I was looking at the codex at work and wondering how good would an alpha strike tau work?
In case you're wondering alpha strike is where you fire basically everything at once hoping to obliterate your opponent.

I think it'd be better at smaller point games where 3 sky ray's and pathfinder's work hand and hand.

Any thoughts on an army list or if this would be even worth spending the money?

What are you talking about exactly?

A list with 3 pathfinder units and 3 skyrays that literally expends all its weapons on turn 1?

I would not recommend it, while you fire your 18 missiles on turn 1 (and pay 1000pts for this)

Enemy SM player can easily have 6 dev squads with 24 missiles that fire EACH turn!

What is the point exactly?

The Plasma Gun is a game altering force of unspeakable power

The hope was to start an intelligent debate about taking one of the most useless choices in the list, and basing an army around it.
Maybe get a themed army thing going.

LOL...."an intelligent debate on taking one of the most useless choices in the list".

Might as well converse about how best to use the krootox from the last Tau codex.

Now, while I'm not a fan of the skyray, I don't think it's "one of the mose useless choices in the list". With that being the case, that opens up some room for debate on the subject.

Unfortunately, vsurma pretty much summed it up, I think. In order to get enough firepower to drop an effective alpha-strike, you need to spend way too many points to set the system up. I don't think the seeker-system is point-efficient enough to use large-scale. Add in the fact that the weapons are even less efficient against certain armies (hordes, Av13-14 heavy lists), and you've got a pretty poor list overall.

Such a shame that such a cool looking unit (the skyray) is never going to be played with Hammerheads and the new Sniper Drone teams as the alternative. Oh well.
