Like you gentlemen I'm a strong die-hard GW loyalist and I would never play Warmachine.

However, Priavteer Press been gaining steam for the past 3-5 years now and several local clubs have completely switched to playing just warmachine. This disturbs me and considering the vast amount of posts here on Dakka Dakka that War40k is going down the drain as well as the record losses GW had in 2008 and 2009 worries me greatly.

First I thought war machine was just another trendy excuse for a serious hobby like Mage Knight that would die in 1-2 years. Now it seems they have a real following and might be here to stay permanently.

So my questions are:

1.) How grave is the threat of warmachine in stealing Games Workshop's god-given market-share. Is 40k and WHFB really "going down the drain."

2.) How do you "take out" Privateer Press? Maybe GW can practice tough-competition stances such as refusing to sell 40k items if those independent stores stock warmachine or offer a discount if retailers will dump their warmachine stock and refuse to carry any privateer press products?

3.) What can GW and we do to ensure the long-term collapse and failure of warmachine?

I think people just like to gripe. As far as I can tell, 40k is getting better and better. Quite frankly, I'm not interested in seeing Warmachine collapse. I hope it does well, as a matter of fact, because having more popular and established games is better for miniature gaming as a whole.

"because having more popular and established games is better for miniature gaming as a whole."

That's treasonous talk. GW needs all the market share it can get and that means every man, woman, and child ever buying a fantasy or sci-fi miniature must buy it from GW.

War-machine's success means GW is that ever closer from maximizing its profit margins. What is good for GW is good for us.

I really don't think so. Warmachine is on a completely different style and scale, and from what I understand only one race has any real chance at winning games. I think they have a long way to go before they actually become much in terms of competition. Even then, the two systems play out so drastically different that they really can't be compared much. WM is, from what I understand, a very small skirmish game played with only a few units. 40K on the otherhand has far more empahsis on large armies, and expansion games like Apoc that can take days to finish.

In short: Can I see WM becoming the dominant small skirmish game as GW moves further and further into large-scale games? Yes. But I can't see it coming anywhere close to shutting them down. 40K just has so much more fluff and background, it's got a greater ground thanks to it's age, it's more widely known thanks to it's videogame and (now) movie titles, and it's just generally more well-established. I can't see that changing for worse unless GW as a company financially collapses.

As far as running Warmachine off the chart, that would only leave GW to jack their prices higher because they'd be the sole major Sci-Fi/Fantasy Games producer. If anything, Warmachine's existance is beneficial to us as GW buyers because it forces GW to create more new product to draw in fans, lower prices to stay competative, open more stores, and offer even better customer service (If it's possible to improve on getting a whole new box/blister because of 1 missing part).

I say that for our benefit and for the actual growth and improvement of GW to stay competative, let Warmachine grow a bit

Games like WM definitely have an impact on GW's sales however IIRC GW made around 100 million dollars (before expenses) whereas PP makes less than 5 million (around 3?). Privateer Press has a long way to go and its going to be tough to make their IP's as well known and regarded as GW's who has at least two more video games in the near future and a 'movie' coming up.

If GW wanted to really hit WM in the nads they could reduce their prices or re-release games like Necromunda and Mordheim.

GW FTW! I was looking at the stock prices for GW recently, and was alarmed to see the major fall since 04. It's picking back up again, and they've paid off all their debt. But do you guys know if GWs losses were really that bad? Or are they just not regular dividend payers? Anywayz, if WM picks up we gotta torch their hq. Oh, and if he was Jervis he wouldn't of told us if they made a loss

Competition is good for the consumer. I hope Warmachine does well because then GW will strive to do better. Let's face it, 40k shouldnt take 5 years for an update to come out for an army. They should be making official FAQs and changes to balance the game.

I cant really complain about the models, other than the metals that are still getting phased out. I just think GW could do better with the rules.

I don't want the Consumer to win, I want only GW to win.

Oh wait... lolz

Actually waiting 10+ years for a Dark Eldar update really does pisses me off when it comes to think of it.

Also... how GW only supports Space Marines, Space Marines, AND MORE SPACE MARINES!@!@! THIS HOBBY IS ABOUT SPACE MARINES! Everyone ELSE ONLY EXISTS TO GET STOMPED BY SPACE MARINES!@!@! so they are 2nd priority.

If GW wins, then there is only one loser - the gaming community as a whole.

Competition is good for business. Keep up or fall by the wayside.

Maybe if the Dark Eldar weren't so terrible than GW might have done some more work on them. If they come back as anything resembling what they were, I'd rather they were just gone. DE need a fluff n'model overhaul before as bad as they need a new codex...then I might be interested.

GW is entry point for almost every minis gamer. While a lot of gamers move on from GW games, it’s impossible for any company to take GW’s dominant position without being the entry point for new gamers. That would mean Privateer Press or whoever building up a network of their own stores… something that isn’t going to happen for a long time.

The bigger issue to me is the assumption that you are a Warmachine gamer or a 40k gamer or whatever else. Why shouldn’t we be playing two, three or ten different games, if we liked different parts of each?

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Because that hurt's GW market share and reduces ther dividends thus driving down their share price. GW should engage in predatory competition to destroy its enemies in a small niche market. Only then can we all rest and sleep easy.

If you're truly a supporter of Warhammer and 40k you should be a shareholder in GW.

Here in Perth, GW and to some extent Dungeons and Dragons are just about the only minis games that us Sandgropers (only people from down under will know what that means) play. Infact, who the hell are privateer press?

I think not. Aside from some disappointing things (latest chaos codex) 5th edition 40k is going pretty well.

I don't think Warmachine has a big following in the UK.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

EDIT. I am closing this thread. The original posts and follow on posts by the OP are designed to get a negative response, and I'm happily surprised no one has bitten yet.
