I am all about new blood; in fact, I was 11 when I got the GW Battle Masters box game and was completely intrigued with the accompanying brochure on Warhammer and 40K. If I had had a miniature store nearby, I would have probably got into 40k alot sooner than 16.

I am also looking forward to when I am a father and can introduce my son into the game. My only reservation would be some of the fluff for Chaos, which I think is meant for an older audience.

As almost everyone knows, little kids are pests and very annoying. I know I was. I haven't actually played at a store in a couple years, and am quite out of the loop, but when I had a quick resurgence into the game, I could definitely say, I didn't really enjoy the company of younger gamers.
You look over at their army which they must have spent all of the past 2 nights painting, splotches of paint everywhere, flock clinging to the inside of models legs... and those are the finished models. Then look at your 20 miniatures you've slaved over for the past 2 months. At this point you realize you wasted 30 minutes driving down to the comic store to play this 12 year old and your only rolling 1's and 2's. Not cool.

I enjoy the lighter edge of the game. Have a couple friends over, drink beers, and play some war games on a rainy weekday night. I know when I started playing the game, I was definitely one of "those kids" but, I quickly learned spray paint burned models don't look good, and neither does a half assembled army.

I voted could be better, even though I sounded like a jaded old fart. But the fact that I was young and annoying when I started playing (I think I was... 12 or 13?) decided my vote.

I would like to see GW set up league style approved play that separates the kids from the adults/young adult.

I dont mind kids or new players. Largely it depends on the person, but most are willing to learn. I give two gaks about how well they can paint, and anyone who criticizes a noobie for their lack of painting skills is a jackass.

People at that age inject energy into the hobby.

I myself started when I was younger (10ish), and do not see that much wrong with new players. On certain occasions, of course, there is your young opponent who doesn't know gak about the rules, or continues to insist that they are right, even in the face of the rules. However, most of the time, at least in my experience, they are ready and willing to learn.

As to how well they paint, yes, sometimes I have seen models that make me cringe, but then I remember what my first models looked like.

QFT

Kids are kids, so will be immature (in comparison to Elders - acting 13 is NOT immature for a 13yr old! - people tend to forget this!), impatient, more interested in shouting "pew pew pew" .... "Waaagh!" ... "DakkaDakka" than in well-thought out tactical plays. They like house-rules for their favourite model, and getting bored/angry if they lose.
(Hold on, that sounds like me! And I've not been 13yrs for (*cough*) years!)

That's kids for ya!

Its always good to see new blood, whether they like modelling, painting, fighting or whatever. Maybe some of them will make the Leap-of-Faith to TableTop RPG!
A room full of "old men" arguing over toy soldiers is a bit sad.
A room full of mixed ages/genders/races/hairstyles is a good, diverse hobby with a lot going for it
(Is it anyone else's experience that RPG/wargame devotees are bespectacled computer students into Heavy Metal?)

I call in at my local GW regularly, and the standard of some of the painting there over the summer was ... to put it politely ... looks like at was done by a 8yr old!
Oh, yeah, it WAS done by an 8yr old! So I say "Nice going, mate! Better than my early models!" and move along.

Just my 2 teef.

Agreed. My first models were painted with testors enamels, no priming or anything. Theres a kid at my LGS who loves to paint and convert, he isnt that great at it, but he loves doing it. And more power too him.

I'm Thirteen. I'm annoying.

But, thats more due to my Pyromanical tendencies (What can I say, I like playing with fire!) instead of my gamingrecord , and I don't see why older, 'Maturer' gamers continuesly have to badmouth youngsters in the hobby. I am sick of how "Young person" seems to have become a degradory term in the past few years, and the local store is NOT heping that situation .

/Nonsensical rant.

yes they can be annoying but I took one under my wing once and he developed into a great gamer and stopped the annoyingness. Now at 15 he wins all the tournies in southern OR. He's also becomming an amazing painter and in a few years wil deffinately be a deamonholder if he keeps up. People just need to remember have paintence cause im sure to someone else your kids are annoying too,

P.S I have seen many gamers in their 30's and 40's throw bigger tempertantrums then kids just saying.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House!

