Hi guys, i have a quick question about overwatch in necromunda.

Can you shoot on overwatch at a model that did not move that turn? i know the rules say overwatch enables you to shoot in the opponents movement phase as a target presents its-self. I interpret the spirit of the rule to be, "model A is watching an area eg a door anticipating model B to come through it, model B comes though and gets whacked"

Basically the scenario was my opponent had a heavy in cover, i had a heavy and a ganger in cover both with LOS to and from my opponenets heavy, and they were trading shots. I had a couple of gangers out of LOS who were going to charge across open ground and lob a frag grenade in. My opponenets heavy went on overwatch so i decided not to risk running my guys out and continued the firefight with my heavy and ganger. As soon as i declared my heavy was going to shoot, my opponent fired at him on overwatch since the other 2 were not going to come out into the open.

My arguement is the rules state overwatch is used "as a target presents its-self" since my heavy didnt do that and was there all along he shouldnt be able to shoot at him with overwatch and had wasted his shot. We agreed to disagree and because i am a quite agreeable person i let him do it and played that rule for the rest of the game.

If someone could clear this up for me i would be grateful, thanks.

Personally, I'd have thought that he should be allowed to shoot, after he's elected not to shoot in his own turn. Don't you get a -1 modifier on overwatch as well.

And - it just seems daft that he's stood there, waiting to shoot at something straight ahead of him, but not be allowed to.

Fair enough i think I'm going to have to conceed on this one then. i just couldnt see a down side to leaving everyone on overwatch (other than a REALLY dull game) but i suppose the -1 is penalty enough.

There's no inherent penalty for shooting on overwatch. There is, however, a penalty for shooting at enemies emerging from- or entering cover.

You shoot during your opponent's movement phase. You can shoot at the end of his movement phase, if he hasn't moved.

Tier 1 is the new Tactical.

The Overwatch was intended to be used in the opponents Movement phase, and should really only be used so. See Anthony Case's COmmunity Edition of the rules for clarification on cheesy overwatch usage.

Should of happened at the end of movement at the latest in my opinion, and yes when everyone starts to overwatch and not move around out of fear of being gunned down by someone else overwatching it becomes very dull very quickly.

The limitations of Overwatch make it useful in specific tactical applications but impractical in general use. A -1 mod on a d6 is a significant penalty. The possibility of other mods such as cover, distance, and movement still apply as normal.
