As a proud owner of 27 Deathwing terminators I like to know as much about their backstory as possible. I've noted the red broken sword with wings emblem for the Deathwing and that the Deathwing company banner has a fallen human with wings with a broken sword beside him.

However, no where in the Lexicanium website, rule book, or Dark Angel codex does it mention what the significance/fluff/back story of the broken sword is. Does anyone in dakkadakka land know the legend of the broken sword for the Deathwing?

I assume, although I do not know, that it has something to do with the Fall (almost everything DA does...). The sword could be the sword of the Lion that Cypher is said to carry and that the Dark Angels are forever searching for. Or it could mean the shattered honor that they lost in the event of the Fall.

If you want more info, I suggest reading the pair of HH books on the DA. I've only read the first, but it provided a lot of light into their origins. If your answer is anywhere, its most likely there.

When Gabriel reformed the Deathwing after it was wiped out down to Ezekiel it was his personal symbol. Its also where the white armor came from. The Deathwing expecting to die had painted their armor white in tradition with their culture accepting death. Gabriel adopted it out of respect to those terminators.

the Deathwing were originally Green, like the rest of the DA (Or black if you disagree on the green, being that it was an error). The Bone colour signifies the tale in which a squad of Dark Angels Terminators sacrificed themselves to free a recruiting world from a Genestealer infestation. Knowing they wouldn't survive, they painted their armour bone white in preparation for death (akin to how Kings and Royalty used to be dressed in their most regal clothing for their funeral).

The broken sword either signifies the schism that tore the Dark Angels Legion in half, or it signifies the lost squad, and how they stood and fought against all odds, even though they were all lost.

Thanks to all but I think ChristmasMarine is right. Here's what the Lexicanum says about Cypher:

"Rumour has it that Cypher seeks to reforge the now broken Lion Sword and present it to the Emperor of Mankind, obtaining absolution and forgiveness."

It seems quite likely that the broken sword of Lion'el Johnson, the Dark Angels' Primarch, is the broken sword in the Deathwing emblem.

That is what I thought as well tbh.

Erectile disfunction.

Oh sure they SAY it's because when they liberated their recruiting world (the native American style one) in Bill king's story Deathwing they broke their vow to the emperor, (they should have nuked it from orbit rather than try to save the civilians), they say it's the same reason they had to paint the armor white but we all know the real reason.

Erectile disfunction.
