I'm writing some fluff for my chapter and I have a question ...
I know it may seem obvious to some people but I just want to be sure, Do SM snipers fire Bolts or are they Las Rifles?
I know Impy Guard ones are Las Rifles and I don't see why SM ones wouldn't also be but if anyone can offer some info and maybe the source they got it from Cheers

There are several differences between the solid slug rifles and the long-las, that being while the long-las is an instant hit weapon and therefore has pinpoint accuracy, it will reveal the sniper's position when fired, which a solid slug rifle would not do if equipped with a suppressor as they usually are.
Scouts, who have the Job of Infiltrating, remaining Unseen and gathering Intel, while taking opportunistic potshots, would Not fare well if they were revealed every time they fired.
Also, take a look at the Sniper Rifles the scouts use:
I'm no Gun Nut, but that looks very much like a suppressor to me

Solid slug sniper rifles don't use silencers, they are simply to loud in many cases. Instead they are often so loud that you can't tell where they are.
Regardless, I doubt the scout marines fire solid slug- why else would there be power cables running to the rifle? And if they were all that concerned about not being found they would think twice about bringing a missile launcher.

Solid Slug != Explosive Powered Projectile. The Power Cables could be an electrical firing system.

Who says that's a suppressor? Looks like a coherent light convergence manifold to me.

40K and common sense don't mix well.
The construction of those rifles looks very much like lasguns, but I don't know. Those cables could be part of the scopes? Holographic sights, nightvision etc. Or maybe they are railguns/coilguns?

"the Space marine sniper rifle or the Astartes M40/A patten sniper rifle fires a small dart made from a deadly neuro-toxin chemical. the liquid chemical frozen into a a dart or sliver within the gun before it is fired. unerring accuracy is afforded by a low power beam of invisible laser which drives and guides the chemical dart to its target. if the target is armored, the beam automatically pulses when the rifle is fired, punching a tiny hole which allows the toxic dart penetrate." Actually it sounds like there is no "slug" component at all, no needle. Seems like it first cuts a hole in the armor just before it injects some poison into the target via high velocity penetration. Kind of like a lasgun combined with one of the high volume inoculation guns they use in the cattle industry.

I think the cables deal with the optics that all the scout sniper wear on their heads. Even as someone more than familiar with firearms, I cant really determine if its a ballistic or laser weapon. In terms of it being a conventional (or dart firing) weapon, it has a small tube under the barrel which could be part the gas system which would allow for cyclic semi-auto fire. Also, that has to be a suppressor on the front. The ridges and details where the fixture meets the barrel could conceivably be the interfaces for a QD suppressor. The only problem with it being a projectile weapon would be the lack of a magazine. At least, nothing looks like a conventional one. There is that detail on the right side, but it dosn;t look like any side loader I've ever seen, not would it look like any magazine in the Imperium. As for it being a laser weapon, well, I was a soldier. Not a physicist. Everything that makes it look like a conventional weapon argues against it being a laser weapon in my eyes, however. I will admit that the wires leading to a power pack could be feasible, and that the protrusion on the side could more conceivably be a power pack than a bullet magazine. Just my 2 cents. I know trying to look at 40k realistically is futile, but I've got nothing better to do with my Saturday than nerdebate.

Why is this still being debated? Dnecro already posted the explanation of what the gun does. Little more needs to be said.

One of the metal sniper scount models (the kneeling one) is loading a cartridge of some kind into the side port.

The lexicanum for the needler rifle or w/e also states marine scouts use them.
Also explains the wires, as using them for the optics/ scope would be overkill (not to mention that the scopes and headgear appear to be able to detach no problem)
