Subject: Tervigon Build and The Dragon List (New to Nids)

Hey there Dakka!
I have JUST started playing the Nids and I am new to the Hive Mind. I have bought a BUNCH of models and I need to figure out what to do with them. Heres what I have ordered so far, mind you I have yet to play a game...
3x Tervigons NOS
150x Genestealers (30 NOS)
150x Termigaunts (100 NOS)
60x Gargoyles NOS
20x Ymragl Genestealers
2x Trygons
110x Rippers
2x Hive Tyrants NOS
3x Trygons NOS (soon to be made into Harpies)
I have two things I want to do 1) run the Horde list with the 3 Tervigons and 2) run The Dragon List.
The Dragon List will be one of the most fun lists I can think of. 3 Harpies, 2 Winged Hive Tyrants, 60 Gargoyles and 50x Genestealers for troops to outflank.
If anyone has any ideas on what I can take or how to field these lists, or at least The Dragon list I would be very appreciative.

Dude....I wish I had financial freedom to get into armies like that More genestealers than you can field in a regular game (6 x 20 = 120)....you're basically purchased an Apoc army=) Harpies are rare....inefficient for the points, mainly because they have poor CC abilities. I think you've got a great start sans ranged AT. Mainly hive guard and zoanthropes. I prefer the latter, but I DS them in a pod.....because I'm usually a more "in your face" type of player. Looks like you have enough gants to support the tervigons, provided you start with only groups of 10. You'll want a couple tyrant guard unless the tyrants will always be flyrants....in which case the gargoyle screen you've got covered. Great start man, I haven't done much nids yet, but you'll be off to a good army.

Since you have so many Rippers, I would recomend converting a Parasite of Mortex ( Pom)
A little difficult to use, but definately an asset for a Dragon list! If you can manage
to get that bad boy into melee against a soft target (like a crippled IG platoon or a unit
of Guardians) you can very well carry the day with sheer weight of Ripper Swarms that
can get spawned....though I would not recomend being too aggressive with it in a KP
game, lol! Could also try out a Ripper swarm-themed Deepstriking army, with the numbers
you have; anklebiters glore!
I would caution against a pure 'Stealer flanking list in full strength. After the first or second
game most opponents will counter by physically blocking or choking the flanks, which will
either limit the models that can arrive, or force you to deploy on YOUR flank which defeats
the advantage! Remember that the good ole Pant-thieves can also infiltrate too!
The Ymragl's are great fun, so becareful on what you target with them! They are greatly
capable of smashing alot of different units with only a small pause, but if you wipe
that unit out too soon, the poor guys will get shot up!
The Brood-mother list can be fun, and also very random/tiring. The Tervigons don't
benefit from a coversave with the Termigants screening them (unless you model them
jumping with small flying bases, fyi!) and can easily kill the broods it generates! So play
VERY aggressively with the spawned broods and don't worry about casualties...there
will be TONS and make sure you pack the Gargoyles/Harpies/Flyrants in those lists!
That setup lacks AT and melee punch, big time!
Also...it would have been cheaper and easier to convert your Harpies (and Pom!) from
Ravener models....the Wings from ForgeWorld are fairly cheap and all you have to really
do it is cut up some of the scything talons for the arms to make some decent looking wings!
The carnifex box has some neat extra heads and bits that make them a little more nice looking!
Additionally the Trygons are rather huge models and strategically, making a unit like the Harpy a
little smaller could make it more survivable! Since it could then, theoritically, hide behind terrian
and other models.
I would also recomend on aquiring some Warriors if for nothing else than for the fact you can pack
alot of firepower/endurance into a smallish footprint (and mysetic spore them in!)

Well, I plant to run TWO different lists and keep them seperate in that respect.
The Dragon List
2x FLyrants
3x Harpies
60x Gargoyles
Stealers
The Horde List
110 Rippers
50x Genestealers
100x Guants
Tervigon or two
OR
3-4x Tervigon
100+ Guants
Swarmlord/Tyrant w/o wings
On a side note, I plan to convert my Harpies kinda like these ones.
http://media.photobucket.com/image/tyranid%20harpy/CushionRide/100_0251.jpg
PS: I know its a lot to get all at once, but I want to be able to field ANY list I can think of with respect to their theme. So, naturally I had to follow the path I took that lead me to 17,000pts of Chaos Daemons. This will probably happen with nids by the end of the summer. I gots me an internship.
Hello Gamesworkshop,
please take all my money.=]

Mass stealer list benefits from swarmlord as HQ as you can reroll which side you outflank on. I would recommend some hive guard as well.
In the flying list I find shrikes better than a harpy as they can get a cover save on the way in. Rending claws and they can peel open transports.

Well, with the horde, make sure you're fielding enough MC's to open up some transports and tanks. AG in swarms can do it.....but more reliable methods are preferable. I'd like to see a good POM and ripper swarm list.....but I've never seen people field rippers on Dakka =/

Is this for apocalypse? You can't run 60 gargoyles and 3 harpies in a standard game.
In theory two winged tyrants with hive commander and 60 gargoyles is a pretty formidable rush. The mass of gargoyle wings should be able to provide the 50% cover needed to get a cover save on the tyrants. I know people theorized such a list but never heard of it being ran. Could be quite fun.
Good support units are the ever ubiquitous hive guard and tervigons, both of which really compliment the rush you'll have going on. Stealers of both varieties could come in handy also.

