After seven years of unpainted Dawi sitting on the shelf and hiding in shoeboxes, I finally got 500 points of the Throng of Karak Dirj painted and took the field in a warbands game against a friend’s Vampire Counts army. I was very please with how my dwarves fared. Granted I was playing a vamp army without any vamps, but still I won both games.

I brought:
Thane – MRo Kragg the Grim, Ro Fury, MRo Gromril
19 Clansmen – Shileds, FC
6 Thunderers
Bolt Thower – Engineer, Valiant Rune

Vamps: (from memory)
Wight Lord – Killing blow sword
Necromancer
9 Wights
20 Zombies
15 Skeletons

Both games pretty much went the same way. I faced off against him and in the first couple of turns positioned my warriors to best charge, or take a charge, while I shot his screening units of skellies.

He rolled irresistible force several times to bolster up a unit of zombies on my flank, Ihad to turn and face them since I wanted my thane in combat for the combat resolution to pop zombies.

His unit bogged me down in combat and I was beset by his undead horde. My thunderers failed their fear test and refused to enter the combat. They will be soon taking the slayer oath for that!

Despite the odds, I was able to hold my own in combat, even when his wights got into the fight. I challenged with my thane, figuring I had a good chance to kill either the unit champ or the wight lord with the Master Rune of Kragg allowing me to strike first. In the first round of combat I was able to kill the champ, and I of coursed challenged again. He accepted with the Wight king and I gasped when I failed to kill him. His return swing attack hit me twice, and I just knew my thane was dead; I was kicking myself for not taking Rune of Preservation, but he failed to wound by rolling snake eyes. I killed him the next round and popped a bunch of zombies through CR. My opponent conceded the game.

I had a blast and my local gaming club is starting a 4 month WHFB escalation league, starting at 500 points and eventually ending at 2K. I will definitely be bringing my budding throng of Karak Dirj. I will keep you lads updated.

What is a youth? Impetuous fire.
What is a maid? Ice and desire.

Nice. Wait, Clansmen and only 6 Thunderers? How does this work? A different edition army book and rule set? Enlighten me.

GW published a warbands in White Dwarf 296-298 in 2004 and republished an actual Wrabands in 2006. I think they are good rules, but you may have to modify because of new books published.

Please do post your future games. I like reading the development of escalation leagues. One thing I have noticed though is that you have great magic protection at lower levels, which tends to thin out as you get higher. 4 dispel dice at 500 points is outstanding. Not so much at 2000 or 2250. So bear that in mind...

P.S. Couldn't seem to pick up your pics. Not sure what the issue is, or if others can see them.

“It was in lands of the Chi-An where she finally ran him to ground. There she kissed him deeply as he lay dying, and so stole from him his last, agonized breath.

On a delicate chain at her throat, she keeps it with her to this day.”
