Very nice Sigur.

Sadly, it has been a long time since we were young.

@muette: Thanks very much. I read a little DE fluff again (4th/5th edition army book mostly, a bit of 7th edition too), and the bottom line seems to be: Dark Elves are super cool, but that's a given. But the useful thing is this: Witch Elves love a little dance. And cheerleaders fit that quite well I think.

@Gitsplitta: Thanks, same to you and yours! Yeah, it's been on the cards since summer 2022, when I rebased my cold one chariot from rock/snow to grass/brown ground. Glad I did it now. It kinda made me really enjoy my DElves again.

@bbb: Oh, thanks very much! Nothing like the sight of a finished army.

@mokolector: Thank you. Wow, 3000pts of Night gobbos should be quite the sight! Well, base sizes are out, bases are up for (pre?)order on the GW website, I just saw!

@Dysartes: Cheers! Well, somehow I can't get out of this painting thing. I'm mostly happy about the mix of things I get to do.

@Captain Brown: That's a sombre message. To your point, earlier today something weird happened. I was at the kebab place for some swift lunch. As usual the boss was sitting in a corner, reading the paper, as three of his underlings took care of busy crunch lunch time business. A flock of school boys entered, the 'bap place boss said "hey, young fellas. How's it going?" I'm not sure why, but I turned around as if he'd been talking to me. Which made me feel very silly as people might assume I reacted to "young fella". Which - as you mentioned - am not quite any more. A poignent experience. Btw, I recently thought of you, or your Elysians more specifically, when GW released that necromunda dune buggy truck vehicle. That's pretty much the same model as the Elysians' .....Taurus assault vehicle, right?

'ello. Last Sunday - instead of stuff I should be doing - I did one of the last things on my to-do list for the Dark Elves: Pennants for the Dark Riders!

...and look at this! Only 20% of horses are lacking their tails! That's not a bad ratio for a Warhammer army of that age.

You can also clearly see that the Dark Riders unit in the left was painted a bit later than the one in the right. Quite a different tone of purple there. But that's okay. Anyway, from this we can learn that when ever you got a figure with a lance, riding on anything, a pennon, no matter how simple, will make it look more magnificent. It's very silly, but I get a lot of joy from these pictures for some reason.

A friend of mine, upon seeing that I dug up my DElves, instantly suggested playing Warhammer 5th edition. Since the pandemic he's been putting together Warhammer armies, all 5th edition stuff. And this made him dig into his High Elves collection. So let's see what comes of this.

That sounds great! Please take pictures if you two play against each other. Love seeing two old armies facing off.

Just bought 500 25x25 in mdf. And Aos Gloomspite will complete the army because i'm little disapointed with the quantity of news minis for Old World. Love the old metal but not great fan of old plastic....

You should come up with some kind of alternative for the missing tails... They might have lost them in battle... perhaps banners or something similar?

@bbb: If and once it happens, I'll write something about it on http://tabletopstories.net/language/en/ for sure.

@moskolector: wow, that is plenty. Yeah, the whole Old World release baffles me ever since it was announced to be honest. I have no idea what GW's goal is with this, who it is for, if there will be done anything with it once they actually made enough to cover the pre-orders (which seems to be a real problem) and so on. It's very interesting.

@Gitsplitta: Yeah, I think I still should have some ACW plastic horses I could nick the tails of. Don't want my dark elven steeds' delicate behinds exposed, especially considering the weather around Naggaroth.

Those riders are gorgeous, I actually dig the different purple tones! And you are spot on about the pennons - instant majesty!

Love to see ranks and ranks of square bases in the army shot and battle pic too - nostalgia city.

Volksgrenadiers are beautiful too - high quality painting and basing on a characterful sculpt - great atmosphere in those action shots.

Thanks for sharing!

@tzurk: Thanks very much for the comment! That's a very good way to put it: "instant majesty". Yup. There's just a certain appeal to a tabletop army which can't be matched by little skirmish warbands, no matter how impressive the individual figure looks. It's just something different. In 2015 I contributed a battalion to a huge Waterloo game. An insane thing; not really practical or tactical or anything, but it just looked damned impressive. And from that alone you can draw joy. Many figures if you look at them individually didn't look great (in fact I was a bit of a carny so-and-so and made sure to make my battalion look extra bright and neat, just to stand out. And it did!), but at least to me the big multi-player battle on a big table is a certain sort of spectacle that's just lovely to look at (even though it's hard to handle and requires planning so it doesn't bog down into boringness for certain players). Also, it implies that like-minded people are around, which is also always nice. Doesn't matter which genre really; the battle could be fantasy, Ancient Macedonians vs Persians, medieval, pike&shot, horse&musket, what have you. As for the Volksgrenadiers - cheers, those were a cool project. I just love those Paul Hicks sculpts. The mix of camouflage, field grey uniforms, greatcoats in slightly diffferent colours and snow camo made for lots of extra work, but allow for some great options in terms of variation.

