Tell me what you like about the game compared to others. Is scale a pro or con? I am interested in the game though i think that it might not attract my group. any ideas?

I find most people like the scale for two reasons painting is fast and easy lots of dry brushing if you ever have painted BFG Ships you'll know what I mean.Next
the size on the table provides a more tactical came ,deployment and manuvering
are a lot more important than 40K some have likened it to the differance between chess and checkers. There is alot more to army building than you see at first glance
once you start doing a little researce .And the price cant be beat,a german 1500 point army box deal is $150.00 thats hard to do with any other games.
If any one in your group enjoys watching the history channel ,military channel ext ext that me be a good intention they will like the game the basic game mechanics are move shoot assalt so most people know how that works. And dont forget to ask more questions at the FOW web site www.flamesofwar.com the forum has a newbie section they are very very heplful and would never make you feel small for asking any question.they really are a great group of people when you got questions or even just chating. Also check out "boot camp" for a example of a game. Hope this helps some and keep us informed on your decicion to join the world of FOW.

Hi Ceral:

I had a good post on the old Dakka called from 40k to FOW in 14 days.  (the time between our 40k league and the FOW league).  It got lost.  I'll try to recap for you.  I love both games.  I really like 40k and always will.  And I really like FOW.  Here is what I like:

1.  When you build an army list from your head to the table in FOW it is very playable.  You do not have to worry about building a "Ravenwingesq" type of army that would be hard to play and you get your butt kicked all day. In FOW just pick up the codex of your choice and play.  There are a lot of choices dont be afraid of German vs. US type of thing.  First there are tons of codexes.  Also, in each codex there are lots of choices.  I.e.  In US you can play Infantry, Tank Co, Armoured Infantry, Rangers, and Parachute Co.  All different armies.

2.  The learning curve of the game is easier than 40k IMO.  In 40k one needs game time to learn how boyz with choppas do against termies, how IG fare against Swooping Hawks, etc....   In Fow it is more intuitive.  One knows from life that you use your machine guns to mow down infantry and your tank guns to kill tanks.  So you can get right into real battles right away without learning codex vs. codex.

3.  Due to the smaller size, the board is "bigger" and thus the tactical choices are more.  Also some games dont have turn limits thus different tactics.  You can do real flank manourvers and other military tacitcs you read and see on T.V.  That's pretty cool.

4.  The imagery in ones mind is fun too, very Saving Private Ryan or the Dirty Dozen or whatever WWII cinema is in your head.

5.  The small size, at first I thought I would hate it.  But you get used to it really quickly.  Painting is easier and yet there is a lot of detail on those small buggers that you can paint 'em like necrons or spend a lot of time picking out detail which will get noticed by your game group.

All in all  I recommend it its a good other game to 40K and offers a lot.

Okay, I have some questions.

I've noticed that units are divided into early, middle, and late war. Does that matter in the game, or are you expected to make an army for each category?

Also, what is Sting of the Scorpion? Is it a playable force, some kind of mini-game, or something else?

Ok:

I have no idea what the Sting of the Scorpion is. To me it sounds like a cool kung fu move.

As to early, middle, and late war.  Again not an expert, but I believe it has to do with actual historical accuracy.  For example, in my U.S. Tank Co. list the first tank avail. might be the 3AIStuart, but middle war had the 5A1Stuart.  (I am making up the markings and field options - I dont have my codex.)  In game the 3A1Stuart might have not have had a turret AA MG, but the 5A1 Stuart does.  So to purest who are playing early war they would only field the earlier type of Stuart Light Tank.  But in my game group we just play whatever list we want that is printed regardless of the time period.  Does that make sense?

Early Middle and Late war are the seperation of the time periods, Its divided as Early: 1939-41 Mid: 1942-43 Late: 1944-45. When you make your army you have to decide which period to play in as the lists are balanced for each period, such as a Late war Panzer company will eat a mid war U.S. Company just because more heavier tanks are available and cheaper in that period . Currently the standard is Mid War, all the army books out are for Mid War so thats what almost everyone plays. Battlefront said that next will be latewar which should come out sometime in 2006.

Sting of the Scorpion is a box set for Raid missions. It and Who Dares wins represent the Long Range Desert Group(LRDG) and the Special Air Service (SAS). Basically there small light raiding forces used for quicker paced Flames of War games. The bigger of the two boxes comes with the rules which are also recently available on BF site. They basically have the British Guys in light trucks pitted against an Italian or German force twice there size and their objective is to sabotage something or just deal alot of damage then speed off. I found they make for fun games when your looking for something faster paced.

Hope That Helps,
Josh
