Subject: 2000 point Tyranid list - Pods and variety, somewhat anti-mech and gunline
This is essentially the list I've been running for the past 4 battles. I don't play a lot of 40K, I'm using a lot of older models from yesteryear as proxies:
1 Swarmlord (or HT w/ armor 2+, lash whip, bonesword and heavy venom cannon, Hive Commander)
The goal has been to make a list that doesn't require Operation Meatshield, that gets into the opponent's deployment area and messes up his game plan. I want everything to get at least one shot at effective combat before dying to pieplates. It is somwhat anti-mech, as I try to drop pods behind Rear Armor 10 vehicles, which they have a fair chance of breaking, and the Doom, Hive Guard and Tyrannofex all work great against armor. The Swarmlord gets 3 or 4 reserves out on turn 2, typically. The genestealers threaten the flanks, the pods threaten the center, and the ymgarl threaten cover. The tervigons keep the most likely targets up with feel no pain, and spawn extra troop squads for claiming/holding objectives.
So far, it has gone 4 for 4 against Marines and two mech IG forces, and a modified 1250 game against Grey Knights (They couldn't get psi working with all the shadows of the warp generators). Here is the last batrep against IG.
My main concerns are that they still don't have enough anti-armor, and only 3 Synapse. I've got a trygon on order, that will surely be played as a prime for the synapse. I am thinking of ditching the hive guard for zoanthropes deployed by a 4th pod, as they give more synapse, can be better anti armor, and throw more shadows of the warp around.

I do too, mostly. Except they survive like nothing else, and I can attack the scariest things on the board from the start of the game with a reasonable chance of success. It has taken out so many nasty weapons; removed the particle whip from the Necron Monolith on Turn 1, Splatted Vendetta to keep their las cannons off my synapse, neutralized Leman Russ several times, taking out a whirlwind on turn 1 . I haven't had him fail me in a game yet, at least, not to the point that I didn't want to take him again. Once he even won it, being essentially immune to what was left on the board and able to burn away the remaining infantry. Strength 10, range 48" is really, really tough, and outside of force weapons (which he should be under the blanket of SotW), he takes a lot of killing. I do think he should be less expensive considering how cheap tanks are, but he just keeps doing good things for me
I have a dream of fielding 3 of them, just to see how they would do.

I hear what you're saying, and I've got to try some, but so much can be fielded with the points......hmm...I mean, that's a unit of 11 TS Genestealers led by a broodlord....12 models, for example.
Ah, I know you know as well as I do. I just haven't been able to justify it yet, barring apoc. I'll try it a couple times, but I like the Trygon more. I run into enough plasma and melta that both go equally fast and the 2+ doesn't mean anything.

And I haven't tried the trygon yet, but I'm sure I will soon It will be great at 2500 points to take both!
At least it is close enough to be worth discussing. That is a lot more than some unit choices can say
Its funny, I have 60+ genestealers, but I rarely pull them all out. They seem to get gunned down a lot when I do. My goal is really to make sure everything gets one chance to do something effective before dying. I'm not even sure I like the swarmlord in that regard, but I love the 2X psychic attacks and the 18" synapse. plus he does terrify people into staying away.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Oh, what is your opinion on Zoanthropes vs. Hive Guard
Automatically Appended Next Post: LOL, then having said that, in today's game my tyrannofex did nothing. Neither did the doom. Of course, it only lasted two turns, but still... I got to see the devourer spam against marines... it was pretty impressive! The list is really flexible; there are lots of opportunities for something to step up!