I realized I forgot to post something I did right before the christmas holidays:

North Star reminded me of them with a facebook post, and I couldn't think of a good reason not to get them. So I had a fun Sunday afternoon painting these (with That Song echoing in my head for hours on end, because I'd watched it as part of the research early on ).

Then I proceeded to photos and realized I got a full little warband of icy wizard ladies now!

I'm sure what I'll do with them but at some point they'll make an appearance in some fantasy skirmish game I'm sure. Hope you like them!

@IGtR=: Thanks very much for commenting!

@Colonel Jacka: Cheers; I think that TOW is leading to a lot of old armies getting refurbished. Which is nice. Because wargaming battles does have a different appeal than the skirmish-y, warband-y things, and it's all in the mix. You absolutely should get your Bretonnians out again, and then just try several rules sets.

@Gitsplitta: Thank you!

Heyhey, here's Logan all finished now:

A model which certainly leads to people having opinions. I like the model overall (third time I've done it now), but I'm just not a big fan of hovering Space Marines. In fact I think that this model could look a whole lot cooler if one just added wheels and make it a proper chariot. For me the mix of hovering and the very, very weighty designs on SM doesn't go together well. But that's just my opinion, and it's not particularly interesting. Either way, Logan certainly draws the eye.

In other news, I got to paint some Freebooter's Fate figures again! It's been a few years since I've done any of those, due to covid things, and people shifting their focus away from the game and so on. But here's a bunch of new Brotherhood figures which were released since my FBF hiatus:

Of course the figures look much nicer in real life (I've had that confirmed by many people over the years), but the pictures will have to do for internet presentation.

The day I assembled these figures I also put together a platoon of 28mm Marines (and some specOps people) for Vietnam. All Empress figures. Between those and the Freebooter's Fate figures I once again realized how much fun I have putting well-cast metal figures together. And both are really, really well cast. Just lovely. And Freebooter's Fate figures are just cool. Sure, they switched everything over to being drawn on a computer now, but things are getting a bit better there as well. Of course I miss the style Mr.Klocke (who sculpted Freebooter figures for ages), because with fewer and fewer actual sculptors being around, there's also a vast lack of individual styles now as well of course. But okay. The Freebooter figures (new and old) are cool. It's a good company, it's good that they're still around, because there are incredibly few German figure manufacturers around. Anyway, so much for Freebooter miniatures.

I also started paining some Frosthaven starter figures:

In terms of quality, they are a bit better than the Gloomhaven ones (of which I painted many, but usually didn't show because it's basically spoilers since Gloomhaven is all Legacy and all of that).

And then, adding to the aforementioned US troops for Vietnam, I put together the most American motor boat (this side of the boat from Thunder in Paradise):

Take a motor boat, armour it up a little, put a big old radar/comms/whatever mushroom on top and then fill every single available space with a machine gun. That's how you get the Light Seal Support Craft. It's gonna be a lovely project.

But before that I'm jumping head-first into a big pile of Blood Angels. All of the above is commission stuff, because spring is one of the 5 busy times of the year! Hope you like the figures!

@Gitsplitta: Cheers!

@Captain Brown: Excellent, thanks. When I showed them to my niece for the very first time she didn't call them "horrible" (because she draws a lot of joy from calling all of my figures horrible), but said "I want the Elsa one, you can keep the Anna".

Right, here I am again.

Against all my plans I actually ordered an additional figure for my Dark Elves army, but I assume it'll take a good while until it arrives. And I have other things to do anyway. Like all these Blood Angels! Here's a handful of them in a WIP state.

Hope you like them so far. I just got orders not to use any coloured helmets to depict close and fire support figures. Instead everybody in the army gets red helmets. Not my choice, but the gentleman who owns the army said so, so that's what's happening. Stil, they will end up looking lovely I'm fairly certain.

Awesome work on the Blood Angels! I'm a bit torn on the helmet color issue: on one hand, I too hate the blue lids, but on the other I love the yellow ones... Thankfully I pretty much only paint single figures or squads, so it's not a painting issue I have to actually solve

Those Freebooter's Fate minis are really cool as well, both the models and you paintwork!

Great work here mate.

Love the depth on the cloth of the ice ladies.

Appreciate your sentiment about the "coming together-ness" of a large scale hobby meet-up too. Anything to take away the sweat of a tournament setting and give more space to enjoying the creating side of the hobby is very fine with me.

