Alright after hitting the drawing board again i came up with this list. Doesn't have to be tourney competitive, just an competent all-comers list that i can bring to my nearest GW store.

Imperial Guard
H.Q.

-CCS:
Regimental Standard, Officer of the Fleet -95pts

Troops

-Infantry Platoon X2 = 780pts

PCS:
Medic, 3X Plasma-guns -105pts

Infantry Squad:
Autocannon, Grenade Launcher -65pts

Infantry Squad:
Autocannon, Grenade Launcher -65pts

Infantry Squad:
Autocannon, Grenade Launcher -65pts

Missile Launcher Heavy Weapon Team -90pts

-Veterans: X2 = 310
3X Melta guns
Attached Chimera: Multi-laser, Heavy Bolter -155pts

Fast Attack

-Vendetta X2- 260pts

Heavy Support

-Leman Russ Battle Tank: Heavy Bolter Sponsons -170pts

-Leman Russ Executioner: Lascannon, Plasma Sponsons – 245pts

Ordnance Battery: Single Colossus -140pts

Total: 2000pts

So how is it? I think it would do well.
Well I think.

Kinda confused why the CCS has no guns while the Platoon Command is sporting medics and plasma since they both pay the same points but one has BS4. There should probably be a commissar in the infantry squads although that'll make the regimental standard useless. The chimeras should have HF instead of hull HB. Good for close range attacks

I would agree with kenshin and drop the standard and take commissars and swap the PCS wargwear to the CCS.Or change the plasma to meltas in the CCS and/or remaining PCS,i have seen too many allies/opponents losing their own models to an exploding PG rather than causing damage to the enemy.I have yet to pluck up the courage to use a lot of plasma myself, though i know i should at least give it a go.

Well the medic helps out with the plasma but then again the melta is safer, cheaper, and gives some anti walker abilities if they get to close

If you're going to give plasma to anyone, give it to the CCS. BS 3 is garbage for a weapon you -want- to hit.

As mentioned, drop the standard, buy a commissar.

I also don't ever recommend taking an executioner w/ plasma sponsons for a couple of reasons. 1) You shouldn't be standing still enough to be able to fire all 4 weapons, (sitting tank is a dead tank, etc.) and 2) it's wayyyyyyyyyyyy too expensive. Sure, it's a TEQ threat and light armor, but you could take 3 hydras for 20 points less, scatter less and wound just as much, (people are going to roll 1s.) If you're 36" away or whatever that's 21 shots including the heavy bolter, all wounding on either 2 or 3+ against most marines.

1850 12/2/4

Playin' GKs since it was an incredibly painful experience.

-So one commissar per platoon right? Would this mean I should merge the squads always to reap the rewards or blob depending from battle to battle?
-For chimera's would a Multi-laser/Heavy Flamer config be best?
-What should I do with the executioner? Is it any good? I was under the impression I could use something to deal with 2+ saves.
-If sponsons are useless, should i drop the LRMBT Heavy Bolter sponsons?

H.Q.

-CCS:
Medic, 3X Plasma-Guns, Officer of the Fleet -155pts

Troops

-Infantry Platoon X2 = 780pts

PCS:
4X Melta-guns -70pts

Infantry Squad:
Autocannon, Grenade Launcher, Commissar-100pts

Infantry Squad:
Autocannon, Grenade Launcher-65pts

Infantry Squad:
Autocannon, Grenade Launcher-65pts

Missile Launcher Heavy Weapon Team -90pts

-Veterans: X2 = 310
3X Melta guns
Attached Chimera: Multi-laser, Heavy Flamer -155pts

Fast Attack

-Vendetta X2- 260pts

Heavy Support

-Leman Russ Battle Tank: Heavy Bolter Sponsons -170pts

-Leman Russ Executioner: Lascannon, Plasma Sponsons – 245pts

Ordnance Battery: Single Colossus -140pts

Total: 2060pts

So this is with the changes, 60pts over. What changes recommended now to the list?

so this list is better, but it's still really low on firepower. Spending 460 points for just 6 autocannons is a pretty rotten deal.

As for the extra points, that's easy. ditch the medic, and turn the executioner into a normal russ.

Hi folks, I'm looking at sorting out my IG army as it's a bit noobish and I'm struggling to beat my mates DE. I've read pretty similar tactics on several forums now. Can you just clarify exactly what you mean by "table my opponent"? It's looking like Vets in Chims are the way forward over regular infantry platoons?

Also, where do people get all these Hydras from? They all come from Forgeworld?!

"Table" means that all he has left is the blasted wreckage of his vehicles, and the smoldering ashes that were his soldiers. You wipe him out.

Both vets and platoons will perform well. The lists play out quite differently though.

You could buy from forgeworld. Or you can convert one with the chimera kit and a few extra bits. Check out my project log for some wip shots of mine.

Ah OK, thought it would be something like that.

Yeah I know it isn't but having your ass handed to you every game isn't fun either and if I can win with Mech then I'm all for it.

I've read a few times that infantry on foot tend to get slaughtered versus DE though?

I had a quick look but what are you making the hydra turrets out of? I have plenty of spare AC but no idea what to mount it to?

Thoughts? Feedback? Got 45pts to play with, was wondering if I should take the Chimera off the two Infantry Squads in the Platoon and buy another Veteran Squad in Chimera? Then I could use the two footslogger squads as bubble wrap?
