@ TheHappy: If I am right vsurma's list would look like approx
2x Carnifex 85 Synch (!) Devourer 10 Synch (!) Devourer 10 Better BS 8 -------------- 2x 113
2x Tyrant 75 Synch (!) Devourer 12 Synch (!) Devourer 12 Strength upg. 12 -------------- 2x 111
Which totals to 448 Points (hmkay, screw one BS upgrade to get a legal 500 Pts list, but I took it simple for the following numbers!).
Starcannon will hit 2 times, wound 1, thats 4 rounds for each fex, you're right. On the other hand, 8 Shots per Fex at S6 synch shooting, sync wounding means 6 hits each shooting phase, 11/36 wounding per hit => 66/36 x 1/3 (save) = 22/36 = 11/18 or (almost) 2/3rd actual wound-loss per wraithlord per fex per round, leading to approx 5 Rounds for a fex to take on a Phantom lord. But thats's the fex alone. The hive tyrant is about to fire 12 shots @ same stats against a wraithl, so takes 16.5/18 wounds a turn from him! Calced together thats 9 + 9 + 6 + 4.4x (BS 2 Fex) = roughly 28 hits per turn, roughly 308/36 = 8.5 saves to take, so almost one full wraithlord per turn against 3/4 of a fex/tyrant per turn (asuming it's 3 Starcannons!!), all fractions rounded down to suit the eldar. Really could be a close one after all imho...

I count tyrants hitting 9 times each and fexs 6 times, so 18+12=30 hits a turn.
6s to wound means 5 wounds + rerolls maens another 4 wounds.
That is exactly 9 saves a turn.
3 starcannons=6 hits, 3 wounds at turn.
So once in shooting range the eldar are losing a wraithlord a turn while the nids are losing only 3 wounds of a 4 wound TMC. Not to mention we have 4 shooters while they have only 3 so we will last longer.
Course the eldar have superior range so if there is no mission you are forced to hide and take a tie. In most missions if you chose you can take a tie, weak as the eldar weapons are you can always move the woudned TMCs behind the full wound ones.
But once there are missions (as there where at the tourny I was in) you are forced between taking a tie or the eldar getting into the tyranid gun range on turn 2.
Like I said, not much beats the eldar 3 wraithlord, avatar 16 guardians list. If something does chances are its these tyranids.
At the tournament I was at we had a good 24 players, my mate played the above eldar army and managed 20/0 against every other army he played except my tyranids.
I myself played 5/7 of my games against eldar. first one was 3 WL, farseer and guardians killed them to the last man. Next was ulthwe seercouncil + 16 guardians, managed a 15/5 against them iirc. Ah I cannot remember, though I played my mate 2 times.
Still I did not have the optimal eldar killing list, I actually went with a winged tyrant, shooty tyrant and 1 shootyfex (all with devs) and 2 ravs, hardly optimal as the winged tyrant does little against Wraithlords.

Yeah, but the avatar advances so you have to choose between killing the WLs and stopping their shooting and letting the Avatar get to you. Then there is range.
That list is nastier than I thought. Crazy WLs

so yea, now we're using combat patrol rules from the bbb, and i need some clarification. See, i've misplaced my craftworld eldar book, so can anyone who has one look up to see if rangers still count as troop choices for biel-tan? and if not, what choice are they now? and ALSO, what are my new troop choices, besides the obvious banshees, scorpions, reapers, dragons and avengers..
