Hi, Apologies if this has been covered before - I did try to search the forum, but to no avail.

The Imperial Guard codex lists the Command Squad as able to take a Veteran and upgrade him to either a Standard Bearer or a Medic. Are either or both of those upgrades *only* available to the HQ Command Squad? Or could I take them on a Platoon Command Squad?

I would think from reading the entry that any Command Squad could get those upgrades (the Infantry Platoon entry refers you back to the HQ entry for the Platoon Command Squad). However, every list that I've seen on Dakka has the Standard in the CHQ. Am I missing something obvious?

I would like to Drop Troop my entire HQ, including HQ Command Squad of Plasma death - but I'd like to have a standard or two in my Platoon Command Squads that are not dropping. Is this legal?

Sorry. "Only a Command Squad acting as part of the Command Platoon may have a Standard Bearer." (IG 39)

Pretty damning, eh?

"The last known instance of common sense happened at a GT. A player tried to use the 'common sense' argument vs. Mauleed to justify his turbo-boosted bikes getting a saving throw vs. Psycannons. The player's resulting psychic death scream erased common sense from the minds of 40k players everywhere. " - Ozymandias

There can only be one standard bearer (in the CHQ). There can be a medic in every command squad. This is from the description on pg 39 codex IG. The phrase you're looking for is under the 'Standard Bearer' heading under the 'Character' heading inside the Command Squad options section. That's where it tells us that only the vets in a command squad tied to the command platoon can carry a standard.

Edit: I type slow.

Damn.

So is the consensus on Drop Troops still that you can only Drop entire force allocations? Or can you drop some units from one force allocation (eg the Platoon Command) and deploy the line squads normally? I believe that there was a discussion here that resolved that, RAW, you can't Drop individual units and not others - it's the whole platoon or none of them. However, I don't think anyone actually plays that way.

What is RAW on this; also, how do people *actually* play it?

How about this as a work-around: the FAQ says that Light Infantry can be given to individual squads, which may then deploy differently than the rest of the platoon. So one could give the platoon Drop Troopers, then give all of the line squads (but not the Platoon Command Squad) Light Infantry. Presumably the line squads would then infiltrate, and the Platoon Commands would be able to Drop in on their own.

Legal?

I deep struck units in platoons while deploying other units in the same platoon at a tournament I went to and noone seemed to mind.

Yeah, it seems pretty clear cut by the rules that certain squads can be given 'Drop Troops' or 'Light Infantry' and be deployed seperately. If you had two different squads in the same platoon with the Drop Troops doc they would be rolled for collectively, but placed seperately.

You might be thinking of the RAW discussion about the IG with 'Meat Grinder' missions. It seems like we DO get screwed there. It would appear that an entire platoon must be wiped out or falling back before any of the squads in that platoon can be brought back.

I drop in unit by unit, ie squad by squad, as a squad is a defined unit at the beginning of the rule book. The drop troops doctrine says that units can be given drop troops and the other units deploy normally. This to me is pretty clearly saying that individual units from a single FOC choice can be deployed seperately from the rest of the FOC choice, which would then deploy normally. I do roll one die for the single FOC choice units that are dropping though.

I haven't had anyone second guess that after readint the drop troops rule even though they were aware of this doctrine having different interpretations.

Hmmm...maybe I was thinking of that. I was fairly certain that one of the big rules lawyers noted that while Light Infantry specifically states that you can do that, Drop Troops doesn't. I'll have to check my codex. Whatever...personally, I like being able to drop in the whole HQ (plas-suicide, demo charges, and sentinels) with a single reserves roll. Just means I can't have a standard.

Re Meat Grinder: by theoryhammer, it doesn't seem that hard to wipe out the tail end of your own platoon if you want - just assault anything but Tau with it...
