Hi all,

I have just posted an article on how to create your own real cloth banners (with pics!) on my blog.

Check it out if you're interested -> Rebuilding Angmar

Enjoy!

Definately needs cloth with a higher thread count ? the denim looks like woven wool at this scale ? but too fine and you lose the texture. Trade-offs, trade-offs....

Try atheletic tape. Makes good banners and you can see the fibres too.

Orks are like those neighbor children who aren't invited to your parties and they come right in anyway.

hmmm i think cloth is very course material to work on. I per fer green stuff for banners you can make some really cool effects, especially a wind blown effects, and its a preet stable surface as we all know to paint on. Perhaps i will post some results on here when i finish my spartan themed space marine army.

Yea, I know what you mean about the thread count. But this was just my first attempt!

Ah Ha! That would work just as well, if not better. Should be the same process though.

Cloth will still be less prone to damage. Unless you go at mine with scissors, they will not tear no matter how hard you abuse them.

Plus, you get to relish in your army's apparent financial superiority, as they could afford cloth banners while your opponents had to settle for lowly paper ones!

If you want a really high thread count, you could always just chop up the zillion-count Egyptian cotton sheets that you (read: your wife) got as a wedding gift. Don't worry, she won't notice.

Seroiusly nyarlathotep667, you are like soooooo totally "contribed".

Rob-o is entitled to his opinion, just as I am entitled to his mother.

Apparently he did not see the smiley after my comment about paper banners, and took it as a personal attack. No problem, we all must be tolerant of our selectively-blind younger brethren. At least he posted images of his own models to show us how to properly do it.

Oh, wait...

Hello, I'm back.

Robo, what does 'contribed' mean? Are you trying to say contrived or are you just as illiterate as you are offensive?

Nice banners. Dumb troll.

It doesn't like like it in the photos, but does the pva/water treatment make them shiny?

No not shiny at all. Also, the thread size is not as apparent in person.

Well [V] and [B] are right next to each other on the keyboard, so maybe in the excitement of launching that zinger at Nyarly, he made the honest mistake of hitting the wrong key. But considering Rob's track record of being thoroughly unlikeable, I'm going to chalk it up to him being a:

Oooh, what's that sound? Must be the gnashing of little robo's teeth. That or his cries of rejection from learning he isn't even a fraction as cool as he thought he was.

I like the banners. Just be glad you didn't dip the minis, you would have suffered the full wrath of Rob"menolikedipping"0362's pre-pubescant rage.

I think that with the right kind of army those banners would look really fantastic. They look to me like very large, crude banners, almost like Ogrish or Orkoid. I'm trying to think what kind of aesthetic these would suit very well. I like the way they look with your Terminators, but less so with the biker. This will require meditation.

Party on, dudes.

 LOL

Yea, I had the same though after the fact. The bike banners did not turn out quite how I envisioned them. I really should have gone with something slimmer and neater for them. I'll try something new as time permits.

I have been toying with an idea from my model airplane days. I used to build wooden rubber band powered planes made of  balsa & coverd w/tissue paper that shrunk & hardened w/ a special paint called "dope". I do know the "dope" can attack plastic. So maybe this is a good time to also ask if anyone has tried this before I do something stupid? I still think those are cool.

Is there a way to make them appear less frayed? I know you want
a battle tested look, but it doesn't scale quite right up close. The
thread count comments might help; I'm not really knowledgeable
on the subject. Perhaps it's the method of cutting? Would trimming
them after cutting help? Or (if you're bold) actually stick the edges of
each banner around a wire frame or rod?

edit: Of course I can do all of NONE of these things.

Depending on the material, you could always carefully singe the edges. Polyester, I think, should melt and seal up the edges. I've never tried it, so don't blame me when your house burns down, but it should work. This is what we used to do back in scouts to seal newly cut ropes. I'm not sure what that rope material was though.

Also, you can always fold the edges over and glue them back, or sew them if you are so inclined. Then the frayed edges will be hidden and the visible edge of the banner will be a crisp fold. Iron it for a precise straight edge.

Trolls are more effective when proper spelling is involved. Anyway, I was planning on using cloth banners in my LatD army. My first thought and experiment is with t-shirt cloth and having it soak in coffee. After the soaking, the cloth has taken on an old look. Chaos stars and Nurgle symbols will be on them.

The Librarian and guy on the right look the best. The bike banner I'm not a fan of, but I do like the fact you've used a marking from the RT days.

I used to make banners using stretchy bandage (from a supermarket, only about 40p), and dip it in PVA or wood glue, then ring it out, and hang it to dry. The first time I did this, I layed it out to dry instead of hanging it on something. It stuck to the kitchen table, and my mum was not happy.
