Hi there everyone! Hope everyone out there is having a great day!
My friend and I have been arguing about this matter for a while, he says Necrons can't ally with other races, I say they can.

Here is my reason:
When the Silent King severed the connection he had with his Lords and Overlords, the Codex says they returned to their original state of mind, and when they awaken, they do things their own way. Some Lords prefer to trade and hoard tech and power until such time as it is needed, while others prefer to rampage and destroy. Is it possible that an Overlord decided that it would be beneficial to ally with another race? The Imperium of Man, Eldar, Tyranids and Tua would of course never ally with them, but Dark Eldar might, and Orks if they take them to a good WWAAAAAAAAAGGGH! and I expect the Necrons could give the orks some nice tech, and I expect Necrons and Chaos can have a good alliance too?
On a side note, can Necron Lords speak to other races? The Codex say that they send Emissarys to other races when they trade, so I think they do?

My friends reason:
They are homicidal killing machines that cannot reason or communicate.

Anyone have this discussion before? Thank you all in advance for your help!

If your friend's argument is that everyone hates everyone in the 40k universe, he's right about that. But that doesn't mean alliances don't happen. According to the Apocalypse book necrons might ally with chaos, dark eldar, or orks, but hate everyone else's guts so much that "you will need a really good story to explain the alliance." The 40k universe is a big place. Anything can happen.

If I recall in the shot battle logs of the necron codex they did ally with Blood Angles to wipe out a 'Nid hive fleet.

Can necrons as a race ally with others, yes. Are they willings only if it gains them.

Your friend is probably thinking in terms of the old necron codex, where they really were good old mindless killing machines. Now that they can think for themselves then it is perfectly feasible.

I still think you would need a really good story for cron-chaos, seeing as Necrons can't stand anything from the warp.

Anyway, I would allow alliances, but usually mine would have some of negative slant. Like the necrons only allying with orks because they are expendable, and as soon as their usefulness is gone, they would immediately be exterrminated.

Well the necrons would not ally with anyone they did not find as a worthy apponent first of all. Except for the elder they would never ally with the eldar due to hatred of them. But i could see them allying with others if it was to their advantage

In 3rd edition Codex, Necrons were just killing machines. With the new Codex, there are ALSO many other options. But as said, only a few ally with others.

Then your Grey Knights are ruined, as there is no Grey Knight book by Dan Abnett

Is it just me, or does it feel like the 40k Universe is so restrictive? In normal Warhammer you can find Dark Elves and Orks being allies, well in the sense that the Ork is a slave to the Dark Elf and he likes him as his favorite pet. Is it because in 40k the universe is so big? Or is it just all the hate everyone has for each other?

Well, every race has a superiority complex of some sort. Imperium of man hate every race that isn't human and even then it's kinda like standing on thin ice with the sun shining. Orks wanna be duh biggest and duh strongest! Crons feel they're the emperor's gift to the universe (see what I did there?) dark eldar are all about me me me pleasure yada yada Chaos is our god's are the best worship praise milk for the khorne flakes eldar have the same mindset as cron imho nids...well nids kinda got to ride the short bus in the thinking department what with the nomnoming and things and are the exception...

Pretty much everyone hates everyone for the bad factor lol wouldn't be fun if you heard HUG KISS LOVE! (Except if you're a brony I suppose....)

Well, the fact that it is so big opens up many possibilities, I think that barring elder you could argue that any race wasn't actually allied to the Necrons but attacking in the same place at the same time, so they could play together

Well I guess that bones me, I wanted to write some fluff of why my Necron army and my friends Ork army was fighting together permanently. Seems it can't be done, sigh, but like Garron said, bromance in the hood would probably make a really big dent in the fluff. I'll probably have to switch to Orks now so that we can play together.

Yeah its almost part of the fun having to use your imagination to explain why two races are on the same side

Your sarcasm is noted totentanzen, but my problem isn't my imagination, my problem is will my fluff be accepted by my peers on this forum.

Just read the new Codex and you will see that there is a slight chance of a coalition.

Ok so you are saying that a good enough story and/or a big pile of fluffy gak could lead to an imperium-xenos alliance against say the nids if they were eating the whole galaxy very fast.

I'd say yes it could happen as proved with the BA/crons vs nids thing above. After that mini-war had benn won (ie nids being exterminated) the other armys would start fighting each other again.
So crons would win because We get knocked down, but we get up again. Recycleable soldiers LOL

With the old Necron Fluff, I would quickly say No.

But with the new redex fluff I would say that it could be plausible depending on which necron dynasty you would be dealing with.

While I do probably prefer the "kill everything" mentality of old, im rolling with the new stuff...
