Hey!

I am having a good time prepping my Marines for buildup, Orks will come next. (I just picked up the Assault on Blackreach box)

As I am removing flash and odd bits of sprue, I am wondering about the unit these guys are from.. what motivates them.. what they might yell on the way into oblivion..

Is it common for gamers to come up with their own chapter history and markings? I didn't see anything about this in my first run through the rulebook, so I figured I would ask here before committing to one of the established paint scheme.

Thanks!

Lots of people invent their own chapters. Unfortunately the rules for Space Marines changed last year and there really isn't much in the way of reflecting your own chapter in rules anymore. The new scheme is taking special characters from what could be called Chapters of Reknown and using them to give an army a certain theme.

Go get a copy of the Space Marine Codex. You'll need that anyway, but there's a small section in there about making your own chapter.

Iv said it before and Ill say it again. Your army is your army. Do what you want with it and make it an expression of yourself.

You want to go generic space marine chapter? Or go for one of the codex chapters, like space wolves, dark angles, blood angels, or black templar? If you go generic you can come up with your own army, background, and scheme based on your play style.

Mine, as an example, are a Dark Angels sub chapter, who are in the service of a line of Inquisitors that discovered their dark secret, so I usually have Inquisitor allies, and alot of my units have served in the deathwatch.

Orks are even more fun to where you can make up your own Clan. Be it a speedfreek type clan based on alot of bikes and trukks, or, again on personal taste, a Mek army that employ alot of captured tech.

Read some fluff and get creative.

Should you need any more ideas or inspiration, try both the fluff section of Dakka, or sites like Wikipedia or http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Main_Page

I'm doing My own SM too, currently Generic UM but think of steering into BA codex.

But I am doing my own data sheets for characters like captain. I play with mates, and we all have a mutual understanding on what we can change to suit us, we dont try and make kill all units, because we actually enjoy a nice tight game. So Get an idea and run with it, most player are happy to accommodate as long as its reasonable.

* that post ended up much longer than intended*

** and then I made it longer.. ooh and again**

I'm both orderly and rational. I value control, information, and order. I love structure and hierarchy, and will actively use whatever power or knowledge I have to maintain it. At best, I am lawful and insightful; at worst, I am bureaucratic and tyrannical.
