Are they at all useful? Have you any idea how to make them useful?

At 12pts/model (Dark Angels) or even 13 (Ultramarines) they appear to be waste of points. Or am I missing something?

2 attacks, WS3 S4. What else do these guys offer?

==

I am asking this question because I happen to have around ten of such models, and as they are metal, I have really limited options to convert 'em.

i dont always use them, the thing with them is that they are offensivly as good as a full marine in combat against WS 4, but they do worse defensivly, getting hit on 3's and a 4+ save.

i run a squad of 5 to outflank, which gives a stormtalon escorting them a chance to rear hit some good armour.

I will occasionally use these guys as well, to serve as a speed-bump for other units. I often put a small unit of 5 in ruins with my TFC, this serves to hold objectives, and to help screen the TFC. It can also serve to help ward off small infiltrator or assault units. With cammo cloaks and the cover save improvement from the techmarine, they get a 2+ cover save and can be very survivable.

This can also be used to annoy harass enemies. Simply infiltrate them into cover on the enemy side of the board close enough to an objective to be a threat. Then have them go to ground and wait till round 5 or so. Generally you will get two responses: 1) Your enemy ignores them, and you try to bum-rush and contest the objective in the late game or go assault and tie up a backfield unit. 2) Your enemy diverts fire / man power from your main army, thus ensuring that your more important units get the chance to fulfill their purpose instead of getting vaped in round 1.

Its amazing how many times I've had this work.

Hope that helps

Not my favourite type of scouts ,when I use mine i try to try to gain the Line Breaker or grab some foothold in some ruins , Mostly they tend to be ignored if some treat (Drop Pod or Vindicator/Landraider rush) come forward , if they live to see second turn you can strap some meltas/power fist in the Sargent and try to get a tank or some thing OR strap a locator beacon on then and deep strike Terminators .

The Stormtalon that was stated is also very good since you can put some pressure in the opponent very soon in the game.

In most games I run a single squad of 5 scouts. 4 of them I leave with the default Bolt Pistol and Combat Knife, the 5th Scout I give the Heavy Bolter to. Whenever possible I sitck them in cover, and just let loose a volley every round from the HB using the "alternative" fire mode. It's suprisingly effective at harassing an enemy's more robust infantry units and it will demand that they get some attention (taking it away from your more vulnerable or strategically valuable units elsewhere one the table).

Hope that helps

I have also been known to give them a Razorback transport with HB to further demand the other players attention

How are you able to purchase a razorback for scouts?

Once a squad of Marines has disembarked from it, a Razorback or Rhino can do what it pleases. Including but not limited to: shuttling scouts to their untimely death, or just driving nearby to reinforce their position and (as stated above) garner more attention from the enemy

IMO unless you're BA (and even then their effectiveness is debatable), its either sniper rifles or bust for scouts.

I would use them as road block: put in front of a more valuable unit to absorb charges/ give other unit a cover save.
Otherwise the valuable unit gets shot down within seconds.

I'm contemplating 10 of them to go with Azrael in a Land Raider, as a cheap scoring unit that (unlike IG) can go in DA vehicles.
