Hey guys,

A friend of mine's son in this part of the world wants to build Necrons. We're looking to do this half-assed on a budget that a 14 year old can afford piece meal on his allowance (which is pretty decent at $20 a week).

He loves Warriors and Destroyers, so I've put together a list that I hope would be reasonable to play most of the local tournaments (Nothing major hard core competitive here for the most part)

HQ:

Overlord w/ Res Orb

Destroyer Lord w/Res Orb

Royal Court - (3x) Necron Lord w/Res Orb)

Elites:

(5x) Lychguard w/ (3x) Hyperphase swords & Dispersion Shields

Troops:

(19x) Warriors
Ghost Ark

(20x) Warriors
Ghost Ark

(10x) Immortals w/ Tesla Carbines

Fast:

(5x) Destroyers w/(3x) Heavy Upgrades

Comes in right at 1850. Obviously we can lose some Warriors or move their numbers around to fit them in the Transports, or whatever else works. I'm not new to the game but I'm 100% new to the codex.

I would really appreciate some constructive advice.

The biggest flaw I see in the list is that there is besided the Heavy Destroyers, there is zip-zilch-nada in terms of anti-tank. If the kid is planning on playing in tournaments (and possibly even friendly games) every mech list is going to stomp him flat.

The Lychguard all need the same equipment as well. You can't mix and match. It's all Scythes or all Sword+Board.

The destroyer lord really isn't a solid choice. Especially since he really doesn't have anything to do. The destroyers are shoot and the destroyer lord is assaulty so he'd prefer to hang out with wraiths....but that kind of deathstar is asking for trouble. I've never seen it preform well.

If he really likes destroyers, heavies are the most useful (but they are pricey for a 1 wound lascannon). Maybe 3x2 Heavy Destroyers?

heh, then you haven't seen it played well. (in low point games, a unit of 6 Wraiths lead by a Destroyer Lord has regularly served me well).
Though, if he tries this, he'll need to drop the ResOrb and pick up some S.Weave.

Anyway, if the kid is dead set on using Destroyers, I would suggest he look into getting a Triarch Stalker (or two). The twin-linking bonus it grants will take the Destroyer's shooting from not-bad to freakin'-awesome. (also, will add some anti-tank ability to the list. I've run an army that had 1 Heat Ray Stalker, backed up by a unit of 4 Destroyer for anti-infantry, and 1 Heavy Gauss Cannon Stalker, backed up by a unit of 2 Heavy Destroyers for anti-tank... worked wonderfully).

Also, yes, Lychguard can not mix and match wargear in the same unit: it's all or nothing.

For the Warriors, a common tactic has been to stick a Lord/Overlord (preferably a Phaeron) with a ResOrb at the head of one brick of 20, then have two Ghost Arks (with 5 Warriors in each) floating along behind/beside in support. It creates a VERY resilient unit. Add to that a anti-CC buffing Harbinger, and it should give you a bit more protection.

Speaking of Harbingers, I think he should probably have a few. At bare minimum, a Harbinger of Destruction with a Solar Pulse, to grant his army some night fight protection from long range weaponry for a turn.

If you haven't bought any models get the following if you can:

2x Barges.

1 x Triarchs - convert these into Crypteks using the Deathmark heads.

2x Battleforce. Assemble the Arks as Doomsday Arks.

It's a good fairly cheap 2k army.

Buy magnets and dont glue EVERYTHING together. That way, a few units can be different units across multiple games. For example, the ghost ark is turned into the doomsday ark by simply turning the body of the vehicle upside and putting a gun on the bottom...superglue that together and youve cut yourself out of 45 bucks.

... that's not going to be a very good army. Especially not if he's going to be entering a tournament. (Doomsday Arks are rarely a good idea, unless you've also got a couple of Stalkers, too).

Also, don't waste Deathmark heads on Crypteks, you're going to have some perfectly good Praetorian heads to you shouldn't be using. Use those with the Rod of the Covenant arms on some Warrior legs and torsos, and TADA, Crypteks (that way, you'll also be able to make some Sword & Shield Lychguard out of the box, too).

Stalkers would help his list alot, and they look REALLY cool, basimpo is right though, magnets on all vehicles so you can change them if you want to try something new. Ex, a stalker with a magnet on each weapon to keep your opponents guessign on which loadout it has so they cant list-tailor)

Thanks for all the advice and I am sorry for being a derp.

Right now he owns (1) Battleforce that hasn't been assembled other than some Warriors, (1) Necrons Lord, (1) Necron Overlord, and (1) Destroyer.

We haven't bought anything else because I don't know what's good and what's not in the codex. To be completely honest I dont have the time to sit down and study it. I am pretty much at the point of tell me what to buy and we will make it happen.

I know this is kind of Cheesy to say (not doing my own research) but I don't want to lead the kid astray. I will get him whatever he needs to get off the ground so just let me know.

Battleforce box (and the other stuff he's got right now)
+
2x Command Barge boxes
+
2x Wraith boxes
+
1x Lychguard box (for Cryptek making bits, mostly)
=
one hell of a good way to start a Necron army.

I never said it was going to be Tournament good, but be aware, that Doomsday Arks destroy GK - I speak from experience.

Some rough idea on the list you would run with these models? I would really appreciate it.

Best,

Seems like that would definitely be going a horde route. Not my favorite but I guess it works. Though if the kids want destroyers, then just axe the wraith boxes...they honestly aren't needed at all.

I personally wouldn't go with the second battleforce either. One is plenty then just expand from there (immortals or warriors).

HQ
Overlord - Resurrection Orb, Phaeron, Warscythe - 150
Royal Court - x5 Harbingers of Destruction, 1 Solar Pulse - 195

Troops
x20 Warriors - Ghost Arc - 375
x5 Immortals - Carbines - 85
x5 Immortals - Carbines - 85
x5 Immortals - Carbines - 85
x5 Immortals - Carbines - 85

Fast Attack
x1 Heavy Destroyer - 60
x1 Heavy Destroyer - 60
x1 Heavy Destroyer - 60

Heavy Support
Annihilation Barge - 90
Annihilation Barge - 90

Comes out to 1420 points. Do what you want with the rest. Personally, this list lacks the number of vehicles needed to be effective I think, but based on what you have, there isn't too much that needs to be added. Maybe sub one DestrucTek for a Lord to go in the warrior unit? I'm not sure losing the AT would be good, though.
