Or paint coated with polyurethane, which describes most of mine? This is my Dark Future / Hot Wheels project, of course, but I can see a lot of other uses for temporarily sticking stuff together on a gaming table.

It shouldn't. Unless you have terrible adhesion on the underlying layers and/or an only partially cured topcoat, poster tack doesn't have the pull required to really mess anything up. The off-brand poster tacks I've used thus far do seem to "set" over time, though (still removable, but stuck much more firmly), so keep it short-term if you're particularly worried.
