Looks like sound advice all-round guys, especially regarding the vets. Thanks.

Only changes to H.B.M.C's list I can justify would be to drop the hb spons on a lemun and give it smoke, it's the one that pushes enemy deployment back. Keep one searchlight on another, and I can now get my power weapons (a better use of 10pts is welcome).

That looks much better. For a bit more offensive punch, I might suggest the following:

Drop the sponsons from the russes (lets face it, you'll be shooting the battle cannon anyway): 30

Drop the honorifica from the JO, downgrade your CO to a JO and give him the honorifica: 30

Drop all of the extras from your russes: 9

Drop ID from both of your JOs: 10

That gives you 79 points-enough to give both of your command squads 4 special weapons and drop in to kill something. I'd recomend plasma, but you could get away with doing one of each. Or you could put flamers in one or both and put something else back in (HB sponsons being the only ones worth it).

Other thing: I'd rather have 2 hellhounds than six missile launchers.

"Drop ID from both of your JOs: 10"

No! Never! Horrible! Bad! Hyperbole!

ID is vital. It is not a droppable item. You want 10 points, you drop Sharpshooters or something like that. Not the most mandatory Doctrine in the Codex.

Hmm...HBMC, we may be operating in different worlds. I, quite frankly, see no point in giving suicide dropping command squads 5 points of leadership boostage that your line squads will be able to use once a game, at most.

Premise 1) the command squads get short ranged powerful special weapons

Premise 2) the command squads deepstrike to use those guns

Premise 3) your opponent is not an idiot and shoots the bejesus out of the command squads killing them the turn after they show up.

I fail to see any point where the ID could be useful, aside from an alpha mission, and even then, it would only be so-so. Am I overlooking something?

cheers

Who said anything about Suicide Command Squads? Oh... you did. Well, it'd be a bad idea to use all your non-CHQ Command Sections as suicide units. Usually if I bring 2-3 Command Sections (not including the CHQ) I'll make 1 of them a Suicide Unit.

But for his army he needs redundancy, so you need more than a single unit providing Leadership.

Does guard need a unit to push back enemy infiltrators?

I'm thinking of having a suicide command unit. It's got 3 flamers and light infantry, and is taken specifically to sit in a 12" line to push back enemy infiltrators if I need them. I'm not sure how much enemy infiltrators hurt guard, and if it's worth the 5pts (10pts for light infantry, minus 5pts as ID is no help to a suicide command unit). I'm also not sure if the flamers are a good idea, my thinking is that most of the time I won't need them to push back enemy infiltrators, so they infiltrate safely with flamers, or even deep strike.

New list:

Command - HSO, standard, ID 86
6 IG - 3 las, light infantry 120
6 IG - 3 las, light infantry 120
5 Vets - 3 meltaguns 75
5 Vets - 3 meltaguns 75
Command - JO, 3 flamers, light infantry 68
10 IG - las, plas 95
10 IG - las, plas 95
Command - HIJO, ID 70
10 IG - las, plas 95
10 IG - las, plas 95
5 RR - vet, HL 61
LRBT 145
LRBT - armour 150
