I am currently trawling the net looking for scenarios, campaigns and other cool resources for the game. I have found quite a few cool things -

First and foremost, the official FFG Faqs, free pdf rules and tutorial video.
http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_minisite_sec.asp?eidm=174&esem=4

One of the best X-wing dedicated sites -
http://www.themetalbikini.com

These interactive Cheat Sheets are awesome -
http://home.comcast.net/~jason.fuller/empire.html
http://home.comcast.net/~jason.fuller/rebels.html?scroll=false

Dial stand in card generator
http://home.comcast.net/~jason.fuller/dials.html

You can actually use it to make lists online for free, kinda like army builder.

Then there are various tactics/info/scenario sites -
http://blog.spikeybits.com/search/label/X-wing
http://www.themetalbikini.com/

Boardgame Geek has a pretty active community and the first link is a particularly amazing resource page-
http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/938057/collection-of-user-created-material-for-x-wing-min
http://boardgamegeek.com/thread/864702/scenarios-lets-have-some-suggestions

A cool youtube video about stripping and repainting the models -

*** Warning, after having tried this, I must warn that the Windsor Newtown Brush cleaner will melt the plastic eventually, making it... squishy. It stripped as advertised, but I would advise that you soak a toothbrush to strip them and NOT submerge them at all. When done, immediately wash and clean with soap and water. This may cause some weirdness, as the brush cleaner turns gummy in contact with water. If you find you have residue on the ship, re-apply the brush cleaner and go through the process again, the second go-around should be good. After that ,let the ship dry for a while, I'm talking like a week if you can. This is to ensure any residual chemical reactions have run their course.

And finally some cool 3rd party terrain and templates -

(Reviewed later in the page, some issues but as long as you know what you are getting into, still a recommend for me. GREAT acrylics, asteroids will need touching up though)

(Very clean and polished Acrylics)
http://www.combatwombatminiatures.com/star_fortress.htm
(Great for the price, but somewhat amateurish casts, tons of flash and bubbles, models are simplistic but will do the job with the right paintjob. Again, price is right though, still a good deal)

Suitable Corellian Corvette Model for X-wing scale -
Star Wars Collectors Fleet Blockade runner, proper scale would be just shy of 18", it is 16", at that size, it works just fine and is in and of itself a pretty good model out of the box.
http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p2053587.m570.l1313.TR9.TRC1.Xcollectors+fleet+blockade+runner.TRS0&_nkw=collectors+fleet+blockade+runner&_sacat=0&_from=R40

A great manufacturer for you to create your own custom acrylic designs to high quality -
http://mechanicalwarhorse.com/

Feel free to share if you find cool stuff, and recommendations on the best, most balanced scenarios, and where to get good sized and detailed proxy capital ships like the Blockade runner for example would be cool too!

This is a great little squad builder. Not only does it store the squads you put together but it also gives you the ability to look at other squads people have made and lets you keep a record of wins and losses that a squad has achieved/suffered.

LOL, didn't even realize. You might try writing MM or GF9. I really do think this is a great mat.

I'm a big fan of the "Flight of the Redeemer" scenario from BGG. I modified it and ran it a few weeks ago at the FLGS and it was quite fun. There are a few kinks (like bigger penalties for collisions) that need to be worked out but overall it was a good scenario.

Lol collision penalties could be very interesting, the last game I played was bumpercars lol, I hit another ship almost every turn!

There are a few Death Star scenarios running around including trench runs and rules for turrets, have to dig those up from the BG boards and have a look!

It's not the rocks themselves, but the laser cut, game shape accurate bases and stems I am wanting... without the bases technically asteroids on their own are not suitable for play rules wise.

With aluminum stems and it doesn't look like they are cut to FFG's chits (is that really important?) but pretty cheap:

http://corseceng.com/omni-stand/omni-stand-asteroid-bases/

I have done busy with them before and they ship reasonably fast.

