Got introduced to the table top game by a friend a little over two months ago and got totally addicted. Last month I started collecting/painting my first miniatures. This is my progress so far (after reading and watching hours of tutorials). I call them the Black Cats because I have absolutely no luck when it comes to my rolls. Critique and criticizes are welcome.

Thanks all!

I painted the white areas solid white first by working my way up in shades first. The base coat is black, next layer is 50/50 chaos black/codex gray mix, then codex grey and finally skull white. When I get a nice solid (or close to soild) white I wash everything with badab black and let it dry and finally dry brush with skull white.

I wanted a dirty look to my white.

I've seen a few of them by people with unlucky rolls.

Very nice! I wish my models were that good... anyway, like has been said, the shoulber-pad-white is a little blotchy, and above the powerfist needs touched up (near the arm).

I have seen the models you are talking about and defiantly want to try and make my own some time. I find my bad luck something to embrace, it has made for some hilarious games.

Thanks for the pointers. I have had trouble with the white areas in particular. I thin my paints till it is too thin and it does not cover well enough (even after like 3-4 layers) or I apply it too thick and get very bad brush marks. Defiantly an area I am still trying to improve on.

Thanks! My very first army and miniatures. I spent about two days reading and watching tutorials before I picked up a paint brush.

For your first army, its really good. Judging by your work, it looks like you've had experience with other models.

When I was a kid and up into my early teens I was really into building model airplanes. The last one I built was an A-10 Thunderbolt about 13 years ago. Won me second place in a contest I entered . Forgot how much I loved building and painting models. Plus the best thing about this is I get to play with the models after i'm done .

Great stuff! Look through the P&M blogs of some of the better painters on the forum and ask them questions about how they do their painting. A lot can be learned that way.

Thanks! I had the most fun painting the dread. I got into space marines because the dread is my favorite model. I watched a few videos on weathering and battle damage and kinda ended up trying just about all the techniques on it. I'm very happy with the way it turned out.

Bonegrinder wrote:Not bad at all, like the eyes alot.

I got the colour schemes from a Raven Guard terminator on cool mini or not. The eyes on that model really sold me on the colour scheme.

Surfboard66 wrote:To be honest I cant believe those are you first models.

Well I must be doing something right then . As I said earlier I use to really be into building and painting model planes when I was a lot younger. I would recommend anyone starting out like I have, to watch and read as many tutorials as they can. They made all the difference when it came to painting my army (and take to take their time).

Could I get a close-up of the scrawl on the knee-pads? I want to see your brush pattern. I'd like to incorporate it into my marines as well.

Paint consistency is one of those things that just seems to come with time. It's dead easy to tell when it's right, but God help the newbie trying to get there, consistently. It's even worse when you use a variety of paints that all act differently, brand to brand and even color to color (I'm looking at you, VGC Gory Red and Bone White!). I don't paint much, but I've got a bit of experience and TONS of Dakka advice on my side and I still feel like I'm fighting my paints, every now and again. Best method I've found is to lay a few drops of water on the palette near your paints and drag them together, bit by bit, as needed. When I tried to thin everything at once, I found that one drop/brushload of water was never the right amount. Thinning a few brushloads at a time gives you better control when working with smaller amounts of paint. If you're basecoating, assembly-line style, you might be better served with a bigger batch thinned at once in a welled palette.

Ya thinning paints is a fight, and experience is invaluable when trying to get it done correctly. Even after a handful of years in the hobby when I do finally get that right consistency I'll keep going until that bit of paint is gone because God only knows when I'll get it right again.