Very impressed with the sheer volume of your output - and looking forward to seeing more Dark Elves in the near future!

BAs looking might fine too of course. The dreadnought panels in particular are beautiful, and I like the little effect stars and triangle panels on the camo cloaks - a unique twist on an old favourite technique.

@Captain Brown: Thanks very much!

@moskolector: Cheers, always appreciated!

@Dysartes: Thank you! Yeah, that was a fun variant of that thing people have been doing on Stealth Suits for 20 years.

@Argive: Thanks very much!

@mcmattila: Yeah, I'm simple in that regard (amongst others): If it's been like that in 2nd edition I'm good with it. I like the blue helmets, I like the yellow helmets, I can do without the golden helmets. Freebooter figures are great; one of the very few persistently present German figure manufacturers in the fantasy genre, but they've been around for ages. Originally trading in owner Werner Klocke's figures (who has a great style to his sculpts), but Freebooter Minis also moved to digital sculpting (with all the advantages and disadvantages) in recent years. Thankfully the figures still are good though! I never played the skrimish game, but it's very popular for way over 15 years now I think. Good stuff.

@tzurk: Cheers! Yeah, I'm a huge fan of the variety in the wargaming hobby, so I'm all for displaying that and the sheer choice wargamers have in terms of figure ranges, rules sets and so on. We just had that at Vienna Fantasy Gaming Con and Austrian Salute last weekend (reports of both shows below). Yeah, the Dark Elves should get their first outing in a long time next week in a 5th edition High Elves - Dark Elves grudge match.

@tommygun1918: Yeah, love Freebooter figures. That Brotherhood range is great, and I got a secret little thing for the Amazons range. These were on sale around christmas too, but I just can't really justify getting a full new range of Fantasy figures, especially skirmishy ones.

@Gitsplitta: Cheers!

Hello. I'm back. So let's catch up on things, right?

Heyhey, I'm back from VIVAT / Vienna Fantasy Gaming Convention. Here's my picture report:
https://www.battlebrushstudios.com/2024/03/vienna-fantasy-gaming-con-vivat-2024.html

...and here's some pictures of the Blood Angels!

Characters:

Heavy Intercessors:

Hellblasters:
(again, showing my 2nd edition roots. I'll always paint a plasma gun this way, unless somebody explicitly asks to have them done differently. I never got the appeal making the coil bit on top glowy. IIRC that was introduced with the Dawn of War computer game, which was pretty dark and relied a lot on glowy effects from guns and so on, not the least so they are quick and easy to identify in real-time. I mean I get the appeal, because it's an opportunity to paint something gimmicky on the figure and do some OSL and so on, but it's just not something I find all too appealing. Also [and now comes the argument boring, old people make.] - it makes so little sense to have a big, flashing light on top of your gun. I have done glowy coils on plasma guns, from pistols up to titan guns and Executioner cannons, but somehow I always preferred the classic silvery metal, especially on Imperial forces. Which is your preferred look?)

Infiltrators:

full size image: https://www.tabletopwelt.de/uploads/monthly_2024_03/infiltrators1S.jpg.e8f276a158fb48d76af5b702f84e8ed6.jpg

Intercessors:

Two Big stompy robots!

Infernus Squad:

Desolation Squads:

...with their big, impressive guns which evoke mixed feelings when it comes to aesthetics.

Eliminators:

Mephiston, Lord of Death:

Sternguard Veterans:

...and the new Terminators:

I also asssembled most of these figures. Which took ages. Especially since GW switched to that very digital approach of having no posability what so ever (remember when that was a selling point in plastics?) and you gotta be careful. The quality is great of course, no questions there. The new terminators I was curious about. Funny thing is that they're not as huge as I thought they would be. I mean compared to the 1st/2nd edition Ultramarines Terminators I did last summer they're still huge, but compared to other Primaris Marines they aren't all that big. A little less tall than the Heavy Intercessors for instance. Otherwise they bascially look the same as they did for the past 15 years. Which is perfectly fine. GW are pretty clever about not messing with their iconic designs (apart from Space Marines in power armour).

So yeah, that's that. Hope you like the units.

Also - here's a picture of Battlemechs. Yeeeeah, I got to paint Battletech figures. Like the cool guys. I know woefully little about Battletech, but I do know that I like it.

Also, I did a review and test game of Dragon Rampant, (also covering Lion Rampant, because it's the same thing essentially):

https://tabletopstories.net/language/en/2024/02/dragon-rampant-review-and-test-game/

I also got Xenos Rampant, the sci-fi variant of Dragon Rampant on the table for a test game. Review, test game, pictures, pewpew. Hope you find the article useful!