Ya, from reading the rules having the base itself be the proper shape and size with the rock detachable is pretty important rules wise. Since you resolve traversing the dangerous obstacle, collisions/overlap and LOS obstruction via the base shapes only, it is pretty important to have a detachable rock and a copy or close proxie of the original templates to have them be viably playable. If its just a rock on a GW small flying stand for example, that is great looking but useless for actual play. That being said, you could put the flying stand on top of the original card asteroid on the table, which would work great as you would simply remove the entire asteroid and base leaving the card token underneath to resolve play... but it sure wouldn't be as pretty

I think Manchu's point is, do you really care if it matches the six asteroid tokens from the box set? You're probably not using them at a tournament so you can use whatever shape and size of asteroids you want (though perfectly circular bases isn't very fluffy).

Yep, and Coresec offers irregularly shaped bases, just not the same profiles as in the X-Wing starter box.

Corsec ones would work, you want the size variety to make manoeuvres interesting and make some of em tough to avoid... Hammer and Forge emailed me back and they say they will have more of their (imo) sexier asteroids in 2 weeks or so, so I will hold out!

MT, the link above is another great squadron builder that I've used for a while that is a bit easier on the eyes than the one you listed (which I've also used especially for peeking at upgrade cards when I'm away from home).

I found these acrylic movement and range templates online, and although they are a bit pricy, I snapped them up as I like the available colors and more importantly they are the only ones I have seen with the actual faction logos, and not some random company logo on them, so worth the extra cheese if you ask me. They also offer extra acrylic tokens as a bonus if you buy 2 sets -

http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Star-Wars-X-Wing-Miniatures-Game-Custom-Acrylic-Movement-Range-Templates?item=221236414653&cmd=ViewItem&_trksid=p5197.m7&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D3%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D8262032378907104110

I also put some of the inspiration from the hobby sites mentioned in the first post to good use, X-wings are now movie accurate red 1-5, and I just upgraded the paint job on all my ties last night. Next up will be the interceptors re-colored to grey, and the falcon mods -and of course, pips advanced to avenger conversion - If anyone is interested in seeing it, it is in my blog here -

This is pretty basic, but those of you in the US seeking 1st Wave Expansion packs and Slave 1's and Falcons are currently in stock on Amazon. There are still no sign of the elusive Interceptors or A-Wings.

I recall seeing some discussion about limited stocks, but can't find the original thread. If this belongs elsewhere, please move it. Thanks!

he he he, well, at least you have durable perfectly usable templates, won't have to worry about busting up the cardboard!

Asteroids are super cool looking though, I look forward to playing a game with them!

Also just noticed that the Ebay templates would be $40+ for one set with shipping, which is more than I can justify.

True, not cheap... I have been going a bit nuts on this stuff... but unlike 40k there is an end in sight... it's not like there will be 100's of dollars of new stuff to buy every month on the month constantly tempting me so a splurge now seemed a touch better justified.

It's not. But that's what I tell myself.

For example, I didn't need to repaint every damned ship I own either lol -

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/270/432632.page#5742510

I am printing up a giant 92 X 46" board on sealed vinyl, a starfield theme... gonna cost 80 bucks but it should accomodate larger 4-6 player games, and I marked everything off for 3X3 sections and deploment zones too, so it should be versatile.

If it goes well and I play enough, may do a double wide death star one too with trench on one end, but for general games I do like the starfield better. This is what it will look like -

I was just thinking about a two tiered table.

The lower tier could be your starmap of choice, this could be populated with larger models, such as third party Star Destroyers, Larger asteroids whatever.

The top tier would be a raised glass/perspex platform that the regular game is played on.

Battles between the smaller craft are depicted as happening over or around the larger fleet actions. Can't seem to find any Star Destroyer kits that are reasonably priced.. *grumble*

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Also, just found out about a Japanese company called F-Toys; who produce SW ships in 1:144 scale which is what I gather from the internet is the scale of X-Wing.

Only Jedi Starfighters from episodes 2 & 3, plus the naboo starfighter are the only ships they produce other than the ones already covered by FFG. The produce AT-AT, AT-ST and the six legged clone wars one in that scale too...

that is such a great idea for getting the big picture of a battle between two capital ships, which lends itself to all kinds of sub-missions

now I know the collectors fleet has a star destroyer, where can I get a mon calamari?

