I am considering picking up a small Imperial fleet for BFG. It is a game I have always liked the look of, but never actually played, and speaking to a guy from my local gaming group at the Student Nationals this year reminded me of it. However, it is greatly likely that any fleet will find more use as Dark Heresy props than in actual games.

I have not got access to the rules, or time to digest fleet lists, but I get the impression that acquiring a couple boxes of cruisers and a battleship would create a serviceable fleet. Is this correct? I am ideally looking to get myself a fleet sufficient to take part in your average friendly, small enough that I won't lose interest painting it and yet be quite cheap; around £50 is likely to be my interest threshold. I fall out of favour with painting super fast, but BFG models look to be moderately fool-proof in that regard. The GW website informs me that I would pay £44 for a battleship and four cruisers; enough to grab paint (black, grey, maroon, gold would be my intended colours, I guess) and a couple brushes.

Any help would be appreciated.

Yep.

Battleship/4 cruisers/some escorts is neat for the average 1500pts.

An actually, 1,500 is a pretty normal size for a game of BFG, so building to that level will give you a fairly adequate fleet. And, if you work out some form of magnetizing the weapons bits, you will have a pretty versatile force on your hands as well. This works because in the only thing that differentiates IN and Chaos ship classes is the modular weapons pieces.

I did a tutorial on magnetizing BFG imperial cruisers:

I ended up grabbing the following:

Mars Battlecruiser
Gothic Cruiser
Lunar Cruiser
Lunar Cruiser
6 x Sword Frigates

This forms a neat little 1000pt fleet.

And I have to admit that I didn't magnetise the cruisers; I am a deeply average modeller, and just couldn't bring myself to bother with anything more than a standard assembly. Using green stuff to fill in the cracks in the model will be about the most advanced that you will see me get. Thanks for the tip though, I can imagine that it is handy for those people that use it.

That's okay, you have a pretty solid foundation for your fleet. Good luck with it!
