So, my first KS parcel of undead arrived today

A big rulebook and a mini-rulebook that I could give to my usual opponent - I think we'll give this a go, especially since we've only played one game of WFB 8th and haven't really learned the rules of that yet - this looks much simpler to learn and play, hopefully

Any advice as to starting points values, things to include/leave out of first game etc?

Cheers

1000 points works great for a first game to get used to the rules, use whatever you feel comfortable with using from the start.

After that, the game really starts to shine at the 1500+ level.

There isn't really anything in the game that is so complex that it has to be left out. Magic and shooting are both straightforward... in fact you'll definitely want to take at least one caster in an Undead army since their army gets a lot more interesting once their magic comes into play with the healing/ movement boosts that it brings to the table.

One thing to keep in mind is that the movement phase in particular plays nothing like warhammer. Flank attacks, screening and sacrificial speed-bump tactics are the order of the day when it comes to movement, you'll be constantly trying to set up "damned if they do and damned if they don't" situations on each other to make sure that you can get a flank/ rear charge.

Well. we had a bash - 1000pts of my Men against his Orcs.

We thoroughly enjoyed it - had to spend a bit too much time constantly checking unit stats etc, but that's the kind of thing you'll just remember after a while.

The rules themselves seemed clear and fun, I learned that cannon are great when they hit, but aren't very likely to. I also learned not to let a Giant charge you in the flank - 2d6 x 2 attacks, and he rolled a 12. Ouch

Anyone know of any lists that have been written for Beastmen and/or Skaven? Or is it a case of using Orcs/Goblins respectively for some "counts as" action?

Cheers

Sure, there's a compilation of fan lists here:

Skaven list is quite well-tested, there isn't one for Beastmen, but using the Orc army list for them tends to work great!

Brilliant, thanks for the link!

And yes, I agree that Beastmen will be well represented by the Orcs

Adding up all the undead stuff in my KS package and the stuff yet to come, I will have a handy 1500 points!

Spoke to my usual opponent again, we are all gung-ho to ditch Warhammer and replace it utterly with KoW.

My gaming group is doing the same. We're going to try KoW as soon as my copies of the books come in (should be waiting at my house for me now, I'll find out tomorrow) and if it's as solid as I think it is from my quick glances through the digital copy, Warhammer is gone. 40k has already been replaced in my group by Dust Warfare, and Warpath will probably be added into that too. And my buddies already have thousands of points in Undead, Dark Elves, High Elves, Humans, Orcs, Goblins, Ogres, and Dwarves. Hmmm...Mantic's rulebook states you can use any models with their game...my buddies and I are already set to play their game, just by me buying/kickstarting for the book! Bring it on!! Very excited for this. My friends listed that they wanted a smooth game that was easy to pick up, was based largely on tactics, and was not about bringing "that super character". I'm pretty sure Mantic fits the bill.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.