So why can't I take 60 gargoyles and 3 harpies. Arent harpIes heavy support and gargoyles fast attack? Automatically Appended Next Post: Whats the Max amount of guants you can field and still have 2 Tervigons?

Sounds like you need a codex
--Harpies are fast attack, as are gargoyles.

Actually, he ordered 150 stealers and 20 Ymgarl....so yeah, it's more than he can field=) Concerning the Parasite, it's an IC shrike, with implant attack(ID on a roll of 6 to wound). Its main two abilities are: Every model it removes in CC must make a toughness check. It it fails, the POM spawns 1d6 ripper swarms. In addition, every infantry and jump infantry that outflanks has to choose a model and make the toughnes check or lose the model and spawn 1d6 ripper swarms=)

I would wait until 6th ed hits before I decide on which list I want to build and which biomorphs to model.
Until then I would assemble 60 Genestealers and 10-20 Ymgarls, can't really go wrong there.

Lol yeah. But sadly there is no set date for 6th Ed. So I'm going to have to play with these guys. I know it's a bit "much" for a starter list but when you have piles of disposable income and sisters of battle to trade for nids, it adds up REAL fast. For 200$ on eBay I got 104 genestealers 110 rippers, some IC and a few other bits and bobs. It's upsetting but at the same time, fielding a few hundred genestealers can be a challenge for any opponent.
The horde list will do very well but the dragon list will need to get some kinks worked out. This why I'm here. I need you nod players to help me field a dragon list that can do well and will have at least 80% flying/ fast units.

I wouldn't even dream of taking Harpies if I was you. They are T5 4+ armour and things like autocannons, heavy bolters, psycannons etc will deck them pretty easily. If a demolisher cannon hits them then forget about it.

That looks like a solid competitive list but I'm looking for themed. IE dragons.
So if ya have a list ya can do that's just flying then I'd take the everytime. The horde list I've got down. It'll be 100 guants and 5 tervigons. They can't kill them fast enough lol

Unfortunately I don’t think you can build a competitive flying MC army at this point, at all – the new Flyrant model (and the Harpies in your link) can’t get cover saves from Gargoyles. Unless you put wings on a walking Tyrant of course. This means that you will lose 2 flying monsters per turn against many shooting armies, basically. But if you can’t wait for 6th ed (which should hit the shelves in july):
Flyrant – Old Adversary, 2xScything Talons, Wings, Leech Essence, Paroxysm
Flyrant – Old Adversary, 2xScything Talons, Wings, Leech Essence, Paroxysm
2 Hive Guards
2 Hive Guards
2 Venomthropes
8 Genestealers plus a Broodlord
8 Genestealers plus a Broodlord
10 Termagants
Tervigon – Toxin Sacs, Catalyst, Cluster Spines
30 Gargoyles – Adrenal Glands, Toxin Sacs
Harpy - Twinlinked Heavy Venom Cannon, Cluster Spines
Harpy - Twinlinked Heavy Venom Cannon, Cluster Spines
1999 points
67 models
12 kill points
Flyrants get double Talons to reroll hits against moving vehicles, and AG to help popping Landraiders and Dreadnoughts. Take two of them with the same setup because of the theme and the fact that they are so easy to kill.
Genestealers should be infiltrated in most games to help with the aggressive, fast playstyle of the list. The Broodlords help against enemy characters (Hypnotic Gaze).
FNP should go on the Gargoyles which should screen the rest of your army, and with PE from the Flyrants Gargoyles can be nasty against soft units. They can also glance most vehicles in the game, on the charge.
Hive Guards grab 4+ cover from Termagants. Tervigon gets 4+ cover from Gargoyles (at least in the first couple of turns, then 5+ from Venomthropes).
With the run move the Venomthropes should provide 5+ cover saves to the flying MC’s for the first couple of turns. Between your huge monster models, Gargoyles and terrain, you should be able to completely block LOS to the Venomthropes from some (most) angles, and make the Gargoyles less interesting to charge (don’t forget you get defensive grenades on the whole unit if a fraction of a base of a single model in the friendly unit is within 6” from a Venomthrope AND you get S4 attacks in following rounds of combat which is great against vehicles that hasn’t moved out of btb contact).
Alternative 2, if you rather have more Gargoyles than Harpies:
Flyrant – Adrenal Glands, Old Adversary, 2xScything Talons, Wings, Leech Essence, Paroxysm
Flyrant – Adrenal Glands, Old Adversary, 2xScything Talons, Wings, Leech Essence, Paroxysm
2 Hive Guards
2 Hive Guards
2 Venomthropes
10 Genestealers
10 Genestealers
10 Termagants
Tervigon –Catalyst, Cluster Spines, Scything Talons
30 Gargoyles – Adrenal Glands, Toxin Sacs
30 Gargoyles – Adrenal Glands, Toxin Sacs
Harpy - Twinlinked Heavy Venom Cannon, Cluster Spines
2000 points
99 models
12 kill points
Personally I’d go with the second list because Gargoyles are awesome, and Harpies are not.
