So my Hivefleet yakface progresses at a staggeringly slow rate.

I finished a few more models last year and I thought I'd finally post them up.

First off, I finished painting the third Warrior for my Warrior unit. He's got his legs slightly converted to be perched up on a rock (click on the pics to see larger versions in the gallery):

Here's a pic of the full squad of 3 now:

Next up I finished the 3rd member of my Ravener squad. I only had 2 of them in 4th edition run as separate 1-man squads, but now that I have to take 3 for a squad I bought some of the new plastics. The new Raveners are quite a bit bigger that the originals, so I used the one 'popping up' out of the ground to minimize this discrepancy in the squad:

And the full squad of Raveners now:

Finally, I finished a Zoanthrope. The first of several I will hopefully finish at some point. I am very pleased with how he came out, especially the orange on the carapace:

And that's it. Who knows when I'll get any more models done, but what I really want to do next is add another Zoey or two, add a unit of 2-3 Hiveguard, add a unit of 1-2 Venomthropes and definitely get 10 Termagants painted.

Comments and Criticisms are always welcome!

I've always been so impressed by your "mini hivefleet" and the standard of painting on it... while also wishing that it would progress as a slightly faster pace

Here's to the excellent new additions! Also, you're right on that the carapace on the zoanthrope is fantastic

Well here's the hope:

I moved into a new house in November 2009, and in this last year I've had absolutely no dedicated painting space...well, I actually never had any dedicated painting space when I lived in my apartment either, but then I was living alone so if I wanted to have my desk covered in paints for 3 months in a row, then this wasn't a problem. But now that I'm sharing an office with my fiance, it becomes a little more problematic to leave paints and models lying around for months.

Anyway, I have an nice big garage waiting to be turned into a painting palace, but it was all hinging on me buying a new desk for the office so that I could move my old beat-up desk into the garage to be my official painting station.

Long story short, I purchased a new desk last weekend from Ikea (I know...its sad to purchase furniture from Ikea, but the expensive stuff is reserved for the living and entry areas for now) and I'll be assembling it tomorrow.

That means very shortly I should finally have my dedicated painting station set up in my garage and then hopefully I will start to get a bit more stuff painted...this painting style takes way too long for things to ever start rolling out at a steady pace, but I should be able to pump out way more stuff than I have been.

So here's hoping!

Of course, standing in my way is also my desire to start a 'quick paint' Daemon army using some sort of washing method...but maybe I should just pay someone to do that for me and focus on my nids instead?

Indeed they are. Never thought about it before. Although when I started painting the hivefleet the goal was to be blue and red (just reversed from GW's typical scheme)...but somehow along the way my highlights started getting more and more prominent and at this point its definitely more of an orange than a red.

Well, I know what I'm voting for! (and it ain't the daemons )

I would be interested in hearing about your success with the painting station outside the main part of the house. We recently moved into a new house with a basement, and I quickly claimed space for painting. However, I've found that it never works for me to spend the large amounts of time necessary to paint down there... and have just worked out an "agreement" to have a small corner of the 1st floor for painting where I won't be as isolated from my significant other.

Either way, looking forward to your being able to make some more painting progress! And I think your next models sound like the right ones to add, too.

I'm with RiTides. These guys look sweet, as the older guys have looked sweet, and I can't wait to see the whole army finished.

Hello Yakface. I really like the look of the 3 raveners together, it appears you've put alot of thought into how they would look as a unit. I also like the thuggish menace embodied in your first rending warrior. The paintjobs are great also will defo have a peek at your gallery.

Great additions Yak. Amazing brushwork as always.
These will fit in great with the rest of your bugs. Curious as to the weapon choices on the warriors though... Tryin to keep them lean and clean? Or are there more devious builds for the rest of the possible unit?

Great job so far man, very vivid and well painted!

Were I to say one thing though, I feel the bases are letting them down a bit. It's not a matter of execution as they are clean and appropriate, but I think the colors are a bit too dull. They almost don't look like the same style as the minis themselves if you know what I mean? The minis are at day and the bases at night if that makes sense-

IMHO, a desert scheme would really make them pop and give the impression of bright skies. Alternately keeping the same pallette as you already have (I'm sure you arent looking to rebase everything you already have) , just some brighter green foliage here and there would provide a reason to look away from the minis themselves for a brief moment.

Again, despite the lengthy suggestion, great job!

I'm definitely more of a base 'minimalist' for the most part, although I can't entirely deny that it probably stems from a desire not to have do too much additional work on the base after. However, I am pretty happy with the 'clean' look of the bases...I admit that it doesn't much look like they're in the middle of chopping people up, but I just wanted kind of pristine sort of look for the army. That, and there's certainly no way I'm going back and changing the existing bases, although if you have any specific suggestions I could certainly try to work it into the existing basing scheme on future models I do.

And thanks for all the kind words everyone!

These guys look really great! I love the blue/orange look you have going here. Don't feel bad about the bases; I use un-painted model railroad ballast and grass for mine.

I have to admit though, I was disappointed when I looked in here and saw Warriors and a Zoanthrope; from the thread title, I was expecting some sweet BFG ships !

Sorry about the confusion...it refers to my overall army profile name.

As for how I paint them, the answer is lots and lots of layers.

And in fact, with the Winged Tyrant I linked to, I was going with a much more 'red' carapace that I just edged with orange. Since then I've started highlighting the orange all the way out, which ends up making the carapace look more orange than red now...so the Hive Tyrant almost doesn't quite match anymore. So in the case of the Zoey, in particular, I did a few more steps on the carapace then are listed in the Hive Tyrant tutorial doing more subtle red to orange highlight layers.
