In terms of wysiwyg, do people actually use the Skaven slaves as slaves, or some other models? They seem really old and silly looking, not to mention expensive at $15 for 5... when you need like, what, 80 of them in most lists? I was just curious.

Terrible rules-writing no doubt, but given that you basically can't play it RAW in any kind of sensible way lets you know that it can't be right.

Well, GW says that you can use the unarmored clanrats from the new Clanrat boxes to make Slaves, giving you 10 slaves and 10 clanrats for the $33 box. :(

Me? I'm working on my Skaven's fluff to make them SO egotistical that they won't use Skaven as slaves. Skaven are too good for that. Instead, I'm gonna collect random models from every other army, dirty them up, put them in chains/shock collars/lobotomized to make them the pitiful slaves that the inferior races are meant to be! YES YES! *squeek* Hail to the Horned Rat! HAIL TO THE SKAVEN!

Ahem. Yes, quite.

If I ever build Skaven then I'm going to use Ogres for Slaves/fillers. Probably chain their arms together and paint skaven symbols on them.

If your just starting skaven I would recommend using the HE models that you get from the new starter. Unless of course you sell/trade them for more skaven.

I'm using am mix of models, night goblins, skaven, gnoblars and humans built off of some zombies with empire and mordheim heads. The humans/zombie guys make them look all raggedy and malnourished.

Yes, one half of the Skaven Clanrat sprue was specifically designed to represent slaves. They are notably bedraggled with whipping scars on their backs. Two even have manacles around their ankles.

That said, there is no rule stating that you have to use any specific model for skaven slaves and/or clanrats. I just paint them with brown and cream muddied clothes which makes them stand out as inferior. So long as your opponent is aware which models are slaves, I don't think it matters.

If I get around to having slaves, they'll be a mix of as many different thinsg as I can manage.

Though guards may sleep and ships may lay at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire.

All my slaves will be wearing orange.

When my son heads off to basic next month, I'll probably be stealing some of his night goblins, too. IIRC, the fluff mentions their heavy use by Clan Mors. Come to think of it, I may buy some gobbos and put them in orange robes.

I know people who use basic clanrat models because they're less expensive than slave models, and they just paint them differently.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

I use the clanrat models and just make them look a little more slavey...

they all have different weapons so it looks like they just scrounged up what they could to fight with...

While the clanrat units all have the same weapon/spears and look a little more regimented.

I've seen a mix of humans and goblins and it came off very well. Elves could also work pretty well but most dwarfs are right out I think since they are all heavily armored.

Likewise on the 'underequipped' clanrats as slaves.

I also dug out the old goblins I had leftover from the 4E box set (the elves have long since been 'Druchiified' for my DE army) and rearmed them with skaven weapons. If I need more than 160, I can always get out my Bret Men-at-Arms; they look pretty grungy too...

Yeah I'm gonna be using a mixture of things, I won't be upgrading to a large list any time soon so every time I play a battle i will blag/buy/steal a couple of basic infantry from the opposing player and 'enslave' them, plus an ogre/troll/etc or two for unit fillers.

Since it's a clan skryre themed force, they will all be armed with various tools (hammers, picks, shovels, tongs, etc etc) to represent they are toilers press-ganged into combat.

My plan was too use the new skaven models including the starter set as clanrats, and use the old clanrats as slaves, since they look smaller.

But why is the rum gone?

Their bases are different sizes I think. And Ogres would just eat the Skavens or get killed trying. You need to have more than an On/Off switch to be a slave. Unless they were lobotomized.

Get some smurf toys.

They're just asking for it.

Its pretty easy in 8th edition now..

Any skaven with a spear = slave.. Any skaven with a handweapon + shield = clan rat

Funny stuff. You could just make a hat with a stick on top and like a piece of beef hanging from a string. Kind of like those carrots they'd dangle in front of horses to make them walk (though not sure if they really did that, just saw it in really old movies).
