lascannon against threadies and autocannon against everything else...about a 70/30 autocannon/lascannon distribution is win!

i guess because its a cheesy allrounder...not as good as the lascannon against tanks and not as good as an autocannon against infantry but 2-in-1...thats why a lot of pople think it's a good option...but it isn't at 15 points its only like 5 points cheaper than a lascannon and 5 points more expensive than an autocannon...so just do what i said ...70/30 makes the deal, believe me

I have started to use missile launchers since they can throw templates 48 inches to handle the footslogging orks and Ap 3 for meqs.

But yes, ML are the suk when compared to Autocannons and lascannons. Missile launchers aren't very competitive.

On line squads - Autocannons, and a few HB (HB is better for anti infantry vs IG, Orks, Eldar, Tau etc. AC can hurt transports and MC, and is about the same vs T4 3+)
On Vets - If you have heavys, run the AC. The exception is for a HB on a Harker squad (Harker, 3 GL, HB)
On HWS - Lascannons or Mortars.

I am also a fan of a PCS with a single LC (bunker down with GL/AC objective guards, and throw down FRFSRF.

How ab out Mortars?
I ended up with a bunch of them [and snipers] and was thinking of platoons with Sniper Rifle/Mortar combo.

I actually took mortars a couple times, because my friend gave me three. And I have to say I was pleasantly surprised with them. I bombed my friends d-cannons into oblivion, 48" sucker. I blasted hormagaunts grouped up and hiding behind a building...and ya thats all I can remember. They seem to be situation specific for usefulness. Most Space marines don't really care about a trio of S4 AP6 blasts, but they do about a trio of lascannons or autocannons if they have rhinos

Lascannons are so 4th edition. They're super expensive compared to everything else, and they still only fire one shot. With the average guardsman's BS, the chances of a hit aren't so hot. Guard prevail through weight of fire and putting the most possible firepower down range. Autocannons are the best for this since they have high strength, long range, and a decent rate of fire and AP.

However, sometimes it's nice to have one lascannon in a veteran squad somewhere in your army. The higher BS means they can actually hit something 66% of the time.

I personally go 0/100 on autocannon/lascannons. My infantry can take down troops as well as my Russ's. Lascannons are the way to go all the time IMO.

With the prevalence of cover in 5th ed, not to mention the prohibitive price point, lascannons aren't so hot. Also, you feel like you wasted a lascannon shot if you shoot a trukk with one. While autocannons can't penetrate AV13 like a lascannon can, they're cheaper and you can get a load of em. Besides, AV14 is for melta guns to worry about.

I love lascannons. In a combined squad of 30 Guardsmen, I have 3. It's essentially a more survivable version of a Vendetta gunship if you use BiD, plus if you stretch the squad out like:

x = lascannon
- = guardsmen

x-------------x--------------------x

One of the lascannons is guaranteed a side shot, which, assuming it hits (75% chance) has a very good chance to penetrate.

Im with Luna, they may not be the best, but i like the thought of dropping bombs on the enimies heads. Relitively cheep, template, and fun when they work. i also like the h-bolter for the rate of fire. again not the best but cheep and ok at what they do.
Competitive players will take the las/auto/launcher, but i like to have a bit of everything. Still my fav is the mortor for no other reason than i like the idea of em.

I agree - my LRBTs tend to excusivly target infantry.

It really all depends on the situation. In my opinion, the Auto Cannon is the way to go. It is in infantry killer, and you can pop transports, or light tanks. The mortar can be quite a killer though. Have an entire team of mortars firing on a position, with pinning. It can devastate a squad quite fast. Though its not that powerful, it is cheap, and will make the enemy roll wounds.

I view mortar same way as i view Ork shootas.
Cheap + Tons of them + the extra bonus of hiding out of los and still shoot!

Lascannons are great beacuse everything can kill basic troops, perhaps not well but they still can, but few things can scratch armour 14. They are a nessessaty IMO. On the other hand you get twice the shots out of autocannons at less points. I only wish ork artillery was as effective as IG.
