Going to take a break from my MEq's to work on a 'panzy' list for upcoming events this summer.  Since I don't have much painted yet, I figured coming up with a competitive tourney ready list from the items I have would be a good way to tailor my painting chores.

I'm not looking for the 20-man Seer Council of Doom (in fact, I don't have that many warlocks), but I am looking for something that could work well enough for most situations.

I have available to paint;

2-3 farseers with another 4-5 warlocks.

10-12 Scorpions

10 banshees

10 firedragons

30+ Rangers

40+ Guardians with 3 platforms (variable weapons)

10 Storm guardians

10 Dire Avengers

2 Wave serpents (whatever weapons)

4 Vypers (whatever weapons)

6-8 Swooping Hawks

2 Wraithlords

3 Walkers

5 Dark reapers

Avatar

3 falcons (weapons variable... except the upgraded shuricannon)

Any suggestions?  Thinking probably 1850 list with options to drop for 1750 or 1500.

Seems a little lacking... was probably originally themed Alaitoc, but open to other craftworlds

What kind of tournament? Is comp a factor?

Do you know what kind of armies are popular in your local area? Will you have to contend with Necrons with Monolith, drop-podding Marines, Mechanized Tau, basic IG, less common armies like Witchhunters?

good questions.
Freeform tourney really. Various events will be running at local stores, from individual store promoted tourneys, to RTT stuff, to generic leagues. Not sure what I'll be joining/doing yet (still have to paint!).
Comp, IMO, is not a factor. If there's going to be an issue, I just won't bother.

Local competition...whatever flavor of the month it is. Seriously, there's a small group who like to buy/trade-in armies for the latest craze and then repeat because they found that they "don't work" (i.e. get beaten after a couple of games)
Mostly MEq's. Tau, nids, guard and a few other softer targets are a bit more uncommon, but still present. If necrons are present, they'll most likely have a monolith (mine don't, but I'm in the minority). I haven't paid much attention to the Tau players. I've seen IG and one or two DH armies. But mostly MEq's in various flavors and styles.

A big thing that jumps out at me with your list is that you have no Falcons, which are the one solid gold unit Eldar have right now. What kind of models are the Wave Serpents? Are they Forge World kits, the new(ish) plastic one, home conversions, or what? Where I?m going with this is wondering if they look substantially different from Falcons (which they may if a bunch of stuff has been added to the front end and you?re missing the old turret) or if they?d be easy conversions back into Falcons.

Doh! Good catch, forgot to list the 3 falcons I have... now to edit the original list....

And in case you're still curious, the serpents are the FW kits.

For an 1850 list, I'd think something like:

HQ:
Farseer and 4 Warlocks with Fortune and Witchblades, two Singing Spears. Embolden and Enhance are compulsory, Destructors possibly an option as well depending on points, which would give you the option to either nail a vehicle with the spears or flame a squad when you jump out.

Elites:
6 Banshees including Exarch with Executioner
10 Scorpions including Exarch with Claw, riding in a Wave Serpent with spirit stones and Brightlance.

Troops:
9 Defenders (including crew) with Starcannon
9 Defenders (including crew) with Starcannon
9 Defenders (including crew) with Starcannon (or Scatter Laser if the StCs get monotonous)
9 Storm Guardians plus Warlock. Two options for configuration here- go anti-tank with Haywire, Fusion Guns and Singing Spear, or pure anti-infantry with two flamers, Witchblade, and either Enhance or Destructor. Either mix is decent. Put these guys in a Wave Serpent with spirit stones Starcannon or Brightlance.

Fast Attack:
5 or 6 Swooping Hawks, including Exarch with Web of Skulls and Sustained Attack
Vyper with Starcannon
Vyper with Scatter Laser (or two Shuricannons, that's fun too)

Heavy Support:
Falcon with holofield, spirit stones, choice of Starcannon or Scatter Laser on the side, Shuriken Cannon under
Falcon with holofield, spirit stones, choice of Starcannon or Scatter Laser on the side, Shuriken Cannon under

If you wanted to run a Biel-Tan list you could do that too, with Fire Dragons as a third troop, though you'd be limited to a total max of 3 Guardians and Vyper units.

The Banshees and Farseer retinue would obviously ride in the Falcons and assault when the timing was right. I would try to keep the Wave Serpents out of LOS as much as possible until they delivered their payloads, and keep the Falcons closer to the enemy than the Wave Serpents on any turn that the serpents are visible, so at least the enemy has to take a LD test or shoot at the super-durable Falcons.

If there's no comp, 3 falcons and whatever else will do well. Since you have the core of one of the nastiest army concepts I've seen, I'd try out something like;

Farseer, jetbike, singing spear, runes of witnessing, fortune

10 striking scorpions, powerfist dude, grenades, stealth
2 x 5 fire dragons

2 x 5 storm guardians with 2 flamers, warlock with destructor, waveserpent with TL bright lance

1 x 7 defenders + starcannon platform

3 x super falcons

1 vyper with starcannon
2 vypers with brightlances

Looks pretty solid. I'm not solid on Stealth for the Scorpions. Never have been. They're just too slow, IMO.

I would just feel bad playing with three Falcons unless I knew the local environment made it necessary to compete.

I tend to agree but he's only got 2 serpents, so them's the breaks. I'd rather they walk and get protected by a fortuned jetbike guy than making the poor storm dorks walk.

And agreed doubly on the falcon thing. If you want to win any tourneys around here the 3rd falcon is a necessity though. Our metagame is kind of split between vicious bastards like my club and the poor vehicle-heavy black templar lists we're forced to spank in tournaments, but there're enough of the iron warriors/all crisis/mecha tau/necrons that you've gotta go nasty.

I am a huge, huge fan of the flamer guardians. They're like 75 pts a squad, and can seriously up your lifespan vs. shootie Ig lists and similar swarms.
