For those with some experience with the KoW game. In a Kingdoms of Man (Human) army do you prefer longbows, crossbows or Arquebus and why?

I'm basing my KoW Human army on a large lot of medieval Essex miniaitures I'm aquiring. I know I'm going to have quite a few archers and pike/spearmen, but I've also got a bunch of miniatures that could easily be crossbowmen or Arquebusiers.

Each has its pluses and drawbacks.
Bows let you move and shoot so you're more mobile.
They are also cheapest. Drawback is wounding is less.

Crossbows limit you mobility; cost more; but penetrate better.

Arquebuses have best penetrating ability; limit your movement due to reload; and cost the most.

There really is no 'best' troop type among these (I'm sure somebody could math-hammer me wrong). Putting in a mix lets you focus on different threats and maximizes your flexibility.

In general, though, don't waste points on banners and musicians for missile troops. Also, small blocks tend to maximize your ability to move and shoot as one Troop could cover another one while it repositions.

Small blocks work best mainly due to the way that Nerve tests work in KoW.. even 1 point of damage triggers the Ne test.

you do pay proportionally more for small units of missile troops though, so you have to weigh that up against a larger unit that can take a little more punishment.

So it looks like I'll have a bunch of longbowmen.

However the remaining ranged troops could be equipped with Crossbows or Arquebuses. If you had to choose one or the other for a unit, which would it be.

I'm leaning toward Arquebuses as crossbow seem to be the middle of the road, but I'd like to hear other opinions.

I would go with Handgunners/Arquebusiers, so that you have one hard punching unit, just in case.

2+2=5 for sufficiently large values of 2.

That makes sense. If I'm going to have two different ranged units, they should probably be from different ends of the spectrum.

Now I've got to decide to do with the Pavises. Maybe give them to the front rank of longbowmen?

I can't wait until my Basileans show up. Very excited for the elohi, paladins and MaAs. Sisters will get use, and will probably have their arms chopped down. Following this thread for missile ideas.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.
