Hi all,

I'm a long-time warhammer fantasy player who've decided to try my hand at 40k. I wasn't exactly sure which army I would like to play even after a fair amount of brain-wracking.

Then a friend of mine came along and showed me some of his star wars miniatures from wizards of the coast. And being the star wars fan that I am,  I saw those battle drioids and was thinking it would be so cool to use them as an IG army in 40k, using all miniatures from star wars. A quick browse through the star wars miniatures line revealed a surprisingly diverse variety of sculpts to use in a 40k IG army IMO.

While I personally find it exciting and all, I'm not sure how others will react to seeing an entire 40k army made up of star wars miniatures. From what I see, I have the feeling that 40k players are much stricter regarding issues like WYSIWYG and GW-legality compared to fantasy players, where really anything goes. GW players (both fantasy and 40k) also seem to have a discrimating attitude towards pre-painted miniatures from WoTC in general, although I'm going to rebase and repaint them properly anyway.

So what do you guys think? Should I go ahead with this project? Would you mind if your opponent did the same thing?

I would like to state in advance that if you're thinking I'm doing it just for the sake of saving money by buying cheaper star wars minis (like some of the guys I talked to were thinking), I beg to differ. Some of the miniatures I intend to use are of the rare or very rare category, which would cost a heck of a lot more compared to their GW counterparts. Overall the army may be cheaper than if I used GW products, but not by much. Anyway, cost was never the issue, it's my interest in star wars that made me want to do this.

So what are your thoughts about it? Most importantly would you mind playing against such an army, or would you shun it?

Personally i dont mind BUT the only thing that I have notice is eveytime I played against a "count as" is the disorganization most players show (at least the guys i played with/against) as a suggestion use diferent miniatures for diferent troops like the heavy waepons and special weapons soldiers, try to at least gave them somenthing that resemble the weapon youre intended to use so you avoid the surpirse and irritation on your oponent when you start like yes that unit has 5 meltas and 2 power fist and all miniatures look the same ....(just an example but it would be nice to have a unit that can have all those weapons together) As long as you and your opponent know what each miniature is and count as for it is fine by me. (have you consider converting some necrons models into battle droids)

I fully intend to convert or sculpt all the equipment where possible and keep them standardised throughout the army. Like if this big cannon thingy is going to be a lascannon, every lascannon in the army will look the same. If necessary I'll even sculpt fire to represent flamers. The very least I can do is to make it easy to tell what is what.

If being able to differentiate the models/weapons is no longer an issue, would anyone still mind playing against such an army?

I've been SWM myself for some time now, and yes I had that Idea too, but why Droids. we're talkin about IMPERIAL Guard here, aren't we.
but I would also say that you'd have to convert the guys, so that each special and heavy weapon can be recognized.

people have done cadian stormtrooper conversions.

The USS Orinoco was a Federation Danube-class runabout that was in service with Starfleet in the late 24th century, attached to Deep Space 9. It was outfitted with a sensor pod.

Well, I chose droids instead of clones or stormtroopers because they look so different. The idea was to have a 40k army that's totally different from other 40k armies, and what better way than with droids? If I used clones or stormtroopers instead they may just look like regular IG from afar.

And I fully intend to convert them such that every special or heavy weapon trooper and every officer is different from the regular footsloggers.

Ooh, ooh! Show us on Rebelscum which miniatures you will be using. And what about vehicles? Hehe, IG is a good choice for stupid droids. *kick* *beep* boop* *zzaaapp!*

I'm going to use Nute Gunray as Tau Etheral, and when the enemy comes into close combat I can say:"I thougt the battle would take place far away from here. this is to close."

Yup, think the droids and IG are quite similar, tons of low-value, expendable troops that a commander should have no second qualms about throwing at the enemy!

I was thinking...

