I've never played Flames of War (or any historical), but lately I've had the urge. My initial leaning was to go German, but I have an inkling that WWII Germans are about as common as WH40K Space Marines, so I've elected to go Soviet. I figure that I could start with a Mid-War list, then tool it up for Late War compatibility later. Unfortunately, I don't have any inkling of army sizes in Flames of War (both in terms of point size and model count), so I was wondering if anyone could fill me in a bit, or post up/direct me to an example of any typical, combined arms Soviet Mid-War lists that might be helpful?

Thanks, the help is appreciated.

I would suggest you get a couple of games in first, then decide.

Soviets are not to be entered into lightly, they've got the largest model count in the game, so will be quite expensive. Think IG and your not far off.

Model count doesn't particularly scare me. I'm working on IG in WH40K and I plan on using some cheaper alternatives to the official FoW models for my first army, to cut my teeth on the scale. Thanks for the word of warning, though.

So should I expect a typical Soviet force to include 80 Infantry models and 11 Vehicles, like my Imperial Guard does at the standard game size?

To give you an idea, A rifle Battalion can have 1-3 Rifle Companies each of which will have 9, 18 or 27 stands of infantry each with 4-5 figures on it plus extras (command. MG, light mortar).

A full strength rifle company would have 125 figures (assuming you put 4 per stand) -- this would be worth 370 points out of your (typical) 1500

The most expensive tanks (KV-85s) go for 1035 points for 5, T-34s are 10 for 605 points and T-60s 8 for 135

All these point values go up for Guards units (except the Heavy Tanks which have to be Guards)

I would recomned not to go with Sovijets, since they have just to much foot soldiers. And because germans and western allies just ripps them to sherds. Go for either Brithis or Germans. But if you decided to go with the Russians, get lots and lots of tanks. Saves you cash and makes the army more dureabel.

A mid war soviet infantry army @ 1500 points would be
64 inf stands at 4 models per stand
4-6 vehicles
10-12 arty stands with a guns and 4 or so arty crewmen

One advantage of sovient infantry is that the figures are the same for Early war (when its released)
as well as Mid and late war.

However, you want to check out the local FOW action - if everyones playing Market-Garden (Europe LW) or Blitzkrieg (Europe EW) then you are going to be sort of on the sidelines.

I just noticed you are in Columbus, Ohio.

Ther is a large FOW group called Golf Company (a chapter of Game Korps) in the Columbus area.

They put on a large FOW tourney at Origins.

Thanks for the head's up about Golf Kompanie. I talked with one of the guys that organizes some of the local events around here. Apparently the store that GK plays at is literally across the street from my apartment. They mostly play Late War, so it looks like I'll be trading those KV-85s for IS-2s.
