I ordered the 8 strong gang, but was wondering what sort of numbers should I go for having in the gang, and shall I have a lot of spare models with alternative weapons available to them?

Whilst I'm sure it's entirely possible to play a game with a box-fresh gang, if you ever play any campaigns you're going to want alternate models. Both to represent changing armament and additional gangers.
Another thing to consider is that you need only take 25% casualties to potentially end the game; a bigger gang can afford to take more casualties. More gangers will also ensure that you can always work all your territories during campaigns.
So to summarise, yes, have more models.

Ok, I'll see what I can get. Apart from the booster from GW (which I'm not sure will even provide anything different) what other manufacturers make something in a similar scale that would be useable?

Let me just copy out my "modelling sites" bookmark folder...
http://www.hasslefreeminiatures.co.uk/index.php
A little smaller than average - check individual model heights to see if they'd be noticably smaller.
http://www.reapermini.com/
Reaper's Chronoscope range is excellent, and frequently updated. There's also plenty of fantasy stuff.
http://www.arcaneminiatures.co.uk/anima-tactics-miniatures.asp?offset=0
These are a little taller than average. It's pretty much a fantasy line though, so might only be useful for sword wielders.
http://www.arcaneminiatures.co.uk/infinity-miniatures.asp
Not bought any of these yet myself, but there's a great variety of minis armed with everything from rifles to rocket launchers.
http://www.arcaneminiatures.co.uk/wyrd-miniatures.asp
Again, not bought any of these yet, but there's a few choice figures that would be good for an escher gang.
http://www.blackscorpionminiatures.com/default.asp
I picked up some of their pirate girls to use for juves - £6.50 for 4, or another pack at £7.50 for 5.
http://www.shop.microartstudio.com/index.php
Only found the one mini here I'd consider using, but you might find the site useful for other things.
http://www.maxmini.eu/store/
Okay, this one I've got just for potential conversion bits. They've just released a nice new heavy machine gun.
http://www.theassaultgroup.co.uk/store/home.php
Various theatres of war represented, including modern, in both bits form and actual minis, though I suspect the latter will be of lesser interest to you.
http://www.barrule.com/workshop/index.html
Mainly scenery, but check out the Heresy minis under sci-fi figures. Not the original source, but the original source has an awful website.
Uh, I think that's everything. Do try not to end up with the same gang as me

I use the old metal Catachans as Orlocks but the new ones would work too, especially for Goliaths.
Easy to use for heavies (2nd heavy with a grenade launcher?), and you probably have a friend who has a few too many Catachans.

I'd definitely recommend checking Reaper's Chronoscope range, they usually release 4-6 a month. They have a good preview page and it's already got some awesome ones. (I'll point out some nice ones later in an edit)
AEWW2 would have some good options too. There are some female models that could definitely be promoted to biker chicks, and a lady with a very menacing wrench.
Are you going for any particular look for your Escher, or sticking with the classic GW take?
DreadNote: how did you find the Black Scorpion pirates lined up against GW stuff? I always thought they were closer to Privateer's scale.

They're pretty much the same size as GW and Chronoscope, give or take a millimetre or so depending on the model. Slightly poorer quality sculpts than others - softer detail, flash etc - but certainly not terrible, and considering the price I can't complain much.

I'll take a look at Reaper, but it's very hard to get hold of them in the UK (or was at least around a year ago) due to their policies with stores here. You might get lucky, and some might appear in a game store occasionally but it's generally only the fantasy range.
Are you going for any particular look for your Escher, or sticking with the classic GW take?
I'm looking for a sort of 70s/80s look, and I'll be supplementing the GW ones as well.

Why not just order them online? Shipping's reasonable.

The Hasslefree stuff is very good, just mix 'em in with other manufacturers to get a wider viety of body size and shapes. The guns can be modded simply by adding a las barrel to the muzzle. I also have a lot of the Heresy stuff, and barring the website the quality is good with good weapon swap options. Barrule does great scenery and building matrials, and I would agree with all the above posts about where to get your crack. Have a look at the Forum of Doom for WiP's from the manufacturers, as there are new De'Laques coming from Heresy.

Hehehe, we just started up a new Necromunda campaign, and first night I faced two Escher gangs. Neither one had a single Escher model. First one used old metal Harlequins, and the second used Dark Eldar Wyches.

Haha, I have a bunch of Eldar harlequins from the old RT line but I'd probably use them as Spyrers rather than a regular gang (if not houseruling them).
Do any of the default models come with a Flamer? otherwise, is there a model that will convert easily with a GW flamer? (I have some SM and Guard flamers spare to use).

I played ecsher! I miss the days of my hipshooting, sprinting with two gun mojo leagangers (I forgot what the 2 pistol skill is called!)
And nothing scared me more than Delaque heavies with infiltrate and bulging bisceps
That game was so much fun but no one wants to play it anymore.
FYI Necromunda Heavies and jakara spyers make great inquisitorial henchmen
Edit* for soem reason this was mention to be posted on the other necromunda thread. anyway to my knoweldge there are only escher heavy stubber and plasma gun models. The plasma gunner is incredibly expensive as its nearly impossible to get yoru hands on. Usually on ebay for at least $50. As for conversions. there is an escher model with two ccws I think it has one arm raised and one lower, if you chop of the lwoer weapon you can easily fit it with some type of flamer. Not though generally space marine weapons are to large equip 1 handed on escher ganagers. You may have better luck converting lasgunners.
