I'm looking for opinions on which way to go army wise. A few caveats before we begin, we already have 4 people who are all devoted to this project. Without naming names; one has been featured in white dwarf for his tyranids, one has one the last 2 BFG best painted awards at adepticon 10, and 09, I myself have beaten the previous member in personal painting competitions and the 4th is an amazing converter and has entered numerous painting competetions on other websites (though imo his modeling is much better than his painting. 2 previous members entered a previous Fantasy Team with a carnival of chaos, however they lost ironically to another Carnival army. To my knowledge no one has won a GD, but I believe that is more of a time constraint than lack of skill.

We get together on Sunday to discuss armies and strategies and I just figured I'd ask around here first to see what people think.

Its my understanding that we'd like to shoot for best painted/best appearance, however on a personal note I'd also like a shot at winning best overall. As far as best painted goes I've narrowed it down to three basic catagories; Painting, Converting, Basing( I am also assuming that each army can be based the same standard so don't include this.) So I'd like to base an army that magnifies theses aspects while also provides a decent chance of winning. Ill break down the armies in alphabetical order with strengths and weaknesses based on my 40k knowledge. Any feedback would be great and I'm looking for an army that can convert well as well as does well on the table. Any links to decent army build ideas for this type of format would be helpful as well.

I understand that certain armies may change/get updated in the next year, but lets just go off current codexes. Without further ado here is my list(I also didn't include any armies which I believe to be unconvertable/too underpowered, but if you have any good suggestions feel free.) Also feel free to add pros/cons to any army.

Chaos Space Marines
Pros: Excellent converting oporrtunity. Forgeworld offers a lot of extra parts/kits. Great Fluff(such as one army of each god). Versitility (many varied strong troop choices), Great Daemon Princes
Cons: Not Amazingly top-tier if fluff is used correctly, balanced lists could have problem with optimized lists

Chaos Demons
Pros: Excellent converting/painting, Great convertable monstrous creatures, can be very deadly in CC
Cons: DS problems, Not much support outside DPs and GW requiring alot of converting by Green Stuff/others/ Not amazingly optimized and can be negated easily.

Inquisitions
Pros: Can be powerful if used correctly and in tandem with other armies.
Cons: Poor Fluff, Mosltly metal models if optimized resulting in less converting opportunities.

Dark Eldar
Pros: Can be devastating when used right
Cons: Old codex, Metal models, not much variability, not much converting potential

Eldar
Pros: Have seen decent conversion, requires alot of skill to play, alot of variablity
Cons: Not great conversions, poor forgeworld support

IG
Pros: Renegade Cultists can be combined with CSM, Alot of FW support, Many Tanks to convert, alot of versitility
Cons: Lists at 1K will need to be maxed out either troops or Mech and if these two dont work well togeher it might not work well.

Necrons
Pros: Not many
Cons: Old codex, Little converting opportunity, few codex options, little FW support

Orks
Pros: Decent FW suport, Alot of Variability, Alot of converting potential.
Cons: Alot of models and work, Not sure how it would perform against top tier.

Space Marines
Pros: Decent Variablility, Decent FW support, Pre-heresy potential, decent variablity
Cons: Little converting oppurtinities, Hard to conbine lists,

Tau
Pros: decent Variablity, Tanks allow decent painitng oppurtunities
Con: Lower Tier Army, Poor FW support, hard to convert

Tyranids
Pros: Decent FW support, Decent conversion oppurtinities
Cons:Haven't really seen the new dex so Idk how it performs

I obviously combined a few armies, eg., SM and am willing to combine armies like CSM and Renegade IG, but Id like to stick with general fluff on the armies. Let me know what you think, and any ideas

Think of the conditions under which the army will be displayed. The 40K hall is crazy busy, lighting is adequate but a bit yellow, and judges/players will be under time constraints to review. Start with something that is both big and bright. Once you get their attention, knock them out with fine details. You need to make people take a second and third look at the army.
