Just wondering what my fellow wargamers do when playing casual, friendly games.

For example, when I play with my friends, on Annihilation, we play it the proper way - last man standing. No kill points, just because it's fun. If it's a stalemate, then we just call it a draw. The only downside is when my friend has just a LR, and I have no melta.

What about you guys?

Victory Points over here.

I absolutely loathe KP's, TBH.

Some people play to win, some people play for fun. Me? I play to kill toy soldiers.

We tend to ignore the objectives and go 'last one standing wins'. Occasionally 'least mangled that makes it off the tabletop after doing what they said they would do' wins.

I blame the fact I play DE, I can't really claim objectives against SM, I have to kill them all to keep them. So it sort of becomes a total annihilation game anyway.

I tend to roll a D6 for mission, and roll a D6 for setup, and that's what we play.

The terrain over here usually just stays as it is, we sort of ask "this good?" "I guess" and skip that part of setup.

House Rules?

Well... we don't play 5th Ed, so does rewriting 40K and all its Codices count as a 'house rule'?

We don't count the little ups and downs as inches. Also you can go through stuff your base doesn't fit through.

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

the flgs that I found in my new area (recently moved) has a no special characters or uniques rule. I'm not sure how I feel about this even though I generally don't use SCs. I think its unduly harsh vs marines or other theme armies that need SCs for the rules they give an army rather than their stats.

when any model with squigs as wargear dies then the squig stays in play using the stats on zogwort's page in the 'dex and moves 2d6 inches in scatter dice direction each turn. That's always fun to play...

None, I play by the book. This includes 'the most important rule'. Should something wonky come along it shall be handled on a case by case basis. It may seem brash, but I'm actually a very forgiving player.

Our local T.O. dislikes uniquely named special characters in WHFB, because Grimgor Ironhide singlehandedly marched through half of his 3k of Dark Elves. So when playing against him or in a WHFB event he runs, no special characters...

No dice on the game board. We roll in a shoe box or something similar. Fewer fights abouot cocked dice and rolls off the table. Also, 5 minute look-up time for rule chalenges. If you cant find it in 5, your loss.

We just ignore KPs altogether and go straight to Victory Points. Everyone at the FLGS agrees that KPs basically suck for everyone, and VPs are more balanced in determining who wins.

Oh, and we don't really have draws in any games - whenever a draw occurs because of objectives, it goes to VPs to see who won.

These seem a bit extreme to me. I'd probably argue both dice rules until I was blue in the face.

As for the 5 minute look up... I can get behind that, but I think I'd do a roll off at the end of the 5 minutes rather than forcing the person to submit.

If a dice manages to land on a corner and stay there, Tzeentch is interfering. Daemons and CSM auto pass, everyone else auto fails.

Jammed on terrain doesn't count, that's just a tilt and rerolled.

There's only one house rule that applies to three races, namely: SM, Tyranids, Orks.

Instead of falling back on a failed leadership/morale the unit or what's left of it has to charge the closest enemy models if they are within charge range otherwise they all automatically die.

It's not always applied, especially when new players join but once they get into the club the rule sticks.

1. We have a specially made and decorated dicebox to roll in. Any dice, besides scatter dice and the two accompanying dice, must end up in the dice box.

2. We have added a third objective to Capture and Control (too many draws).

3. We have changed deployment in Dawn Of War to 18" from own board edge.
