Ok im not a ork player and ive just started looking through there codex.

Looking at the battlewagon could you use its transport space to carry a mek with a shock attack gun? along with things like kustom force field, mek tools and the killcannon upgrade this could make a nice weapon platform?

is this a viable idea?

well first of all a big mek can't have both a Shokk attack gun and a kustom force field, you have to pick one.

The battlewagon is a great vehicle. Most people find it most effective with a deffrolla, carrying either 20 shoota boyz, or a mob of burna boyz and meks. It's great to stick a big mek with kustom force field in as well.

It's less common to see shooty variants, but definitely doable. stick a mob of lootas of flash gitz in it, add a killkannon, big gun, etc.

The problem with that is, the Killkannon only has a 24" range. That means more often then not you'll have to move the battlewagon closer to have targets to shoot and then you can't fire the SAG cause you moved.

Kill cannon is a huge waste of points. I forgo KFF almost every game now, but that's due to an abundance of cover in my meta. I like the dakka version with 10 lootas + 1-2 meks, kannon or lobba, and 3 bigshootas. Lootas can take out 1 unit while the BW takes out another. I've had great success with Deff Rolla and Burnas as well.

Wouldn't you be able to shoot the SAG from the vehicle because the unit is embarked on the vehicle, and vehicles have relentless, therefore the unit has relentless? Or did I just make that up in my mind?

No, afraid you made that one up. However if the Big Mek has some Meganob pals to keep him company, the entire unit gains Slow'n'Purposeful, and thus Relentless.

Of course at that point we are now putting a 95pt character in a 120pt unit in a 90pt transport, all to get a pretty duff weapon.

If you are set on fielding a shooty-wagon, see if you can talk your friends into playing with Imperial Armour and grab yourself a Supa Kannon. Its essentially a Killkannon that isn't awful, being S9 and with actual range. Still expensive, but probably more fun to play than equal points of Deffrollas.
