So for years i have been working on a deathgaurd army. I am a full time student who also has a job and three other armies so things have been progressing slowly for the last five years. I love to convert stuff and have found that competative gaming is really turning me off from the play aspect of the hobby as a whole. Since i am not rich enough to just run out and buy models whenever i need to be able to upgrade to the newest edgiest net list available, i decieded to check out from game play for a while and just work on building up an army that looks good and that i enjoy from a visual and fluff perspective.
what follows will be my DG conversions as well as sporadic pics of stuff that i have already assembled and painted. I do not paint the glowing green style of nurgle, instead i have been painting what amounts to the formal Deathgaurd legion paint scheme with the exception of the white on the helms. This is plauge fleet Est. so this minor deviation is fleet specific.
since i dont have much money most of what you see pictured here i won in tournaments over the last five years. yep. thats how long i have been at this particular army. Right now i am working on some terminator. didnt have the legs so i am converting them out of old blackreach stuff. and so it begins.
this is always the scariest part of any conversion when the big clippers come out.
[/img]
here are most of the legs, minus the seals of the false emperor
[img]
haveing done some initial GS work. there is a lot more to do with pin vice drill etc.
this is one of the more or less finished termis. I converted his combi melta and the crows beak/scythe he is swinging. legs are from real termis i won in a tourni not long ago.
[/img]
as well as a pic of the same crows beak weilding termi with the Nurgle Icon bearer who weilds a Combi Heavy flamer, powerfist i converted up for him. Note. The Icon bearer is rocked back in this picture on his base, i repositioned him so he is forward and now looks way better.
here is the blackreach dread i converted to be DG. it had a melta but in my current list the melta is pretty scary as it could vap. my landraider or a plauge marine easily. so i converted up this ML instead.
[/img]
and finally a little bling... showing a slightly photoshopped pic of my dread from the front facing down a mouthy imperial git... One of my own i might add.

I'm impressed with the GS work-it's smooth and convincing as all hell. And big ups for school, work and the hobby. I'm on my way to starting an Eldar Army as well, so we'll see how that goes!

More pics please!

I just figured out that the legs that come with the blackreach set are ever so slightly smaller and shorter than the GW ones. Hmmm. what to do. i am of the mind to either give up now while i am ahead (herasy) or to forge onward (maybe stupidity). one solution is to glue on lots of bling and to use GS to add a tiny bit of hight to their boots ala shoes for short people.
Answers dakka .... i need answers. where are you poeple...

Nice. I really like death guard-the possibilities are endless!

Looks good!

here are a few update pics. since the legs really are about 3mm shorter than the standard, i am going to add a thin sole to the bottom of the boot as well as a spacer inside the the joint between the torso and the hips.
This just shows the detail i am trying to put on some of the legs. Plauge censure's. I wish i had thought to put these on the others but, such is life.
[/img]
I am not sure if these legs are bulky enough up by the knees but its going to be a big task to resculpt them with the larger style knee plates that traditional chaos termis have...
this is another shot of another view of a third set of legs

i am pretty happy with them overall but the Knees being slightly less bulky, what do you think dakka.

Looks cool.

As far as bulky knees go though, I would say that it depends upon what's happening on top.

You need to make sure you are building them in context with what you have to put up the top.

Cheers

I have forge world bits that i am planning on hooking them up with. I did a minor resculpt on the Nurgle terminator srgnts head, giving him a bit of a horn growing out of his head. That way none of my sargents looks the same. I think i have figured out some of my dilema with the size of the legs. they had seemed like they were to small, but ... though they are shorter that is pretty easy to fix. By sculpting their boot soles a little thicker i have given them the necessary height. So... Progress.
Still to come.
10 lesser demons. I am still torn between just buying the command and regular packs of the plauge bearers, or doing a resculpt of zombie gaurdsman.
Landraider
5 more plaugemarines as well as 4 with alternative weapons. Namely melta and flamer since my current list has 4 plasmaguns.
Superheavy...
all i really have to do is a few minor touches around his leg armor, and his sheild. His other leg greave fell off, but i have since found it and reattatched it. I just havent been inspired. this latest push should be motivation enough.

