Hello all, I'm going to try running a friendly tournament over the summer with my FLGS. I have a sample rules sheet here:
https://docs.google.com/Doc?docid=0AevjqcpvRFMKZGN0dnpqZ21fMXY1ejQ2N2hw&hl=en
Just looking for some CC / input as to what should be changed to make it more enjoyable for the players.

A few things:
Jesters Cap is my FLGS.
Times were left blank because I need to discuss it with them.
I personally do not like the INAT FAQ as in some cases I feel they blatantly changed the rules (I will not rant about it here) so please don't suggest I use it, the GW FAQ's will stand.

Other than that any input is appreciated, thanks

Trade rules: lower rep trades ships 1st. - I ship within 2 business days, if it will be longer I will contact you & explain. - I will NOT lie on customs forms, it's a felony, do not ask me to mark sales as "gifts". Free shipping applies to contiguous US states.

Looks pretty good. I personally use an entry fee of $5, it gives decent prizes at the ~10 participant level, and is affordable.

I use the INAT FAQ at my tournaments (starting at my last one) just because it's fairly complete. Since you won't be using it, I would advise posting common rulings on your local website/forums/bulletin board, in order to keep the complaints to a minimum. Being consistent is the most important part here.

I also, do not allow proxies. We're not strictly WYSIWYG, but it's encouraged. Proxies are a bit much, IMO. Casual play they are fine, but you start getting weird LOS issues, and a whole host of other annoying stuff that's best left to casual play.

I do not use comp either. I personally feel it's too subjective, and there's no real fair way to go about it that works for all armies. We have a sportsmanship score, as well as a painting score, but those are used for a "Grand Prize" I total up the number of wins/losses/draws, ect over the course of 4 tournaments or so, throw in the averaged Sports/Painting score, and award a few extra prizes at the end of a tournament series. The tournaments also escalate in points, we start at 500 and end at 1750. These two things seem to keep a fairly regular crowd, at least so far!

The biggest bit of advice I have for you, is to be open about whatever you do. Ask the players what they think, and what they want. You have the final decision in all matters, of course, but if people don't like what you are doing, they won't come!

Have fun, and good luck!

All of this is good advice. The suggestion for an entry fee is solid - it not only provides for a prize pool/costs pool, but it also provides a little "buy-In" for the event. Nothing worse than filling a tournament with sign-ups and only seeing 25% actually show-up.

The last suggestion is most important, get the community involved and have them tell you what they want in a tournament. I run a monthly event here in Chicago and the biggest surprise I had was that the community wanted to require the armies to be fully painted, so we have a 3-color minimum standard in place. By incorporating the communities wants and giving them a sense of ownership you will see more return for your next one.

Here's a description of the events I run: (sorry mods it links another site)

No problem linking to another site, as long as your post isn't a pure plug for someone else's site. And heck, we're usually okay with a certain number of those, too.

Some important information that is not listed is what percentage of scores are in each category and what range they have.

Also, this may be a dead horse, but the comp category needs to be better described. 'Themed', 'fun' and 'purely for winning' are increadibly subjective and give the players no basis to decide what army to bring.

I do like the sports scoring, as to having to provide a reason for any non-average scores. Granted, I'd include the caveat that thier army list is not a valid reason to dock someone's sports scores.

Thanks guys I probably forgot to edit the google doc. I dropped comp.
On Proxies - I'll disallow most things but I know some people prefer the look of a soul grinder to a defiler. Just to avoid headache I'll probably drop that too.
$10 is pretty standard for my area, almost every tournament I play in is $10-$20 range.
On percentage scores - there aren't any really. Painting, sportsmanship & game play are going to be 100% separate.
Added how P/M will be decided (I know it's open for abuse but I'm just going to use the honor system & hope it doesn't happen, naive maybe but I feel it'll make people feel more involved)
I'll be sure to ask what the players want when the event draws closer (Won't be until June at the earliest) Just trying to iron out a rough frame work now so I can get it to the FLGS owner to be approved.
Thanks again all.

The thing about proxies, is you need to be consistent. For example, if you let someone take a Soul Grinder as a Defiler, why can't I take a Razorback as a Whirlwind? Conversions are fine (and highly encouraged!) in my tournament, for example we have one guy that converted his Great Unclean One out of a carnifex, and a bunch of other random bitz, and it looks awesome. As long as everyone is clear on what is what, and what is allowed, before the tournament, you should be good.

i'm a proponent of sportmanship and comp at tourneys (as well as painting) but i'd recommend using a checklist like adepticon does for them. right now, someone can give another person -5 for sportmanship and just list "they were a complete prick" for the reason. asking for people to just write stuff in is trouble. since you're doing a very local event, hopefully you won't have too much trouble. i've run things at conventions (not 40k tournies but other games) and asking ANYTHING of lazy fat bastard gamers is a problem. 1/3 of the time you'll get penmanship that is horrible and you won't be able to make out anything. another third will simply skip the reasons. if you're lucky, the last third will actually give you something you can work with. i've seen people give volunteers a very hard time when they were asked to simply print their real names on their con badges in addition to having their "nicknames" on them. save yourself the hassle; go with checklists.

Well the thing is with comp, should they give - points they MUST provide a valid reason & be specific. Otherwise I'm just going to ignore it

Check this article out on Capture and Control. Capture and Control: Preparing for ‘Ard Boyz – An Organizer’s Perspective It pertains to Ard Boyz but the advice works for regular tournaments as well. Hope it is helpful.
