I am deciding on which gang should be my first for Necromunda, and my Criteria are that the gang should have lovely looking models but also teach me the rules of the game.
From the first I have narrowed the field to the Redemption and the Ratskin Renegades. So now I need advice on which of these two is better for a Necromunda newcomer and the best way of using each.
I've already been told much about the Redemptionists recently, thank you Barlio, so I'm going to focus on the tribesmen in this post.
From poring over the rules for the last hour it seems to me as if it is a predominantly close to mid range gang with specialised roles. Mid ranged fire for 'skins, Combat for Totem warriors and close support for the braves. Is this a good setup?

Chief
Shotgun
Manstopper Shells
Sword
hotshot and bolt shells

Totem Warrior
Spirit Staff

Totem Warrior
Spirit Staff

Totem Warrior
Spirit Staff

3 Ratskins
1 lasgun
2 Autoguns
2 Handbows

3 Braves
3 Handbows
3 Muskets

I know the whole foraging thing is apparently bad for new people but with a gang of twelve and t he limit on territory I'm sure everyone will get fed.
I chose the three Totem wariors because I love the idea of a hard hitting ninja-types, and the rest are tooled up for short range fire fights. I didn't buy any new CC weapons because they all get clubs and clubs aren't too bad, it seems. The chief can toggle between gunfighting and head smacking depending on the situation.

I haven't got a full redemption list yet, but it'll definitely be a crusade heavy on exterminators.

So please, give me the benefit of your experience and wisdom and point me down the right path for me.
Thank you.

I would suggest you start with one of the house gangs, problem with the outlander gangs is that they are less forgiving if you do happen to make a mistake. With house gangs however a mistake or bad battle won't end up wth you starving.

All that said I'd suggest you go for redemptionists, not only are the models badass you also start with weapons all gangs can't get, hand flamers (or close to anyway). These allow your, at the start, quite poor bs guys to rack up some easy xp. If you do go with ratskins always, ALWAYS ensure you use the the treasuous conditions table, as long as you agree to use it whoever your playing has to agree, and since ratskins are immune to any of its effects, it can allow you the upper hand, ensuring you get a fairly nast roll however.

Yes, I imagine exterminators are handy in a shootout. I like the Idea of sing the conditions, some wold be really good to not be affected by. Moving on the top floor when my opponent can't due to wind would be pretty tricksy.
Iirc the redemptionists don't worry about starving, but they don't get much income.

Your correct, the income made is asumed to keep them fed. If you do do redemptionists however I suggest you make it a crusade, more reliable warriors as well as an increase in income.