I'm fourteen. I will say one thing on this subject. Don't generalise. Admittedly some (if not most) of kids my age can be annoying to play against. One for example, complained that BoC were broken when he lost aganst them with his daemons(!) to extreme tactical incompetance. I personally try not to complain when the dice go against me, not to quit mid game and to try and have a laugh.

Meh, I too am a young 'un.

We can be annoying, hell, we can be VERY annoying, but not all of us are.

Besides, we'll all grow up someday and hate those young 'uns we once were...

Hard to answer, but yes, sometimes I'd like to order a Exterminatus on them!
Of course we all (almost) was once like that, (well not me really, I have never played a game in my six years of painting and not done anything at GW except buying stuff) But when we often forget that we also were like that once.

I don't mind the younger players as they are important to the hobby and we can not expect them to act the way we want unless we teach them.

Here is what I don't like, I'm an older gamer (in my 50's) and don't like to play the younger gamers unless I know them for two reasons: 1) If their parents are there, they look at me like some kind of old creep in a candy store playing with the kiddies, and 2) If you win, people look at you like you are picking on the kids. Either way you lose.

Just my thoughts...

I think it is great if kids want to play the game. In my opinion it is better then video games or heroin. I doubt some kid playing Warhammer is going to be out "banging" on the street, throwing up some BS gang sign. Kids learn to think criticly when playing and putting together a competetive army list, and they can express themselves creatively with thier painting and converting.

With that being said, I don't play against kids. The older I get the less I can relate to younger people outisde of my daughter, nieces, and nephews; whom I intend to teach all of them the game. My daughter already wants to have my Ogre kingdoms army.

I'm 12 as of a couple days okay so I'm a little biased but I get that when your older you would rather played adults and I do realize you have to work harder to be accepted but I like that it makes the hobby not just playing with little men. (or orks in my case)

I've been playing for almost 15 years and I started when I was about 10. My first fantasy army I painted with a toothpick because I couldn't afford paintbrushes. I was one of the few younger players that the older crowd enjoyed playing because I could take a loss as well as I could take a win and was interested in learning and understanding the rules and my army. I'm not saying I was perfect and there were plenty of times were something shiny distracted me.

We've had a large influx of younger players at my FLGS and as with any group of people there are some I enjoy, some I tolerate and some that I do my best to avoid. I do try to be patient though because the older crowd that helped me learn the game did the same and there's nothing worse than someone yelling at you over a game that you're trying to learn. It makes you not want to continue playing and new players always helps the hobby and my FLGS grow.

I turn 22 in a few weeks and have only recently gotten into wargaming. Only played at a FLGS once, and had to deal with that effing kid and his flustered mother whose half-assed admonishments did less to save my models than my quick reflexes. That wasn't even an opponent.

I've been lucky enough to find a handful of players around my own age on campus (some as new as I, others more experienced), so I haven't had any play time with the kiddies (barely had any with my peers...).

As a rule, I don't like dealing with kids. In fact, I hate it. I voted "not bad" because A) young blood and energy is good for any hobby, B) I wasn't like that at any point, so the next more severe option didn't fit, and C) I'm sure that there are younger players I could sit down with and not want to kill. Hell, a few of them could definitely teach me a thing or two AND avoid making me want to kill them. I just don't expect to find one anytime soon.

To those younger kids posting here that say "don't generalize," don't think that everyone who prescribes to a particular assumption does so dogmatically. I don't like kids and I LOATHE brats (of any age), but if one of you proves yourself to be tolerable, I'll tolerate you. If you do better, I'll even like you. Hell, the more surprised I am by my comfort in your presence, the cooler you'll seem, whether totally deserved or not

I voted other. I tend to avoid playing against youngsters. Yes, they can be annoying (sorry all you young 'uns - you'll understand when you're older) but that's not their fault, and not the reason I try not to play them. It's just that, being in my late twenties, with a kid of my own, I prefer to socialise with people my own age. Spending my free time with children would just feel weird.
I do think the hobby has suffered from catering to them - greatly. But, again, that's not their fault.
