styrofoam
modeling sand/grass
glue
tools:
hobby knife

tips when glue is dry
you can paint them
spray paints are best for it

Covering foam in PVA glue helps alleviate any issues with spraying them. You need to be sure your piece is completely covered though as any spot left clean would be quickly pitted and melted out.

House paints are a good way around that of course and you don't have to worry at all about the foam melting out.

I do second the sentiments on photos helping to make this a true 'tutorial'. Without them, it's not much to go by.

Not to worry a bit! You should definitely check out the link posted above and when you've got the photos, you can add them in!

For the record, I've used this method in the past and it does work out for a quick bit of terrain that requires little in the way of effort!

Also, if you're looking for something a little sturdier, you can layer pieces of plasticard on each other, and then glue rocks on top of that. Definitely more of a bother, but the final product is neigh on indestructible.