- regualr battle droids as guardsmen
- super battle droids as hardened vets or HQ retinue/guardsmen
- general grievous as my commander
- bodyguard droids as commissars
- flash speeders as sentinels (wanted to use the AT-ST but it's too big, and the AT-RT costs a bomb really)
- hailfire droids as basilisk (similar artillery function)
- viper droids as chimeras (ok, a little funny to use a walker as a chimera, and it's tall rather than long like a transport should be, but hey, all droids can be folded up and packed away nicely like they did in episode 1!)
- any of the other speeders as rough riders (or battle droid on STAP model, fits with the rest of the army better but a little small though...)
- if I ever get the chance to field a super heavy tank, the AT-AT would be it!

Things I'm having difficulty finding replacements for are the leman russ and heavy weapon squads. I guess I can convert the heavy weapon squads from scratch. But the leman russ is a headache. SWM only has 1 huge model that may be used to represent a tank, the viper droid. It's either I use it as a chimera or I use it as a leman russ. I'm tending to go with chimeras, since chimeras are something that I think every IG army would need, whereas the leman russ is not (I prefer the basilisk anyway...)

Anybody has other ideas, or know of any other toy/miniature ranges that I can use in my IG army?

My Picks:

Commander ? General Grievous

Commissar ? Bodyguard Droid

Guardsman/Veteran/Sergeant ? Battle Droid, distinguished by colour scheme

Kasrkin/Sergeant ? Super Battle Droid, distinguished by colour scheme

Heavy Weapon Team ? Destroyer Droid

Rough Rider ? Battle Droid on STAP

Sentinel ? Dwarf Spider Droid

Basilisk ? Hailfire Droid

Hmmm, the Trade Federation AAT and MTT from The Fandom Menaced would be perfect as Leman Russ and Chimera...but I have no idea where you would find appropriately-sized models. The AMT/ETRL AAT is 30cm long, for example, whilst their Corporate Alliance Snail Droid is about 20cm long. You may have to use slightly-undersized models placed on appropriately-sized bases; there should be suitable snap-together, die-cast or even resin models floating around. Personally, keeping thematic unity is more important than keeping scale; AT-AT indeed!

And now for something completely different:

I'd be quite happy to play against a 40k army made of Star Wars figs, as long as things were properly differentiated (as you've indicated you'll do). I say go for it.

Action Fleet from Micromachines/Galoob/Hasbro/Whoever! The scale is supposedly 20mm which would make the AAT and MTT ~100mm long. And the best bit is they come with moving parts!

Some nutter has made more than a few Star Wars armies with Action Fleet figures.

Below is part of his Droid Army. The Super Battle Droids and Dwarf Spider Droids are from WoTC; the rest are Action Fleet.

Wow, those action fleet tanks are exactly what I need! Only problem is that they are long out of production, and I doubt very much I can get my hands on them. Even ebay only has 1 single tanks available for bidding...

Anyone knows where I can get these action fleet tanks? Are there any online shop or store that I can buy them from? I can't seem to find any using the search engine...

Hmmm. Ebay has no AATs but it does have MTTs: LINK

Most of the Ebay offerings are new-in-box and thus collector's items. You may have more luck placing a want ad; there must be plenty of these toys in servicable condition that parents would love to offload at nominal cost.

Can anyone tell that I like this army concept?

Yup, I can! Thanks for all your ideas and help!

Managed to buy a single MTT on ebay, but gotta get my hands on many more before the army is complete! Will post pics of my army as I'm getting them painted up.

Lost in Space

Maybe its just me but... a droid army would make a nice stand-in for a necron force.

-General Grievous as a necron lord (wheel bike for a destroyer body)
-bodyguard droids as pariahs
-destroyer droids as well... destroyers
-super battle droids as immortals
-battle droids as necrons
-probe droids as tomb spyders
-and finally, the jawas' sand crawler as the monolith

But I can't imagine those frail droids from star wars ever having a mighty T4, 3+ AS and the ability to stand back up after being wounded... And that their puny blasters being able to shred the thickest armor off tanks...

The reason I chose IG was mainly because both are massive armies composed of individually weak-like-flies troops. But the necron idea may be a good one for those on a tight budget (like me!) since there's fewer troops. Although each droid destroyer costs a whooping 25-30usd...
