Here is the way of checker patterns. In my technique.
[Thumb - 001.JPG]
First start with the lining with codex grey, Then fill in every OTHER square with codex grey.

[Thumb - 003.JPG]
Add a very small amount of skull white, add this color on each entire square.

[Thumb - 012.JPG]
Next add a little more skull white, Highlight the top to bottom, leaving the bottom corner of each square.

[Thumb - 018.JPG]
Again adding more white, paint the very corner to about the middle of each square in this color.

[Thumb - 021.JPG]
After adding more white paint just the top of the square, followed by a true skull white highlight at just the corners.

[Thumb - 022.JPG]
Then clean up the black boxes and reshape them to a straight formation. Use straight codex grey in an L shape on the very top of each black box to highlight.

[Thumb - 031.JPG]
And, there you have it.

Wow, never thought of doing it that way.

Is that Apple Barrel paint in the background? Now I don't feel so guilty! The checks look great.

good stuff, thanks!

I kept looking at the shoulderpad through the different photos and was like "what the heck, where's the technique? They're all finished!"

then I realized I was missing something obvious.

As for the apple barrel paint, i do use it on some stuff, Bases, Drybrushing tanks, that kind of thing. Considering those things dont really need super quality paint.

Yeah, the first time I was doing a base with citadel paint I got 3 strokes in, realized how much it would take and was like... wait, no. I got some $1.79 no-name paint from the craft store, and have been using it since. Even if you use the finest of paints on your minis, you should definitely have at least a tube of black and white of the cheap stuff.
