So what do you think? This list has infantry, HMGs, mortars, medium AT, armor, and recce. The only thing it really lacks is anti-aircraft (or air support.) I probably won't be playing with people who use air support anyway. If I run up against people with a lot of air support, I can downgrade the Panzer IV F2's to F1's and take come Sd Kfz 10/5 (2cm) anti-aircraft guns. The F1's could also provide arty in a pinch.

I'm going for both historicalness and effectiveness.

So is this list historical and effective? Any and all comments welcome.

I assume those PzGrenadier squads motorized? Looks like a good solid list with a balance of infantry, supporting guns and armor. You will, however, run into problems if your opponents spring a bunch of Matilda's on you, in which case you'll need to get side/rear shots on them. Just know in advance that playing Germans, you're going to be outnumbered and they're not very forgiving of any mistakes you make. It is a good list though.

As to historical, don't sweat that. This list is close enough, and about as historical as you can get in FoW. The particular list conventions they list allow a litte too much weapons & support elements than was used historically, but it allows everyone to play a good company level game with lots of greeblies. What's generally missing is there's too little infantry, but everyone is usuing the same list conventions, so it doesn't really matter. It's kinda like everyone gets to kamfgruppe the historical armies (with the Germans getting to double dip!). All good fun, and still capable of producing historical results.

If you want to get really historical, a typical TO&E of a Panzer infantry battalion would have three infantry companies (each with two to three infantry platoons and an organic MMG platoon), a machine gun company (two MMG platoons and a 8cm mortar platoon), and a Heavy Company (with an engineer platoon, an AT platoon w/either Pak 38's or the super poopy 3.7cm Pak 36, and a 7.5cm infantry gun platoon). All with organic transport, be it Opel Blitz, Kfz 70's, Krupp trucks or even British Quads. Gerry cared not what he rode in, so long as it worked. Things like armor, artillery, AAA, and recon would be allocated by division comand.

This is what I learned playing Command Decision 3!

Yes Nyarly, the panzergrenadiers are indeed motorized.

Do you think my lack of air support/anti-air and extremely high AT (I'm talking 88s) will be too big of a problem?  Someone over on Battlefront's website recommended dropping the HMGs in place of some Sd Kfz 10/5 (2cm) anti-aircraft half-tracks, for a dual purpose anti-infantry/anti-air role.  However, I'm not sold on this idea because those are soft-skinned vehicles - If push comes to shove they won't be nearly as survivable as HMG infantry teams.

And as to the infantry, in a 2000 point list, I would definately add another panzergrenadier platoon, and maybe pioneers as well.  I'll see how this plays, and perhaps even up it to three panzergrenadier platoons in a 1500 point list.

Nah, I think your fine for the time being. Do pick up some SdKfz 10/5's or even SdKfz 7/1's (quad 2cms and absolutely devestating vs infantry) just in case you find out it's popular with the locals. I say that as a lot of folks skip taking air power due to it's high unpredicatability and sometimes deadly consequences on their own armies (the friendly fire bit). It's also not cheap, and those points are often better spent on something more concrete and predicatble (like arty). On the flip side, it is a good way to round out a 2000pt army when you don't quite yet have enough figures to otherwise do so (it's not necessary to model air support, though I use a few Model Power Stukas & BF109's).
