I am having difficulty choosing an army to play in 40k and would appreciate any help that is available.

I used to play 40k about 10 years ago as Dark Eldar and I want to get back into 40k again after a long hiatus. I was planning on starting a Tyranid army, but I now I am having second thoughts about that decision. I really like the idea of advanced technology such as advanced weapons and tanks as well as having a smaller amount of superior units compared to a larger amount of weaker units. I have also always been very anti-human armies and really only played Eldar and Dark Eldar.

My problem is I like close-combat oriented armies with some sort of long range anti-tank support and it seems that the only real options for that are some of the space marines variants. The eldar only really have the scorpions and banshees for close combat and the tau are not very good at close combat. Am I just really looking to start some kind of space marine army?

I would be grateful for any advice or thoughts on what type of army might really fit what I am looking for. It seems like the type of army I am looking for is space wolves or blood angels, but hopefully I am missing some other xeno army.

Thanks

You could pick up with the Dark Eldar again. They're exactly how you will remember them. Wyches in Raiders with lots of Dark Lances. Orks have lots of wacky innacurate weapons. Or you could wait to see what the Tyranid codex has to offer. They are reported to be getting much stronger anit tank capabilities.

of course this is mainly because they still use the same codex from 10 years ago with a small amount of extra options added.

And from the way you phrased your question it seems you REALLY Just want to play Eldar. The eldar do have good close combat options with the addition of harlequins in the main codex now. As well as shining spears and warlocks on jetbikes. And they still have good long range support with war walkers/falcons/fire prisms. As well as a few units that do both, Wraith lords.

But everything you describe wanting in your original post is the current play style of eldar.

Nids are getting a new codex soon. Did you see the pics of the new models?

Pick what you think looks the coolest.
Your going to spend countless dollars and hours on your army. It's important that you really like the way they look so you will be happy with your investment.

If you can find a good balance for it, it is possible to use the tau in the way you described. have some hammerhead tanks, or Broadside Battle Suits, then load up on as many kroots as you can as they work fairly well at close range. then for a little balance throw in some XV9 crisis suits, thats just my suggestion

Invaders (Salamanders Sub-Chapter) A few vairous scratch built models
Just getting started A few models with more to come

Wait and see about Tyranids. I can picture you being happy with genestealers and the supposed anti-tank they're getting in January. (Which is also what I'm going for, incidentally.)

I wouldn't get too excited about nid AT, the pyrovore just shoots melta torpedoes, nothing really that amazing.
