I am starting into fantasy and I LOVE the lizardmen. The only issue I have is that it seems if the basic color schemes are red with blue scale, blue or green colors. Now, there may be rare others out there....but that is the majority I have seen.

Now, for me - I love the idea of doing a lava themed army - sticking on the warm end of the spectrum for the majority of their bodies. My thoughts on how to achieve this is:

(I will fix the colors when i am home to be exact)
Prime: Basic white - while black will dull the color, I think I more want an army that pops
Base Coat: Khorne Red over the entire model (minus shields, weapons, bone, teeth)
Flesh: Evil Sunz Scarlet dry brush over the higher points on the flesh. I will also do the upper crests (top of the head) with it too
Scales: Troll Slayer Orange dry brushed over the entire scales on the back and over the body. Will also hit the little plate-horns on the head
Scales: Flash Gitz Yellow very lightly dry brushed near the edges of the scale (highest points) and on the tips of the head plate-horns

For the rest of the pieces (weapons, banners, etc) I will figure tending toward mostly standard coloration (metallics, browns, greys, blacks). For most of the monsters (stegadons, manders, etc) they will be more of a flame look from the bottom up. For the shields, I will be using that as unit identifier by making the color different for each one, in the cool spectrum over the scales (the bits will be the same)

Any thoughts, recommendation, etc on maybe a better way to achieve the look? I am still pretty new to the hobby and to painting so I am no master and I am not looking for showcase quality (using BTP's scale - like a 3).

I am also thinking standard lava bases (cork rocky piles, base black, red->orange-> streaks, grey on the rocks). SDO you think that this will make them too 'vivid' or the models and base blend together TOO much?

As always - thanks for your time