Ok,. done with classes for now. just a quick update on the legs. I finished with the GS and assembly of the termis. they pretty much match the other five that i already have and am in the process of painting except that this unit has a heavy flamer and 2 combi flamers, chain fist and powerfist, where as the other unit has combi melta but the same weapons loadout otherwise. I had to convert the combi flamer and one chainfist out of imperial bits. THe combi flamer turned out well. im really happy with it. they are pictured in some ruins i have been working on for a stalingrad style muddy city ruin set i have been working on. I have tons of terrrain but finally decieded on a theme. the rest of my stuff is just going to get passed on to someone else. Hope you enjoy.
BTW. the spikes were easy to sculpt but the plauge censure on the legs were a headache.

Just a periodic update. I am including some pics of the stuff that i have already finished for the army.
the rhino i won a local painting contest with which gave me a big boost motivation wise to continue plugging away at this. i think i used the cash from the win to buy a land raider that i still have to assemble.

The greater demon was my first full sculpt for 40k. I have some other crummy pictures of it in my profile but this is a way better pic of it. I was shooting to make it look like a smaller version of the greater unclean one. it turned out pretty well. i was happy with the result. Now having seen some of the conversions that people have made with their LOTR trolls i am thinking that in the near future i might resculpt the three trolls that i scupted long ago for my LOTR goblin army and make them demons....

Ok. so you all have sort of voted. Two people liked the Daemon Prince so i will finish GS'ing him and adding the last little bits so he will be done in a week or two. that will end my longest stretch at procrastination ever for me and a model. he has been on my shelf for probably a year and half. almost done the whole time. so It is next. BTW i am trying to think of a good name for him. I was thinking Syphalis.

@ Tallmanitm Thanks. he is one of my favorites too. I just mounted him up on a base with a nurgling hanging out right behind his legs. there are three termis with nurglings on the bases.
Ok. Just time for a quick update.
I have been painting the first of five nurgle termis that i already constructed on regular chaos termi legs, so here are a couple pics of the Sgt. nearly completed painting wise. I just need to seal it with matt coat and give it a little more detail work and he is done. Wheeew.
also after much debate mentally i began greenstuffing the interior of my land raider. Drilled millions of holes as well to complete the multilayered decay look. No landraider would be complete without a full resculpt of the exhaust stacks at the back of the vehicle so i cut those off with a hot knife and then scraped off much of the grill on the assault ramp, prior to Greenstuffing a set of huge teeth on the front. Thats gonna help set the whole model apart from the rest. I am also going to string some cables down from the engin and have them hanging around on the inside of the hull. I thought about GS. spikes coming up through the floor but ... what a pain in the butt GS the texture of the floor into peeling back plating would be so i figured i already have enough on my plate for now.
Lastly... i went ahead and bought 5 plaugebearers and the plaugebearer command box to use as lesser demons so i wont have to rely entirely on plaugemarines for troops. the plan is to drive a unit of 7 plaugemarines in the raider strait into my enemies teeth. then deepstike typhus and 10 termis, 10 lesser demons and a greater demon into the enemy lines. if anything it will be fun.

Nice work on that stuff. One critisique if i may. Your srg. has a big mold line down the top of his gun. Are you going to scrape it off? Other than that i would say big props on you work. cant wait to see more.

Cool - I like the rich earthy tone on the sarge - sweet.

Glad you got rid of the mold line too - my 14 YO son asked me why I hated mold lines so much the other day!

Great to see the effort going into the interior of the LR too.

So i finally am done with school (enough) that i can work on my Nurgle army. There is a 700 pt tourni coming up that i am going to play my deathgaurd in for their first official time in a game EVER. Yep thats right i have only played them one other time and that was as part of a Apoc battle where i was using a lot of borrowed figs. THis tourni will be their official debut. SO in order to field them i needed to have my demon prince painted enough to field as he will be leading my army.
