Welll Games Workshop have just announced here in Australia they are implementing environmentally friendly black plastic bags for 25c each. This is great news!

At least they found a positive use for the returned Finecast it seems. Bravo to the smart cookie who pitched that idea at the brainstorm table!

That is ridiculous.

With Aussies earning power the bags should be at least 3 or 4 bucks a pop.

Well said Mr B.

[Warning! obligatory Finecast pun ahead]

Will these be Finecast net bags?

Many of the stores where I shop have a similar offering. Is this really newsworthy? This is not some recent invention and some communities even go so far as to enact ordinances to require or encourage this sort of thing.

It's been this way in the Uk for a short while now.

The small novel sized bags are free, have to pay for any of the larger ones.

Really? I've not beiought anything from a GW store in ages, other than paints, so I've not noticed its introduction.

I despise this modern trend for charging for plastic bags. It's nothing more than profiteering cynically done under the guise of environmentalism.

In my country the plastic bags are taxed now, so every shop stopped giving them free. Some shops even ask more for it, then the actual tax. (before that they just throw the bags at me)

It's a pretty decent counter to the modern trend for everything being in it's own plastic bag. I hate seeing someone who's got plenty of bag space available take another bag they'll just bin when they get home, just because they can. Charging a token figure* for a bag seems perfectly reasonable (no frills supermarkets do it already), though asking people if they actually need a bag would probably have the same sort of effect.

*I've seen bags as low as £0.02 ($0.03US), which is hardly profiteering.

I find it a bit ironic that they use the guise of "environmentally friendly and non-toxic" given they went from pewter to white metal to be "kid safe" then to a toxin riddled resin "finecast" substance.

The local manager told me that head office instructed all stores to immediately dispose of all the old, unfriendly bags and start using the envirobags right away.

Fortunately he saw the utter stupidity in this decree and was working his way through them instead.

It is the law to tax bags in many places In the world.

Also environmentalists have a movement where they contact companies and ask them to charge for bags to help stop the use of them. Basically extending the bag tax to places they haven't got it passed yet.

Many companies have instituted the bag tax nationwide in the US even though the official tax is regional. Lots of customers see this as a good thing.

Everyone is doing it, it is mandatory law in my area, those who are not doing it are facing environmentalist backlash movements in the form of letter writing and boycotts.

This is not news.

Contrary to popular belief...no bag taxes have gone nationwide in the US. They might exist on the coasts...but the rest of the country is largely bag fee free. I have so far only seen them in New York and California (though I here they exist in the Pacific NW as well). Throughout the midwest, south and Rocky Mountain states there have been no bag taxes on any of my wife's shopping excursions.

Add Austin, TX to your list, Sean. I blame all of the people from California.

Yes, and likely other islands like Boulder, CO as well...though those are not the norm, as I would guess down the road in College Station or up away to Waco...they will tripple bag each item in its own bag for you for free without even batting an eye.

Seattle is the only PNW city to have a bag tax afaik. However, I'm pretty sure there are no GW's left in Seattle, so yiu just have to worry about remembering bags at grocery stores or Target.

I'm seeing a trend here... With that in mind, I'm sure Madison, WI is charging as well.

Epic! Also don't forget that GW will most likely start sending C&D letters to all plastic bag makers that sell bags to FLGS and others in the HHHobby

The cashiers at Walmart that put like three items per bag and I walk out with half a dozen when I could have put it all in like two bags easy really annoy me, and we don't have any kind of tax here yet.

They are probably told not to overload bags because they don't want the hassle if it breaks as you pick it up and walk out the store. Plastic bags are pretty flimsily made these days.

Those make good bags for cleaning the litter box, so I don't mind.

1. Are these reusable plastic bags, or just every day bags that we've had for years?

2. If they are reusable at $.25 AUD, I expect they'll only be $.10 USD out here.

3. I live in Orange County, California, and I've never paid for a single disposable plastic bag in my life. Not sure what you are all on about. We give them away like condescension around here.

They're more robust bags. More like something you would get from a brand name clothing store rather than the thin almost see through backs you get a supermarkets.

In summary, they're not much different from what GW gave you before for free.

Pretty much. And yeah, there are no more GWs in the actual Seattle city, so the bag tax is pretty much minimized here at GWs in the outlying area.

But you can advertise your love for GW and the environment™ by reusing these bags in your everyday shopping experiences.

Next up at GW, fold away shoppers, jute and hessian bags. There will be some paper bags as well, but they'll go specialist because no-body wants them...........

figures. I wouldn't care if paper were an alternative, but it's covered under the bag tax, also.

Some companies who do business in 'bag tax' areas have chosen to adopt the 'bag tax' process for all their stores for consistency and to respond to customers explicitly asking for more environmental practices.

Just like smoking bans, Bag taxes are being pushed by environmental lobbies all over the US and getting them passed one local jurisdiction at a time.
