base this army around fluff? which legion/renegade chapter are you going for, as from the sounds of what you have it doesnt have much of a 'shared theme' if you get me...

bloodletters and flamers can be used as lesser daemons too, but from the sounds of things you may wanna use them as, say a small 500pts Daemon force?

Good Luck!

depends what you want to do...but i always find combat to be the best way to cause chaos!
Bezerkers, lots of bezerkers
and a khorne lord with deamon weapon
always good fun, even if the lord does masacre himself with his demon weapon! and if you play for fun its always a giggle

Just get what appeals to you. I don't like lash or a lot of other elements of the army, so I built a fluffy Iron Warriors army loaded with vindicators and rhino-bound Chaos Marines. I made a very up close and personal army, without being flat-out assault, since that's how I like to play.

Ok for my theme, or also known as (deep breth) FLUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUF

This will be one of my few choices.

1st one: 2, 750 armies, 1 khorne and 1 tzintch, each trying to outdo each other. this would work well because i could have a tough fire base and a really powerful assault force. bad side: few models a horde could hit me hard... BAM!

2nd one: Demon heavy army: A demon prince with an icon and a few squads of chaos marines, then lots and lots of demons of every type. Good side: Will catch my opponent off guard. Bad side: demons may not show up and i could be wiped out with PIE!

3rd one: Recently turned traitor army: Lots of codex squads, a bit like a tale of 4 gamers army. Ups: Flexible. Downs: No tricks

4th one: Abadon!: Abadon and his personal staff. aka termis and chaos lords. Ups: Really hard hitting and can turn the tide af battle quickly. Downs: A lucky PIE can kill about half my army, And not many points for troops.

Well... What do you think?

Which is best?

Which is fluffyer?

Which is FLUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUFY!?!?!?

Also all other themes would be welcome.

Oh and i dont really know much about chaos or its names so... SDRUW SPELLING!

Also, I use Possessed. They are the core of my army and I do fine.

I also use Bikes at 1750. They always make their points back.

Like said before three looks best and possessed are not as bad as they are made out to be. Yes random but if you lack in assaulting they can cover that hole. Bikes i have no idea about never used them. Spawn are only used in GoC fun games. Chaos in general is a very fun army to play.

Then it comes to be that the soothing light at the end of your tunnel, its just a freight train coming your way!

Go with a ONE god and start a themed army.

You can have a quite well-themed army with as many gods as you want.

Get off your high-horse.

The fact of the matter is that the current book is written specifically so that almost any combination of forces you can think of is "fluffy" including the infamous "lash, oblits, plague marines."

If a lash prince can tell enemies that have deep, undying hatreds of them and everything they stand for how to move, then they shouldn't have too much problem convincing a warband made of disparate forces to team up with them, as another poster mentioned.

Why did the berzerker cross the road?

Willydstyle: Come on, this is as fluffy as space marine captains riding on top of their rhinos while shooting multi-lasers!!

If you like fluff,
stick to undivided or a single god,
that would stand out as fluffy.

Lash prince is fine, just make sure that you have slaanesh marines, etc.

I'm sorry, but I've been playing chaos since early 2nd edition. For almost all of the time that chaos has been available as an army, mixed god lists were the norm, not the exception.

You're telling a person how to play his army because of your prejudice based on one codex and one version of the "fluff."

Personally I'd say work out a theme that will keep you interested and then see which units/god fit it best. That way it will hold you're interest and hopefully as it's themed even though it may not be the best mathhammer army the unusual combos may catch your opponents a bit wary and balance it out a bit. A great conversions also great for attracting fire away from actually decent units. My Leman russ atracts plenty of fire, while my demolisher usually makes up it's own points as well as the russes and keeps the game interesting.
