Subject: First Imperial Guard 1000pts Army List + Report

This is the first 1000pts Imperial Guard list I've ever made, and I tested it out today twice. It won both battles, one was a team battle with Eldar on my side vs. lots of nids, and the other was against Eldar. Below is the list and my input regarding what each unit did and how useful it was, I'm open to suggestions as to what to change to make it better, assuming its past what I already have to say.
Hq –
110pts - Company Command Squad (Grenade Launcher x2, Master of Ordnance, Veteran Weapon Team w/Lascannon)
This unit did fairly well both games and the Master of Ordnance proved to be hilarious and useful at the same time.
85pts – Lord Commissar (Power Fist)
I got this guy strictly for raising leadership thus making orders easier to issue and for raising the Psyker Battle Squads leadership so they won't run off the board when they are inevitably shot at. His power fist proved to be completely useless both games.
Elites –
110pts - Psyker Battle Squad (Five Additional Sanctioned Psykers)
Downright game changer, this unit is unbelievably cheap for the amount of hurt it causes.
65pts – Marbo
I got him because I was told before to get him instead of Ratlings and I did plus he looked fun. Against nids he was killed soon after he showed up, against Eldar he tore up three vehicles and remained alive till end game. Well worth the points he costs.
Troops –
240pts - Infantry Platoon 1
55pts – Command Squad (Grenade Launcher, Weapon Team w/Lascannon)
Nothing to special happened with them, not sure what I would change.
65pts - 1st squad - (Flamer, Weapon Team w/Autocannon)
Flamer was a total waste of points but the autocannon was worth it.
60pts - 2nd squad - (Weapon Team w/Autocannon)
Autocannon was worth it.
60pts – Heavy Weapons Squad (Mortars)
Probably the best point investment I made in this list. Mortars proved to be cheap, annoying, killing machines in both games.
240pts - Infantry Platoon 2
55pts – Command Squad (Grenade Launcher, Weapon Team w/Lascannon)
Same
65pts - 1st squad - (Flamer, Weapon Team w/Autocannon)
Same
60pts - 2nd squad - (Weapon Team w/Autocannon)
Same
60pts – Heavy Weapons Squad (Mortars)
Same
Fast Attack –
105pts – Scout Sentinel Squadron (Multi-laser)
They killed a character, vehicles, and chunks of units. Best part of it was that my opponents laughed at them and ignored them till it was to late.
45pts – Scout Sentinel (Rocket Launcher)
Little walking nightmare, like his brothers he was not seen as any sort of threat till he killed twice his value in points.
Heavy Support –
None
I don't really have any plans for few if any tanks, I will probably just stick to infantry.
Basically what I did was plant myself in the nearest large piece of terrain and create a large gun line with the majority of my forces, then I placed the mortars and sentinels on either end of my flanks a good distance away but still within line of sight. From there I just shoot the hell out of everything. Needless to say this worked till things got to close then I started to lose units but thankfully by the time this happened in both games my opponents army was far to shot to hell to make for much of a assault and I overwhelmed them. Besides general advice for this list I really want to know what I can do in regards to a effective counter assault to stop things from getting to close without me letting them.

You know the LC's aura of discipline doesn't help the PBS in terms of getting off powers right? I wasn't sure what you meant by 'raising their leadership' underneath his entry. If you are using him in a squad, perhaps the camo cloak will be a better investment than the powerfist because it'll give the squad stealth?
If you drop the grenade launchers and flamers from the whole list, and downgrade the lascannons in the two PCS to autocannons, and swap the Lord Commie's Fist for a cloak, you could you afford a small squad of rough riders. You could keep them in reserve and use them as a counter assault unit if you want, they aren't too bad on the charge (the first charge, that is).
Alternatively, find the points to put a commissar in the first infantry squad of each platoon, give him and both sergeants power weapons, and suddenly those 20 men can do damage in close combat as well as at range, as well as taking casualties better since they are grouped?
Edit: Also, is your picture a powerpuff girls thing? I think I remember a red dude with crab hands from that show...

That was poor wording on my part regarding the PBS I'll edit that, what I meant to say was moral wise, since both times my opponent went straight for that unit and it ended either hurt or dead so I wanted to make sure they didn't run off the board with him. Anyway regarding the camo cloak that is probably a good idea but I don't know about using rough riders they seem to "hit and miss" I want something that is fairly cheap that's not just going to get killed after one charge.
And yes my pic is from the powerpuff girls, his name is HIM.

Well the not killed off in one charge thing, best bet is probably running those infantry squads in groups of 20, giving them a commissar, and 3 PWs. Or Ogryns. People say they are rubbish, but Ailiros, a fella on here (I think I spelt it wrong for the 10000000 time) seems to use them to some success in his lists.
Also, who did you have a game against? What kind of lists/players?

I actually have Ogryns and considered using them but I'm having a hard time finding the points for them in a 1k list.

List wise the nids were hording like crazy and had the the doom of malan'tai in a pod (which by the way I find that thing ridiculously powerful for its point cost). And the eldar player had a bunch of jet bikes and other vehicles along with swooping hawks going all over the place.

Well at a thousand points, you are probably going to have to choose between sentinels and counterattacking units. You could drop the sentinels and add a commissar to the first infantry squad of each platoon with a PW and give PWs to all the sergeants. any extra points could go toward another infantry squad to add to the blobs, or maybe meltas/flamers for the PCS (to benefit from the fact they can take 4)? That could work perhaps...I don't have much experience with guard all on foot.

I have a feeling Ogryns will provoke the same laughs from my opponents as the sentinels did and end up being useful. I wonder what would happen if instead of a commissar I get another PCS for anti assault purposes, maybe along with a infantry squad if I drop the sentinels and possibly squeeze a few Ogryns in? Automatically Appended Next Post: On a side note lasguns being used with orders are not as bad as people say they are.
