Like the title says I am looking to get started in Battlefleet Gothic I just need to know what I need to start besides the rules and a fleet. Also what size board do you play on?

I play on a 4' square baord most of the time, although depending on tactics/fleet a 6'X4' would give a more balanced game. As long as you've got the rules, a fleet and the ordanace counters (plus the usual dice etc) you're good to go. It's one of the few games that I enjoy playing with little to no scenary. It's a fantastic game, I wish I knew more people who played and there was easier access to the models these dyas. Some of them seem to be quite pricy now, guessing assume this is something to do with small production runs.

Oh, and space marine fleets are fun but don't expect to win very often unless your playing certain missions. The fleets not designed for fleet engagement type games at all. Although launching many thunderhawks in one turn which proceed to destroy enemy ord but survive themselves can create some pricless comments from your opponents!

Thanks for your help and one more question for now. Are the epic order dice the same as the BFG order dice?

you know you can get all the rules for free right on GW web site eh?

All you need to do, I believe is just buy the models, but I could be wrong. Can anyone correct me here?

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the rules are available as a free download on the specialist games site. There's also somep pretty cool extras there too if i remember. I tried to order some ships form them though and recieved a refund saying that the moulds were being redone so they weren't available to order!!! Just hunt around ebay a bit is you're struggeling. I miss the days where the plastic sets were just £8

When things were cheap - those were fantastic days, heh. Am a BFG player myself, used to love playing it and have been leaning toward starting it up again (still have me old ships and most of the counters/dice and all that) - I used to play as Chaos... slaughtering whoever I could for the chaotic pestilence that is Nurgle.

E-bay might be your best bet for models to muck about with, as has already been mentioned by covenant84 the official website seems to be having troubles manufacturing the models. Hope you enjoy the game!

This seems like an appropriate thread to post this: What would people suggest as a good fleet to start with? I realise the discussion upto this point have not been about fleet choice but it does say about starting BFG.

I've already taken a nose about the rules on the GW site and understand the basics but, with a bit of tourney coming together at my club (In Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk - if anyone's interested) I thought I'd dip my finger into another pie, so to speak.

I play Marines in 40K but would like to try a different fleet, anyone have some ideas? I'm yet to do decide on tactics so will sway wherever you veterans breeze.

Thanks, EdM

I'd advise starting with either chaos or Imperial. If you play marines get used to loosing more often than winning!. IIRC, chaos are more long range shooty, and use plenty of hanger decks, while imperial are more effective at a closer range and fight well as 'ships of the line' like back in the olden days My usual chaos tactic is to release loads (and i mean LOADS of bomber craft etc) as a main offensive, shoot as much as possible with long range guns then close asap to finish off with boarding. Imperials, i usually start with a large spread of torpedos, followed by another behind it to force the enemy fleet to split, send a small contingent of my own after one half to keep them busy (you'll loose these ships!) while heading after the other half. Devide and conquer and all that. If doing this also try to use any terrain to prevent the enemy fleet coming backtogether once they have split course direction. The only way I've found to counter this effectivly is to not split and take the damage! The torps won't cause major damage in most cases but it's VERY unnerving when you have 30+ torpedos headed for the centre of your fleet! Also when boarding try to combine more than one action to give yourself better odds. They can go horribly horribly wrong sometimes!

Thanks
So, basically... With Chaos, you hang back for a bit and use/abuse your long-range guns, then rush forwards and board. As for Imperials, scare them with torpedoes then munch the ships when they split - but at a closer range than Chaos.

Since posting last, I've actually the choice down to Chaos or Tau - as something different but with some nice rules.

The campaign is played with (at least) 750pts - any ideas on what I could get hold of. (If you'd like details of the campaign, PM me and I'll send you a link).

Thanks, EdM

I'd say a solid cruiser core, maybe a grand cruiser as a flagship and some escorts to protect the rears from enemy craft slipping around you. You could squeeze in a battleship but from experience that's a lot of points for 750 - your better of spreading you structure points over cheaper cruisers. You can also get more shields from several cruisers than a battleship - more 'wasted' shots by your opponent before they get to damage your ships. Although the bigger battleships are much more likly to do well if you go for boarding actions. Depends on how you want to play. Both Choas and Imperials can be tailored to fight in different ways, what I suggested is how I have had success with them.

That's great, thanks. I reckon that I'll go Chaos - they seem to fit how I play 40K and I love their Daemonship.

I'll keep updating on my tourney progress as well as painting etc.

Thanks for the help, Covenant. (Is there a Rep button or similar? I'm not too good on Dakka...)

Ork's guns are very close range and generally with random firepower. Orks get free "All ahead full" orders so they can close generally faster than the other races. They are also good at boarding and ramming I believe.

In theory, terror ships are probably the best all around Ork ships due to carrying fighta bombas and well as some good close range weapons. I haven't played against orks in years though, so my info may be outdated.

apart from what endgame said i know little about orks, have never played against them myself. I think rocks are pretty useful though, and hulks takea lot of shooting before they go pop!

Yeah, with the ordinance limit rule there's no longer swarms of attack craft for Chaos. Or imp, or anyone else, for that matter. Much to my Imp fleets horror.

You guys might try www.portmaw.com they're one of the better bfg forums still going.