Hey guys,

This is a copy and paste from my PandM blog, but it contains my reviews for 3 items mentioned above, Willybaby's templates, Corsec Firing Arc Template, Hammer and Forge Asteroids, as well as showing that Collectors Fleet Tantive IV upgraded and painted up -

***

Finally finished it up, besides the acrylic base I am going to make for it to make it playable, but the model itself is done -

Templates ordered off ebay seller Willybaby... I was attracted to the faction logos and available colors. The actual templates though are not the greatest, they look good now but I had to spend several hours sanding and then polishing them, and filling in the paint... the finishing on them as they came was extremely, extremely rough, this is not water or laser cut but grinded it looks like and pretty clumsily unfortunately. The finish even on the flat sides was scuffed and unpolished too. I can't recommend them though I am happy with them after finishing my own work. Would have been nice not to have to invest an afternoon and evening to fix them though.

Along with them though if you notice there are also the CoreSec Fire Arc Templates, which were perfectly tooled. Not really necessary in terms of usefulness but I like a robust collection what can I say -

Then we have Hammer and Forge Asteroids. Unlike the previous the acrylic cut and polish on these was immaculate. Unfortunately the asteroids themselves are rather fragile and a great deal of paint rubbed off them in shipping. If I was not planning on re-painting them myself anyways I would not have been too happy about it. I let H&F know about this and they have taken steps to prevent it happening again. I can recommend these overall though, even if you have to repaint them a bit, they look fantastic on the tabletop!

Then we have Battlefoam. As usual, you can count on the quality and intelligence of the layout, but it is a bit pricey. Overall though it has really helped me keep my considerable collection organized -

And finally for the hell of it, a view of the ole cabinets -

Just checked those out.
I like them except for the H/F logo on he base.

I'm looking to buy some astroid bases for my fighter wrecks, but because of the logos I will buy somewhere else.

Panic...

They are pretty discrete, but yes, completely unnecessary.
The logo on their movement templates is worse, quite visible and crammed in next to the distance numeral, looks sloppy.
Also they rounded the corners on the straight templates but not on the curved templates. Hard edges are probably better for the game but the lack of consistency just detracts from the overall look even more.

The asteroids....are pretty gakky honestly.
As I mentioned before the rocks are half assed chunks of insulation foam sprayed once so they melt a bit and with a hole jabbed in the bottom that is much to big for the "pegs".
The pegs are chopped bits of clear styrene rod, which are too big for the holes drilled in the templates but too small to accommodate a magnet if you go that route.
The templates seem fine, I'm sure I can salvage something useful but I'm overall embarrassed to have made the purchase.

Wow man that sounds very different to my experience! My main issue was paint rub in transit, but the acrylic portions, including all rods flawlessly dry fitting into the holes, were pretty perfect. The asteroid peg holes not surprisingly a bit too big, but I just put a tiny ball of blu-tac on the end of the rods before inserting and they clamp on pretty tight. If you give the rods a twist they don't pop into the bases?

Ps, if you reply please head on over to the resources thread, if we are ever going to get our own forum need to sustain this kind of viable convo in the right threads' also will help to get your review in there too

My bag was full of flaking paint as well. Aside from the rod fit it sounds like we had the same experience, just different expectations, which I guess is why I would say that I'm embarassed to have made the purchase rather than annoyed at the product. Nothing I received contradicts the product description, I was just hoping to have something I could spend a couple of minutes putting together and then be happy using in a game. That's definitely not the case here.
To be fair I now think I'm going to replace the rods and magnetise them to allow for more convenient catastrophic asteroid collisions.

Your blockade runner looks incredible!
I have one coming from e-bay (hopefully) but I am not airbrush equipped so I'm not sure I'll bother doing much to it at this stage.
Hopefully you'll be posting more info about the base you have in mind for it so that I can steal it.
